[edit] don't know how this got repeated. Got repeated. Got...

pokitetrash - 13-4-2015 at 07:32 AM

Gassing up the Kite Fort this week after payday while gas is still under 2 bucks. One year I paid almost 5 bucks a gallon before heading down there but you know what? I'd pay whatever it takes to play at Jekyll. :cool2:

Tide times

Cheeks - 13-4-2015 at 05:31 PM

Just like to know what the tide times are going to be for the week while we're there?

Not sure of where to look for them either. Got a good URL we can access? Local?

Gettin excited!

acampbell - 13-4-2015 at 06:05 PM

Low tides are in the later afternoon during that week and they are big spring tides (with big moons) that should yield wide beaches.

Tides, sunsets and lunar data are listed in the schedule of events on the web site here...
http://www.coastalwindsports.com/JIBE.html#2

To further explore regional tides, I use SaltwaterTides.com. For Jekyll I reference St Simons Sound/ St Simons Light, which is closest on the charts...
http://www.saltwatertides.com/dynamic.dir/georgiasites.html#...

By the time Thursday and Friday roll around, low tides are late such that the beach won't be usable much before 1-2 pm but historically this favors us with sea breezes later in the afternoon.

Looking forward to seeing you!

Michael Gaylan - 13-4-2015 at 06:39 PM

Based on that site May 4th the Low tide 4:09 PM at a height of 0.3 feet
May 5th the low is 4:47 PM and 0.2 high and May 6th Low tide will be at 5:26 PM and 0.3 feet high.

If I am understanding that chart correctly May 5th at 4:47 will have the lowest tide. I think I have interpreted that correctly, but I have a uber noob question..

What and or where do they get the .2 .3 .4 ft high tide info from? Can't be deep...

markite - 13-4-2015 at 07:12 PM

this might help you understand tide tables

http://www.wikihow.com/Read-Tide-Tables

here is info on low tide data:
Find low tide information. Low tide will be expressed as a small number, or possibly a negative number. This number indicates the relationship between the water depth at its lowest ebb and Chart Datum. Because Chart Datum is an average, not the absolute lowest the tide could ever be, sometimes low tide will fall below the average low water mark.[2]
When low tide is expressed as a negative (-), it means the tide will fall below Chart Datum. -1 means the low tide will be one foot below the average low water mark.
The low tide may also be a positive number. The number 1.5 indicates that the lowest tide will be 1.5 feet above Chart Datum.
Remember that outside the United States these units will be in metric.

acampbell - 13-4-2015 at 08:00 PM

I read low tide Monday the 4th at 3:30 pm and 0.0', progressing to low tide Friday the 8th at 6:21 pm at 0.2'. This is for St Simons light just a few miles north and directly on the ocean (just like our beach), close enough within a couple of minutes.

You might have read data for Jekyll Island Marina, which is on the other side of the island in the intracostal waterway. Water has to slosh around the island and is affected by other things like river currents and the like, so the times are different. That's why I reference St Simons since there are no Jekyll beach locations on the charts.

Tides are computed based on known movements of earth, moon and sun. Orbital mechanics and such, so they say. The tide height is referenced by either the mean or average ( I forget) so it is not depth, but variance from average. 0.0' means spot on average and 0.2 means .2' above average. Sometimes during certain astronomical conditions like a perogean spring tide (sun and moon are closer than normal to earth and everything is lined up right), we get "minus tides" where tide is real low and it seems you can walk out on the sand bar half way to Portugal.

All of the actual tide levels can differ from predictions due to forces like storm surge, winds and other factors like shark farts and whoever else decides to run for President that week.

Trained scientists can take me to task with some of these explanations but they are close I think.

Good stuff you all. Thanks.

And thanks to all those shark farts for what they do to our environment.

A low tide of 4 pm, then we could hit the beach at when after high tide?

I needed to scroll down farther on the JIBE forum for your great info Angus. :embarrased:

I usually figure about 3 - 4 hours before and after low tide to provide beach room, but that can be more or less depending on a lot of things like wind, beach drainage and actual tide ranges for that day.

Michael Gaylan - 14-4-2015 at 04:19 AM

Ok thanks... That helped understand the tide level...

