shaggs2riches - 21-9-2011 at 05:45 PM

Not the news I was hoping for when I came home from work. May the wind always be with you brother, and your memory carry on. R.I.P.

Does any one have any information that one could use to send out condolences to his family???? I wonder if there could be a donation set up so all of us who wanted to could send something as a group????

mgatc - 21-9-2011 at 06:25 PM

What a fitting tribute. Thank you Treblehook

Thankful for the closure to somewhat soften the loss...

He loved to travel and go on road trips almost as much as he loved kite surfing. We traveled from New Zealand to Italy and Quebec to Mexico, with many places in between. Now it's time for him to go back to having Caddo as his co-pilot. i will miss him terribly.

It's a very difficult time Meg and I know that for you it's an extra hard week, sorry to hear of your fathers passing this week as well.
Love to you,
Mark

I have a special dog collar that will be buried in the sand at SLP within the next day or two.

Anyone riding your buggy\kiteboard between the SLP entrance and the wooden posts marking the pedestrian beach.... dip your kite low halfway as a salute/sign of respect.

Caddo and AJ will fill your sail in return.

I did not know the man, but judging from the outpouring of response on this thread, he was something special. My condolences to his family, friends and PKF amigos

This is so sad. I never met AJ but he was always so positive. His stories were inspiring.

We have lost one of the great ones.

f0rgiv3n - 21-9-2011 at 07:54 PM

I saw the post on facebook via beamerbob... I never got to meet AJ but we chatted a good amount on PKF. I'm glad he was doing what he loved. This really touched me deep, so sorry for the loss.

macboy - 21-9-2011 at 10:17 PM

Wow. Horribly sad. This and all the recent PKF talk about "family".....boy oh boy.

Kinda lost for words but definitely full of prayers for his family and loved ones. Earlier today I couldn't help thinking about this and a favourite movie of mine came to mind. It was the end scene from Big Fish (sorry if I spoil it for those that haven't bit will see it). Guy's dad lived a fearless life because he insisted he had seen a premonition of his death and so knew how he was gonna go. Disease took him and as he was dying he told his son "This isn't how I go" and his son took him to the water and set him free as a big fish. Couldn't help thinking that AJ went how AJ was meant to go. I pray he didn't suffer or struggle and is safe upstairs now....or with the other kiters doing some time in purgatory.

RIP brother. Spot my landings for me?

Feyd - 22-9-2011 at 04:23 AM

Better to go out doing what you love than doing what you don't.

I never met AJ in person, my only interactions with him were through PKF and FB. But in those interactions it was very clear to me that he was a dedicated, knowledgable rider that was as passionate about kiting as anyone I'll ever meet. I would be jealous of his Facebook posts when they would pop up about yet another epic session. He's obviously going to be missed by many. His loss put's a lot in perspective.

My deepest sympathy to his family.

Good bye Charles.

I wonder have they let any one inspect the kite to see if their was a failure

ragden - 22-9-2011 at 06:09 AM

Sad news indeed. Best wishes to his family.

bugymangp - 22-9-2011 at 07:06 AM

this comes as shock to me that hes gone. life is very special to me.
i will miss him alot. i know hes in a better place.
i looking forward to be with him at nabx next year.
RIP my friend. you will be missed around here.

chris - 22-9-2011 at 07:59 AM

Meg nailed it. AJ lived life on his own terms and was living out his dream here on the Outer Banks. It is a huge loss for the kite community. AJ was a great embassador for the sport.

My only solace is that he went out doing what he loved...

I think AJ was the first to show me autozenith of an ARC. It was at the Treasure Island Festival in Clearwater. He would tie off the Phantom 18 and leave if flying like an SLK while we had lunch. He would joke about putting it up in the morning and taking it down at night. funny part was he was serious.

Last saw him over lunch; he was passing through GA on the way to his new gig at Kitty Hawk, with the Kite Cat on top of the car.
We'll all miss you AJ

AJ was needed somewhere else and is helping others right now just like he did while we had him here. you will be missed and remembered my brother.

alasdair macleod - 22-9-2011 at 02:03 PM

Just want to say how sad to hear another kiter has pass away.
To his family & friends hope your sadness pass soon, think back on all the great time you've had with him!

Houston AirHead - 22-9-2011 at 02:51 PM

thinking about you AJ, although we never met in person, you will never be forgotten.

godbless

AJ's brother Bill and his wife Nita came to my fathers wake in Buffalo, NY today. What a class act, especially considering how much they had to deal themselves, and that they live in Texas!

We are still working out the details, but AJ's family and friends will be gathering in the Outer Banks to celebration AJ's life on 22 Oct. i'll post more info here as it becomes available.

i'll get the contact info for AJ's Mom and brother in Texas for those that want to send them condolences and post it here.

As far as a donation or group thing? AJ loved NABX and i know dean is already working on somes way to honor and memorialize AJ.

if others still want to do something i'd recomend setting up a fund so each year an international rider could be sponsored to NABX in AJ's name. i'd be glad to work on that with anyone who's interested.

Bladerunner - 23-9-2011 at 06:54 AM

I think the fund for international attendance is exactly the right idea !

So sorry to hear of even more heartache for you Meg !

BeamerBob - 23-9-2011 at 11:36 AM

Now that I have # boards on my buggy, there will be a commemoration of our friend. Maybe we could come up with a collective idea that could spread and build in numbers.

shehatesmyhobbies - 23-9-2011 at 01:08 PM

That sounds like a good Idea BB!

popeyethewelder - 24-9-2011 at 11:41 AM

Its a sad day when we lose anyone, and even sadder when he was one of our own doing what he love best, being under a wing, RIP AJ, I am sure you will have two of your own now

bigkahuna - 25-9-2011 at 05:42 AM

Here's another article about AJ's accident with photos of what the conditions were like at Cape Point that day:

More Wind Up Top!

mecdave - 25-9-2011 at 07:15 AM

Several years ago I arrived at San Luis Pass to find very little wind. Just as I was setting up the wind meter, AJ rolled by in his buggy and yelled "More wind up top!".

Since it was only blowing 3 or 4mph according to the meter on the ground, I thought how much more could there be up there? So I launched an 11m Razor. Big mistake! It was all I could do to hang onto the handles with my fingertips and every slight ripple in the wind was lifting me off the ground towards that nasty brackish pond 150 yards downwind. I REALLY didn't want to let go and have the foil land in that pond.

Finally I just turned sideways and once the foil did too, I pulled harder on the upwind handle and inched the foil down the edge of the wind window until it touched down and I was able to get a better grasp on the handles. Lesson learned AJ!

Anyway, RIP AJ. May you always find the best wind up top now.

deanaoxo - 27-9-2011 at 05:27 PM

Hey gang,

Marina from The Kiteboarder Magazine is putting some stuff together for a tribute to AJ in the Mag. She's looking for print quality photos of our lost friend. I've found some on the internet...but we are in need of high-res originals.

Specifically, they are looking for some shots from the early days. I told her that AJ was best known for buggying back then and she said that buggy shots are fine.

So, we need to spread this throughout the community and see what we can churn up. Please forward this email on to anyone you know that might have shots of AJ. Please send all pics to me at precisionpoker@gmail.com.

Thanks for your help on this!!
