Has anyone been back to TV Antennae Field down in Bethesda?

shehatesmyhobbies - 14-2-2012 at 01:58 PM

The tires came in for the the power kite club in WW. I am more than likely heading there Fri night and spending the day with the kids from the club Saturday. Don't know what the winds will be yet.

Sunny, 47, low tide around 11AM, winds 10-15 WNW (turning later to S)

Southwest wind is a wierd angle to try to ride on. Might be really fun, but light at best.

Winds on sunday look much better, but very high chance of rain... Gonna sit this one out (already got plans for saturday). Maybe next time...

Yeah, my plans to go over have changed as well. Have to see what next weekend brings.

Anyone ever kite at Piscataway Park, MD?

jollydriver - 24-3-2012 at 09:37 PM

Hi

First, a quick introduction. I've been kiteboarding (water) off and on for 9+ years, but landboarding looks to be a more viable option for me for at least the next year if I want to get out more than once or twice.

I'm new to the DC area, and in addition to West Potomac, Bethesda Antenna Farm, Colmar Park, and the Bowl (in Baltimore) mentioned in this thread, I was wondering if anyone has experience with Piscataway Park, MD? In the attached photo, the red arrow is the parking lot, and you can then follow the boardwalk (red line) to reach the fairly large fields. The trees from the Potomac River side are fairly sparse and not that large. I have walked the field, and it looks like it would work for a landboard.

I did find this reference at http://www.aka.kite.org/resources/favfields

"Piscataway Park Accokeek, MD
•Submitted by: Coleen
•Address: Bryans Point Road
•Directions: Take 210 South. Turn Right onto Bryans Point Road. Follow a few miles until you see park entrance on right. It's not well marked, so keep an eye out.
•Comments: Once you reach the parking area, follow the path, which leads to a boardwalk through a nature area overlooking the Potomac River. The boardwalk leads you to a vary large field, which is perfect for flying.
•Allowed: Single Line Kites,Sport Kites"

Any information about the field is appreciated. Has anyone kited there? Has anyone taken a board or buggy to the field?

Regards

JD

So... I've never ridden that specific field. Though, I do think I was looking at it once on the map. Looks like a fun location to ride. However, it does look like it would require NW to WNW winds. The problem is... we do not get that wind direction all that often. Perhaps this spot will get it more than Baltimore does, but there is a spot in Baltimore that is really fun on that wind direction... It just doesnt happen often enough..

Something to keep in mind. If things line up, maybe I'll make the trip.
;)

Frathouse - 26-3-2012 at 12:09 PM

Hey jollydriver,

No reason to really stop kitesurfing around here. Plenty of nice spots to ride on the Chesapeake bay and potomac. If you want more info the best place to look is on the eastkb forum www.eastkb.com. If your still motivated to landboard Lon aka Chilepin does a lot of riding around DC mainly at haines point. You can hook up with him on the Eastkb forum too.

See you on the water!
Brad

ragden - 26-3-2012 at 12:16 PM

To follow that up.. if you dont mind taking a little drive, I have gotten out on the water far more often living in the DC area, than in my buggy. Of course, I'm a bit of a snob when it comes to wind conditions, and I'd rather drive 3hrs than put up with gusty winds...

Still... if you are so inclined, we might be able to carpool...
;)

Frathouse - 26-3-2012 at 12:20 PM

Chesapeake isn't gusty the water can be choppy or have big rollers (my fav!) but its just as gusty as everywhere else.

ragden - 11-4-2012 at 05:55 AM

Looking like some good possibilities of hitting the water this coming weekend. SouthWest winds all weekend in decent strengths. Anyone interested?
(subject to change as the reports mature over the week)

Tibi - 11-4-2012 at 03:34 PM

Mike ,
Where are you going?
Unfortunately I have other commitments for this weekend. I wonder when is Dewey gonna be warm enough for a spring suit only...