See you guys REAL soon ! ! !

yahooooooohoooo~

3shot - 14-4-2015 at 05:33 AM

I'm thinking the later tides might yield better traffic patterns with the new hotels and all. A lot of folks pack it up around 3 or 4 to do the dinner thing after being on the beach all day. I know the last day of JIBE last year was surreal. Everyone buggied up to the edge of dark because of the tides. The sun was fading deep on the horizon. Everything seemed to have a golden glow.
With the tide tables this year, it looks like every day may be that cool!!!

soliver - 14-4-2015 at 05:56 AM

acampbell - 14-4-2015 at 06:18 AM

Yep. And now we know why they call the region "The Golden Isles".

tridude - 14-4-2015 at 12:33 PM

It's all golden I'd da SOFKA........................

Cheeks - 14-4-2015 at 02:01 PM

This could be the best year in a long time that we'll all get some serious unobstructed, long distance seat/board time.
Any long range rain forecast out there yet?

Demoknight - 14-4-2015 at 02:41 PM

I am all for having a bit of a long distance competition for seeing how far north we can go. I am bringing my upwind monsters, so give me your best shot, guys! Looking at the forecasts from last year, I could just about use the 19m Speed3 every day that week. Of course the Charger and Reactors are going to get some love too though. My girlfriend is getting very excited to come, and her family is stoked to stay on the island and see what it is all about. I am really hoping to get her dad to have a seat in the back of a tandem for a few rides around.

3shot - 14-4-2015 at 03:04 PM

Just curious, how the heck ya'll made it through all those huge black mounds (coral looking stuff- like mounds of asphalt) that riddled the beach before reaching driftwood? That stuff stretched all the way down to the waters edge at low tide :puzzled:

acampbell - 14-4-2015 at 05:23 PM

This is a really low tide. The passable portion is in the middle of your photo right next to the sea wall. It's tricky because the beach up there starts turning so gradually north. If you get suckered by a wind with south in it, then it turns in to a downwind that you might not notice until it's too late when you try to come back south. Then you are on a narrow beach slogging north out of a hole. The only encouragement you get are the partiers on their beach decks with drinks in their hands as they cheer you on. But those trees are close too!

markite - 14-4-2015 at 05:53 PM

Jason, just get up a good bit of speed then get her up on two wheels and thread the needle - that's the way we did it:D

speleopower - 14-4-2015 at 06:00 PM

Well looks like I will be there this year with my friend. We plan on coming up Sunday mid day and staying until Tuesday afternoon. Just got a hotel registration and will be getting registered with NAPKA later tonight.

PHREERIDER - 14-4-2015 at 06:15 PM

Michael Gaylan - 14-4-2015 at 06:18 PM

"Partiers with drinks" lol Angus!! Threading the needle is exactly what I was thinking.
@Michael Gaylan, even markite has turned a golden yellow in his avatar. Lol

Man only a couple more weeks to go!!!!!

Looks like I'm gonna have to bring a little extra $$ so I can eat this time. bahahaha

kiteballoon - 17-4-2015 at 12:27 PM

Anyone going to come early or stay late? As usual, work conference is stealing me from being able to attend :-(. Angus, we need a fall event here too so I can make one of these again!

I'm thinking of trying to head up May 2nd and/or 3rd for a quick session. Anyone else going to be around?

pokitetrash - 17-4-2015 at 02:10 PM

I'll be at the campground on Sunday.

pokitetrash - 17-4-2015 at 02:11 PM

I'll be at the campground on Sunday.

markite - 17-4-2015 at 02:15 PM

Ted is down there for two weeks - probably arriving earlier? and Errol arrives saturday 2nd and Jason and I arrive on the 3rd (we'll probably be there early to mid afternoon). Last year Scott and family arrived on either saturday or sunday - they were there for sure sunday.
You'll probably be on your way back from driftwood beach by the time Fiona and I arrive :D
Mark

pokitetrash - 17-4-2015 at 02:39 PM

Sounds like several of us will be there sunday night that's cool! Maybe get an afternoon session in!

soliver - 17-4-2015 at 02:58 PM

I'll be there late (Wednesday to Sunday) then on Saint Simons Isl. the next week. Not so sure I'll be able to get away though... Angus may be available, shoot him an email... I couldn't make the JIBE 2012, but met up with Angus the following Wednesday.

speleopower - 17-4-2015 at 08:18 PM

We will be there Sunday mid afternoon till Tuesday.

kiteballoon - 18-4-2015 at 11:46 AM

Awesome.. Going to work out the details and make it happen. Let's hope for a wonderful evening session!

