Sup kites

Very impressive! I started windfoiling recently, but I'm not good enough yet to try that.

alf - 17-9-2019 at 09:37 AM

not me on the video but i will try the peak 9 with sup and noddles
born star single skin water kite will beat the inflatable wings :P
the peak 9will bring a windsurf to plane from 3 beaufort

having no car i could only foil with inflatable as i sup on river most of the time , i need to paddle, no one tells if foil sup paddling is good

alf - 15-4-2020 at 05:46 AM

Water relaunch for street star. I intend to use a winder for front line only or both
https://www.cdiscount.com/juniors/plein-air/17-6cm-dia-enrou...
Born kite will sell a water single kite named water star

Randy - 15-4-2020 at 06:42 AM

When is water star going to be available? Any more you can tell us?

Windstruck - 15-4-2020 at 12:01 PM

I hadn't heard the name WaterStar before seeing it in Alf's post but had heard the name AquaStar and HydroStar batted around a bit. I know Steffen has been testing prototypes but I've not heard any specifics related to design or timeline. I look forward to learning more!

No pump wing

A sup you can store between your feets while riding a longskate. ( i already do it with a much Bigger sup )
With tent in backpack, sup skate trecks is doable

I've had an Aztron Meteor for a bit over a year. Fun, fast board. Waiting to get it out with the WASP once the water warms up.

Randy - 8-5-2020 at 05:13 PM

Kitewing and inflato SUP.

I'm guessing this is NOT the WaterStar...But, works as long as it stays dry.

Nope, most certainly not the fabled HydroStar! That's the venerable 14.0m RS+, on order by yours truly. I plan to go up to Fall SOBB in September on the OR coast and it could be an ideal Session Saver on a light wind day. I had a great session last time I was there with my 11.0m RS+ but was a tad underpowered.

I wouldn't want to put this kite in the brink.

alf - 25-5-2020 at 04:50 AM

Something good for non foil sups

https://youtu.be/yMCsCUemQAc

I think it s possible with appropriate shape to hav a RAM air wingsurfer
WOuld hav a very wide profile

Randy - 25-5-2020 at 08:31 AM

That's great. I've been thinking of trying that.:thumbup:

alf - 25-5-2020 at 09:07 AM

Big windrange. I guess you can kite on a non foil sup from 2 beaufort and wing till 6

Randy - 3-6-2020 at 10:09 AM

More WingSup and Windfoil. Ideally Wingfoil is next, but may need a better rider for that.
:)

Nice vid Randy!

My wife and I are putting some long term plans together that would have us building a house in St. George (Southern Utah) that will becomes our retirement home in a couple of years. We'd be building just a mile or two from Ivins Reservoir that is ideal for this sort of wind cruising. I was just touching base with Steffen Born this week and he continues to make good progress with his WaterStar line. No details as of yet (he's still forming and filing patents) but I'm looking forward to learning more when we can.

Now to ponder what sort of crafts I want to employ to "motor" around on the water. I don't intend to go the route of full blown kite boarding and have been thinking about a SUP so I could paddle on windless days and cruise on windy days.

I'd love to learn about the good options for a cross over craft for these dual purposes. I'm thinking I need deep fins to be able to get upwind or at least not totally loose ground.

Any ideas would be great! :saint:

Randy - 4-6-2020 at 06:33 AM

@Windstruck

There are "crossover" boards between SUP and Windsurfers called "WindSups". Most are made by windsurfing companies. Those would work, but may be overkill for what you want. They are intended for use with a traditional windsurf rig (sail, mast boom, etc) and usually have a long centerboard or centerfin. I've got one myself though it is not the board in the video. There are also boards designed specifically for use with a wing but they are also intended for use with a foil. They are not the kind of thing you would want to use to go paddling on a lake because they are very small. Perhaps by the time you are ready to get going someone will have developed a crossover WingSUP board.

You probably would NOT* need a full fledged Wingsup. The board I used is just a low cost inflatable SUP that I attached a center fin to. Keep in mind that there are far more non-windy days than windy ones so a SUP that does what you want for paddling would probably be your best bet. The wing thing can really be used with most SUP's, though staying upwind does take some more work (but even if you don't manage that you can just paddle back unless it is very windy.)

I noticed there are some SUP business in Salt Lake City - you might visit one or two and perhaps rent a board for a day and see what you like. The wife might even enjoy it.

* Sorry for any confusion. I left that word out originally.

alf - 5-6-2020 at 01:57 AM

with inflatable sup ]i hold the streetstar by the leading edge and throw it in the air with enough wind the kite gets filled before touching water and diving

to alternate paddling and kiting ; water star will be the best; with short lines for me
i like the wingsurfers but dont want to pump and deflate as offen as i launch and store a single skin kite on the roof

a simple way to launch https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RZYPBBg-c0w&feature=emb_...

water star plus azrton nova you can go paddling and sailing with ease by bike with just a small backpack fantastic ! https://www.freeride-attitude.com/sup-paddle-allround-gonfla...