ragden - 12-4-2012 at 04:40 AM

Probably still too cold for spring suits. Especially with the cold nights lately. Hard to call for sure. I was thinking about Pony Island this weekend. Will probably make a final call on Saturday.
:)

done with undergraduate and try some kites ive never flown

shortlineflyer - 28-4-2012 at 02:35 PM

I am finally done with my undergraduate degree, now I am just waiting for the graduation. I will be back home the night of the fifth. hopefully I will get some graduation money so I can maybe buy a new kite. I don't know what I want to get. Are there some people that would let me try out their stuff (I will bring my stuff too)? I don't necessarily want to but your stuff, i just want to see what I like and what I don't. depower is the main thing i want to look at but I like fixed also. I would REALLY like to try a ozone manta and frenzy.

shortlineflyer - 10-5-2012 at 09:06 AM

shortlineflyer - 28-5-2012 at 08:41 AM

I want to try one before i decide to get one

Tibi - 12-7-2012 at 09:52 AM

Weather looks very promising for this Sunday at Dewey beach. SW wind 14-17 mph.

martinipro - 12-7-2012 at 10:09 AM

Tib! the NJ crew has been out quite regularly you should join the fun! We've done Long Beach Island NJ and Sandy Hook NJ.

I saw you have a 15m S3DE is it the one Masu bought? did he give up(I saw he is selling everything)?

shehatesmyhobbies - 12-7-2012 at 10:18 AM

Tibi, I may actually get to join you again this time! Rian as well! Could be a great day!

Tibi - 12-7-2012 at 10:47 AM

Rich, good to hear you'll try to make it. This will be my first time on the water this year. And yes... it's Masu's kite.
Martin, if you haven't been to Dewey, this Sunday looks great. What's your current skill level on the water?

martinipro - 12-7-2012 at 11:05 AM

Still just getting started. Only been in the water 6-8 times I would say.

Just being able to water-start consistently. Cant really ride long before I crash and can't really go upwind yet.

Tibi - 12-7-2012 at 11:20 AM

Then, we are about at the same level.
Who else is usually joining the gang at Sandy Hook? I know about Kober and Jaymz.

martinipro - 12-7-2012 at 11:49 AM

When the winds are high there's quite a few riders(I'd say 20+)

Our crew is usually Kober, Kober's brother, Jaymz, Aaron, Jaro and Myself. The rest are locals.

Tibi - 13-7-2012 at 05:12 AM

The weather prediction for Sunday changed. Winds are still there... but with a 40% chance of thunderstorms for the entire day.

dandre - 16-8-2012 at 12:54 PM

anyone in central md around reisterstown, I have permissions for nice open fields outside of hunt valley .
rolling hillsides so on.

pm me for details

shortlineflyer - 17-8-2012 at 09:21 AM

Anyone want to go atb kiting at ft belvoir with me this weekend
Or go long boarding down the mount Vernon trail.

Either way. I plan on spending as much time as possible.
If I go longboarding I am going to bring my ipod, different wheels(I wanna experiment with different wheels for sliding) slide gloves and a lunch.
There are plenty of places to park along the trail.

Frathouse - 17-8-2012 at 06:09 PM

Hey Dandre,

I live in owings mills but I'm no longer kitebuggying these days. I spend all my time out on the water.

-Brad

shortlineflyer - 25-9-2012 at 09:01 AM

I need to go kiting but I prefer not to kite alone. its not as fun sometimes

martinipro - 5-10-2012 at 11:14 AM

Anyone around this weekend?

I Will be in Baltimore and could hit the Bowl on Saturday. Winds are forecasted 15-25mph NW with a slight chance of rain
Don't know where everybody else rides but may be willing to drive a little for a session on Sat/Sun/Mon.

Will do Land(Buggy or Landboard) as well as water so hit me up via U2U or email if you got something going on!

Hoping Ragden chimes in and joins me for a session! Anyone is welcome. I don't like to go out alone so I'll probably just skip if there is no interest.

shortlineflyer - 26-12-2012 at 03:04 PM

I am going to try to fly as many days in a row starting saturday if any one want to join me for one or several days. there are several fields near me. We are supposed to have good wind on sunday.
My new board wants to be ridden.

shortlineflyer - 27-12-2012 at 09:13 AM