TEDWESLEY - 19-4-2015 at 05:25 AM

We are coming in on Saturday 5/2 and staying through the 16th. The tides are such that the first week will be the best bet as the second week will be morning tides. Not that a thing like that will keep me off the beach! Think of it as afternoon time to bond with the family....

Demoknight - 19-4-2015 at 09:00 AM

Will anyone else be there the 2nd for me to ride with that afternoon/evening? I would like to fly every day, but I won't be going out most likely unless there is someone there on the beach to ride with :)

soliver - 19-4-2015 at 06:01 PM

Oh, Errol... It'll be ok, I promise.

3shot - 19-4-2015 at 06:15 PM

Demoknight - 20-4-2015 at 07:51 AM

soliver - 20-4-2015 at 04:46 PM

Totally jealous... but good on you, E!

Demoknight - 21-4-2015 at 10:09 AM

It just gives me an extra day to teach my girlfriend how to buggy so she can show off to you guys the rest of the week. :D

speleopower - 24-4-2015 at 08:11 PM

How many people will be at this event? Will the beach be overrun with kitesurfers from the other event?
What about other activities prior to low tide or no wind? We were looking into possible Geocache and horse riding somewhere. Maybe some bicycle rides.
Just looking for alternatives in case there is no wind.
Went for a skate session the other evening but the wind died here in Cocoa Beach. Had to come up with an alternative so we ended up jogging down the beach on our skateboards and taking turns pulling each other. Had fun but it gets tiring quickly. Especially lugging me around.

Demoknight - 25-4-2015 at 06:15 AM

I am bringing my inlines just for the hell of it. If the wind reaches the parking lot, maybe I could try some short line street kiting.

PHREERIDER - 25-4-2015 at 06:24 AM

its a small event , the wounded group , never met , don't know, seemingly small.

small scene in general totally low key. weekdays its practically empty beach

theres a new hotel front and center but doubtful its impact at this point will noticed.

cool spot , kinda got the" whole place to yourself feel"

skate/bike/sup/kayak are good options no rentals that i am aware of, gotta bring your own. quick paddle over to cumberland island, generally very flat, tide sensitive. water is super flat , hi tide rolls up small in a spot, but not much there at all in wave action (unless a NE comes in at hi tide but thats more of winter thing)

nice big beach side side walk for skate fairly long 1/2mile+ maybe longer now and COMPLETELY empty, no techinal bike stuff, but a fair amount of shaded paths.

public golf course , water park if you got kids , manison tours/ sea turtle thing

no wind would surprise me, esp. if its hot.

here s a pic thread with typical scene and action

With four + miles of rideable beach, I doubt it. We will likely have as many or more kiteboarders/ surfers amongst our group.

Jekyll Island and the surrounding Golden Isles Region is first and foremost a family vacation destination. Jekyll Island is a sate park ($6 a day entry or weekly pass for $28) We just happen to have great kiting venues with enough space for everybody and kite friendly local government. The only place we cannot kite is the south end of the island due to it being a protected wildlife area (plovers and such).

The island has miles of beautifully groomed bike and walking trails, and plenty of bike rentals.

There is the historic district with tours and shopping.

There are kayak rentals and tours from the mainland through the vast salt marshes.

There are Dolphin tours too. I don't know why they do this because I think that the dolphins already know their way around.

Horseback riding is on the north end of the island near the campground.

St Simons Island is the next barrier island to the north and offers lots of parks, shopping, fine dining, casual dining, etc.

Hope you can join us with the whole family.

