Power Kite Forum

Just wondering, what's the average age of members of this forum?

Man, I need just a few more folks to chime in!!!!:wee:

C'mon Bob, 24hours in a buggy should be easy. You're sitting down, just stay awake!

Are we talking 24hrs or 24hrs nonstop? I would think finding wind for 24hrs would be the hard part.

pbc - 13-7-2011 at 06:20 PM

What did I miss? What's up with the 24 hour buggy thing? An enduro?

I'm with Feyd, 24 hours of continuous wind would be tricky to find. You'd need a big storm or maybe you just need to live on an island in the trade winds.

Hey PKF,

I'm one of the younger ones here I guess at 25. Felt a lot older this morning after I had some serious back issues. Time to stop sleeping on the futon! lol

lol

They only put young people on the teams cause thats what us old guys want to see on the advertising, Wahine hotties tearing it up and living vicariously through the young dudes setting the bar!

Don`t think of it as if they are marketing to under 20 they are actually marketing to the 30 somethings by showing us pictures of our former selves. I would love to be able to 360 flip to feeble grind on my old Santa Cruz skateboard but alas my attempt at a mere heelflip in my garage last week almost ended in tragedy!

A memorable quote from dazed and confuzed: Wooderson Says: `That's what I love about these high school girls, man. I get older, they stay the same age`

BTW 31 Here!

Sounds about right and is in line with what I see at the beach. The irony is that kite manufacturers still refuse to put 40-ish guys/gals on their teams, they still think 16 year olds are the target market for the sport... WRONG!

rocfighter - 15-7-2011 at 04:35 AM

Just think Adam, Now that your married soon you may become a father. And soon after that the grey will set in and you'll look more your age. Although I have been a father almost 2 decades now and I'm just starting to turn grey:ticking:
Forget it, Your stuck at 14 for a while:frog::lol:

Feyd - 26-10-2011 at 07:40 AM

Update.

Sorry for the delay on this but here are the results.

The average age of all that responded was......48.2 yrs. Youngest was 11. Oldest was 67 (Morrie and Kazedoth)

What does this mean exactly? Obviously the manufacturers, at least those selling here in the states, need to rethink thier marketing? I don't know because I'm not sure this forum is a accurate depiction of the overall power kite market in North America.

I guess my concern is that on the surface this is a pursuit that is facing a limited lifespan. There are almost no kids getting involved? Again, not sure that this is an accurate depiction of the reality of things but I have an idea that kiting is suffering from the same lack of involvement that seems to be consuming the kids today.

Then again maybe young fliers just don't get on the forum?

Perhaps the sport isn't facing a die out. Perhaps the entry age is just a little bit higher than other sports. You get in when you have the $$ to afford it and go from there? Age range late 20's to 90's ?

lamrith - 26-10-2011 at 08:05 AM

May be that the younger set are all kitesurfer types on on sites like kitescoop etc that cater to the younger, more exuberant crowd?

This site very much seems to lean to the buggy/atb crowd which tend toward the older generation..

XdisasterXdrewX - 26-10-2011 at 08:07 AM

18 but 21 on the weekends XD

BeamerBob - 26-10-2011 at 09:28 AM

I'm sure if you lump the kitesurf only crowd in with us, we are but a grain of sand on the beach of kiters. Almost everyone is aware that kitesurfing exists but for the most part almost no one is even aware of what a kite buggy or landboard is. A girl that works with my wife came over a while back and my buggy was on the rack on the car. She asked what it was when I told her, I asked "Did you not know we did this?" She replied she didn't even know it was something anyone did. I imagine she isn't far from the general public's awareness.

SO, I'm sure our average age is a good 20-25 years past the average age of a kitesurfer. Am I off in my analysis?

Houston AirHead - 26-10-2011 at 10:39 AM

25 , 26 this summer.

Telestrat - 26-10-2011 at 10:58 AM

49 years old. Started kite landboarding 2 months ago (former windsurfer). Can't get enough of this kite landboarding sport. It's pretty much all I think about all day.

Wish this sport was around 20 years ago!! Wipeouts and pain didn't bother me as much back then!!

56/2 is 28 the last time I checked. I guess that's what happens when third grade was so long ago. ;)
My average age is 27, unless I'm using your math then its 22.

Bladerunner - 26-10-2011 at 05:38 PM

This forum is very buggy biased. I think your #s make sense for what I see out at buggy focused events .

If you exclude Canuck and myself then I think the ATB crowd at events may average younger.

In general , even in the kitesurf + snowkite arena I am always amazed at the # of OG out there !

In general I think the Novice level kiter is in the majority on land ( in North America ). I'm just not sure that they all realize it ! Nice to see Flysurfer reacting to that group with the Unity. ( Me Want ) .

52 and still no clue !