Oh and remind me to tell everybody about the "Alligator 101" lecture on Tuesday mornings at the golf course. Bring your pets and small children!

speleopower - 25-4-2015 at 10:15 AM

Cool. Sounds good on the activites.
I'm just so used to dealing with a huge spring break type drunk festival everyday on the beach here that I'm looking forward to a better beach. Cocoa Beach used to be nice. Now it is just a crazy zoo for spring breaker type drunk kids all year round.

acampbell - 25-4-2015 at 11:13 AM

Ahh, OK, I get it. No, we really don't have that problem.

When I first approached the Jekyll Island Authority (JIA) about the idea of leaving the buggies out overnight and having members camping out in the parking lot to "guard" them, (this is what is now known as the "Kite Fort"), they explained that the little trouble they had encountered is maybe the occasional wedding party that gets out of hand and creates some mischief.

Now we have the Georgia State Patrol fully dialed in with our event and they patrol the parking lots at night and the beaches in the day. In fact, if you see their 4x4 truck on the beach during the day, it is totally cool to buzz them and out-run them with your buggy. They get a kick out of it so long as you don't take out a puppy or toddler in the process. I don't know any other place where you can fool with State Troopers like this without getting busted.

Alcohol is OK on the beach so long as it is not in glass. Only occasionally in the last 9 years here have I run into a drunken knucklehead on the beach complaining about kites. In the few cases in which we have had public complaints about JIBE activities, the JIA has always gotten our back. Mostly they get positive comments about JIBE attendees and how friendly and courteous we are with the curious public members that come to watch us.

Michael Gaylan - 25-4-2015 at 03:41 PM

I am sure this might not speak for everyone...but daaaamnn these are the longest days of the year ! ! !

I know right?

markite - 25-4-2015 at 04:05 PM

One week from today they activate the giant Jekyll Island Magnetron to start attracting buggies from quite a distance over North America. don't try and fight it, resistance is futile.

3shot - 25-4-2015 at 05:20 PM

Angus is spot on here. Jekyll has the distinction of being the most laid back and friendly beach I've been to in the Southeast. Barring an unpatrolled / uncontrolled beach of course. Of all the rules that apply on the beach, they simply expect you to play nice in the sandbox. Do that, and you are free to enjoy yourself no matter what you do. Dogs, kites, weddings, kids, it's all good! As it should be ;-)

I've enjoyed buzzing the patrol before, but my favorite buzzing experience came at St. Augustine actually. pbc and I did a downwind run from the north end where some workers had been doing beach nourishment. They were heading back as we turned to go downwind. We passed them like there weren't moving and reached the other end well in advance of them. The look on there faces was priceless. When they finally caught up, it was all smiles.

speleopower - 26-4-2015 at 02:21 PM

I"m sure it will be fun on a laid back beach really looking forward to a chilled out beach. I've become kind of a mean person on the sand due to all the drunken/drugged up jackasses on the beach here. A few weeks ago evey evening for a week straight when I came home from work I watched someone either puking, pissing or falling down on the sidewalk "downtown". Don't come to Cocoa Beach for a vacation until the city stops encouraging spring break and out of town partiers.

speleopower - 26-4-2015 at 08:23 PM

We are bringing bicycles and regular skateboards to just in case there is low or no wind.

flyguy0101 - 27-4-2015 at 05:10 AM

^^ bikes are great on the island- we go for a ride every morning before the wind arrives^^

Can't wait to see everybody- We will all be ready to play for the week starting with some tight lines on Sunday.
see you soon
Scott

soliver - 27-4-2015 at 05:15 AM

Yea, I'm bringing bikes for my 2 girls that are old enough to ride them, and hopefully one for myself so someone to keep up with them

speleopower - 27-4-2015 at 06:23 AM

I will have a skateboard to tow behind the bicycles.

kiteballoon - 27-4-2015 at 07:49 AM

speleopower, you should come join us in St. Augustine sometime; trip would be about the same distance as me for you. You'll find the beach much nicer for windsports :-)

Demoknight - 27-4-2015 at 10:32 AM

I plan on bringing our bikes as well for the lady and myself. Not sure how much use they will get, but I would hate to want them and not have them, rather than have them and not use them.

markite - 27-4-2015 at 10:52 AM

Fiona rented a bike for a day or two last year - i was less than 10.00 / day.
Would like to bring bikes but i think we are already sitting low on the load I pack in the car.

acampbell - 27-4-2015 at 12:19 PM

Yeah bike rentals are easy here. You can even rent those 4-seat quad-pedal carts (with a surrey on top!) for the family. The island is virtually flat as far as roads and bike trails, so you don't need mult-speeds so much.