Your analysis seems right to me. Very few people I meet undertand what kite buggying is. Boarding is not much better. OTOH, most folks have heard of kite surfing.

Kite buggying is just not big in the US. This is rarefied air we're breathing here.

BR when can we say we aren't novices any more? I still get butterflies in my stomach as I pull on site.

BTW 49 here but I like the average method so I'm 24 and a little. Sounds perfect other than I have a 12 and 16 year old.

carltb - 27-10-2011 at 12:46 AM

im 43 next month, but still push it like a 20 year old!!

life begins when you put a kite up!

Feyd - 27-10-2011 at 04:06 AM

I agree that this is forum is definately more of a land based kitesport crowd. I also agree that there are probably a lot more younger riders on the water and in those forums.

But if I were to go with the age of our local water riders the average age would still be in the low/mid 40's. There's a forum called masskiting and from what I've seen there are very few <30 in that crowd.

The sport is very munch in it's infancy still. Like Philip said, nobody knows that buggy or ATB exist compared to kitesurfing.

Snowkiting is even less known.

Tibi - 27-10-2011 at 04:07 AM

42 today... and it feels like I'm still 41.

snowspider - 27-10-2011 at 05:17 AM

I did it again , told somene I'm 57 , my kid turns to me and sais "dad last I knew you're 56". Close enough. My wife during some conversation with the kids about parents and activities told the kids "your dad is not like other parents. He's a freak of nature." She does'nt know I've got 3 new freak flags I'll be flying soon.

doddg - 27-10-2011 at 06:38 AM

Began to buggy and snow kite when I was in my mid 30's, began Kite surfing at mid 40s stopped all of it in my late 40s and now at 54 started up again! Buggied hard last week in Wildwood logging over 12 hours of riding time in two days! I was tired, but no pain! Looking to kite ski this winter, buggy more but will probably stay off the boards......Great to be back!

kiteyakker - 27-10-2011 at 07:32 PM

51......and most days i feel about half that, but lately dealing with knee issues and now looking at my second orthoscopic surgery. NBD, i'll heal up and go hit the snow as hard as ever this winter!!

pongnut - 27-10-2011 at 08:48 PM

Half way between 0 and 100
:roll:_____________:roll:

Seanny - 27-10-2011 at 10:23 PM

I'm 18 now, :D Hoping to log in my first sesh as an adult… *cough* "adult" soon.

Being 18 sucks, it's so overrated. You have to take responsibilities for your actions, or you go to big boy prison. :( I won't do too well in prison.

Luckily that's not an issue for me. I get high on kites.

John Holgate - 27-10-2011 at 11:05 PM

47. The first time I rocked up at the Geelong Kite Club I was expecting a whole bunch of young athletic surfer types.....nope, all seemed 30-50. It still surprises me that there's not more of us.

Holy snikey, what happened here! Now that is downright embarassing. :shocked2::puzzled::shocked2:
I got a feeling I'm in for some tough years ahead (one can only hope it's an anomoly...not a picture of what's to come) Maybe I should start some serious beer drinking: can't get much worse I recon. :wee:

Feyd - 29-10-2011 at 03:58 AM

All I know is I'm below average age. For once I'm one of the young guys.

Of course in the local scene of kiters it's a 50/50 old/young split. I'm on the youger side.

In the mountain bike scene however people think my first bike was one of Leonardo Devinci's prototypes. Thank God I'm a better biker than kiter. But I'm gonna work on that.:wee:

heliboy50 - 29-10-2011 at 08:38 AM

36. Not sure I believe it, but that is what my ID says.

vwbrian - 29-10-2011 at 09:44 AM

39 here Started kiting a few years ago. I think the biggest issue with getting into kiting is the money it takes just to get started and most people can't afford a sport that can cost $1000 just to get started. I know you can get a pansh and some cheap buggy but once you do that your going to want more.

pyro22487 - 30-10-2011 at 01:41 PM

i already posted my age and im not sure its been said yet but i believe the prices of our equipment has to do alot with our age groups. honestly how many 18 to 25 year olds can afford the stuff. very few i would suspect. not saying it cant be done but i know alot of people that are very interested and just turn down the sport for the prices of the kites and the vehicles.

Seanny - 31-10-2011 at 02:50 PM

The only reason I have my gear is because of my hourly job that brings in $120 or so a week during the school year, and I'm not living on my own yet so the only mandatory thing I make payments on is gas. I saved up some money and bought cheap stuff, made my own equipment, and got GRACIOUS help from ye olde PKF :D I know I'll have much much less money when I go out to college… speaking of college, I'm about to start a thread on that...

AJkiter - 16-11-2011 at 08:30 PM

Ok I feel a little weird now... I'm quite a bit younger than all of you. How old do you have to be to be on the forums again? Cuz I'm 16 lol!

Feyd - 17-11-2011 at 06:29 AM

How'd you bypass the parental controls on ur computer?