So... Forewarning everyone here. If I ride by you, I'm am NOT flicking you the bird!!!! :(

The t-shirts for this year are going to be out freakin standing. "Outlaw buggy pilots from HELL". Shows 3-shot doing in a wiener dog with a left tire and soliver riding through tidal pools wetting down sun worshipers. PHREERIDER doing a 360 above the heads of a school group and Angus at the tent freaking out! ..................................................................

Ahhhh just kidding:D

Doing a version of an old surfer poster thanks to the suggestion of markite. Thanks Mark for heading me in that direction. A large circle of words with JIBE in the center , a foil and a hiked up buggy flying. A dark smokie gray print on a light steel shirt.
I'm pushing the clock so not sure if I'll have time to give you all a preview here before leaving Sunday for JI.

Should have plenty of product, shirts, sticker packs, and coozies. If you have a special request let me know ASAP. I'll even have a few pink shirts for the "kite widows". If you need kid sizes tell me now.

It's going to be a great year to JIBE!!!!!

tridude - 28-4-2015 at 11:28 PM

Cheeks,

Could you print a large shirt in pink? In my 5th yr fighting cancer and a pink JIBE shirt would be awesome. My wife and I are planning to be there Tuesday. Forecast for the aqua on Tues looks great, buggies too........onshore at 14 mph..........:D:D:duh:

Looking forward to meeting you tridude! Didn't know you had cancer. A pink shirt is a great idea! It will be an honor to fly with you!!

Sounds like some cool shirts Davis. We will certainly load up on the JIBE swag again.

Spencer. Its not a break. Its a torn ligament. However, it might as well be. Its called Mallet finger, or Baseball finger. I tripped into the bed of my truck with both arms full of stuff. I tried to put a hand out to catch myself, but jammed my finger. :embarrased:

@Jason- good thing you have 3 others and the all important thumb:D
@cheeks- looking forward to seeing the shirt and picking up 5. if it matters will need 1 lg, 1xl, 1xxl, and 2 mediums ( I think that's the right size for the teenagers)

Davis. We'd like 1-XL, & 2-small of the regular jibe shirts, and 1-XL of the kite widow's shirts for Amanda.

I will also have a full set of tools at JIBE. All standard and metric wrenches and sockets. Pliers, hammer, etc. I always throw them in the burban cause its such a long road trip. Better safe than sorry. Feel free to hit me up for those that have any problems with gear, vehicle, bicycles, etc.

soliver - 29-4-2015 at 03:49 PM

Dittos for me... I always keep a relatively full tool bag in my kitemobile... up for lending if needed.

Cheeks - 29-4-2015 at 04:25 PM

I'll also have tools for community use if needed. And a 12v air compressor. Between the 3 of us, if we can't fix it, it's trash!

Will have a few things for the yard sale. A 21x12x8 new bigfoot tire, several bars, a kite board and a 16m Neish with harness, 12m Cabrina Nitro, and a wheel, cracked. (good for a man cave wall art):bird:

I have all water gear but you wanna lei in the buggy go for it.......kites and boards listed in my quiver are current and will be there minus the SUP unless Molly plans on paddling...........again look forward to next week and flying with y'all.........safe travels to all, see you next week on the Golden Isle............

Excited to see you again Don!... it's been a long while!

You were at the first ever kite gathering I went to... January 2012 OOBE Field Chili Run... I think we've probably only ever crossed paths once or twice since.

Things are shaping up, looking forward to seeing the t-shirt design, you always put together a nice ones Davis - any chance you can fit in a tiny JIBE sticker to fit Jason's finger splint?
I'm definitely in for a few t-shirts again this year, collecting sizes from a few buddies that haven't dropped that winter weight and will let you know.
It'll be a good time seeing everyone, doing some riding and all the other leisure activities and just hanging out.