Randy - 5-6-2020 at 11:47 AM

I am anxious to see the WaterStar.

alf - 6-6-2020 at 01:18 AM

we already hav the gin marabout and the concept air firefly but i think water star will be lighter

Randy - 6-6-2020 at 06:34 AM

Perhaps it will build on the Long Star though I wish he would build a water relaunch NPW.

Here are some info about the kites you mentioned.

alf - 6-6-2020 at 07:03 AM

I think the Nasa star can be hold with shortening the 2 bar lines so water launch is not necessary

alf - 17-6-2020 at 08:12 AM

streetstar sup launch:
just enough wind the kite to fly
i felt shorter sup is better for sailing

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yq3h2cJPTj8

Randy - 17-6-2020 at 09:37 AM

I'm really impressed you can launch the Streetstar from the water in such light wind.

alf - 17-6-2020 at 09:59 AM

easy if you avoid tangles

i also paddle to the beach to start again

that s really doable and the streetstar 2 has better lines and i guess less tangles
when the wind is stronger it becomes easier

I hope to do the same soon with the hydrophobe chiacara nasastar

alf - 18-6-2020 at 11:34 PM

4 beaufort yesterday

the fly air premium is heavy and somehow braking but top speed was 20kmh
Upwind by paddling

Ss short line kite is a good optional Motor for sups

it will plane from 4 beaufort
i felt windsurf board is faster than i sup , even in low winds

Looks good!

Recent trip to the Outer Banks, with ISUP and Kite Wing. ISUP+IWING?

:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

You weren't too tired from all that pumping to go out?

That looks fun, but it always seems to me that the perfect wind for the wing is also perfect wind to kitesurf (as witnessed by the guy behind you!). How was upwind with that setup? Seemed like you were able to hold on pretty well.

Is that one of the newer blow ups you can attach a foil to? That would be the thing I'd like to try most. Wing out to swell and ride waves in.

If I have reasonable amount of wind, I don't really get tired holding it up. If the wind is right, it holds my arm up. The problem is if the wind is too light I do get tired holding it up. So you need enough to keep the wing flying though that really isn't that much. That particular day there was certainly enough wind for kiting. The biggest advantage of a wing compared to kites is probably just don't need a launch where you can put long lines up. It goes upwind fine - but I installed a removable center fin on it. I think it would be a lot harder with a usual ISUP.

I can't use this ISUP with a foil, but I already have a windfoil board and my plan has been to learn to foil with the windsurfing rig first and then see if I can make a go of it with the wing. I don't know if a windfoil board will work with a wing, but I think it might. Some people seem to do fine that way though there are lots of wing foil board out there that seem to be more popular. There are even a few boards that are inflatable that can be used with a foil.

Randy - 11-7-2020 at 08:10 AM

Here is a picture of my SUP center fin. I used an Air-7 box with 3M 5200 Rapid Cure Marine Adhesive.

jeffnyc - 11-7-2020 at 07:42 PM

Heh, I meant pumping the board and the wing up... that's the thing folks complain about most here with their LEIs. But good to know pumping against wind doesn't get your arms tired, that was something I had wondered about. Right after I wrote that, I found your windfoil vid, very cool. I see a few folks around here trying it every time I go out. You're doing great on it! Great location, looks like fun there.

Randy - 12-7-2020 at 10:54 AM

Thanks. I usually only pump my SUP up once a season (unless I deflate it for a trip) and leave it inflated. It is way too much work to pump up every time you go out. Pumping up an SUP would probably be the best workout you can get.:D

The wing takes very little time to pump - they don't hold near as much air as an LEI.

alf - 1-8-2020 at 05:54 AM

Hy, i ' ve been sailing the streetstar at sea with a mistral tarifa
With strong winds under harness it works very well but the board Being 65cm wide i fall at jibe and sail back in kayak style
Maybe its possible to water or knee start i ll try again

Easy and light boat

Randy - 1-8-2020 at 06:47 AM

Skinny board like that would be pretty hard to ride with a kite. Post some videos.

alf - 27-8-2020 at 05:35 AM

alf - 6-9-2020 at 02:03 AM

I was able to beach start and sail
But i falled at jibe and Came back sailing in kayak style
Now i hav a stx 250 supposed to plane and float. We will see

alf - 6-9-2020 at 06:36 AM

This kite is really nice. For me hard top shine with such low performance but suk is great for all

Randy - 4-12-2020 at 09:25 AM

Hey alf - another idea. The key point is to connect the front lines to the harness. Probably be a good idea to have a quick release.

Much Better than streetstar on a sup
But i havnt succed with standing launch

https://youtu.be/Q-UTb9hM7-A

Randy - 9-9-2022 at 02:01 PM

It is hard to launch standing up. I always had to got on the board on my knees and then stand up once I got going. It is best to start at the back of the board. At about 38 second you can see when I stand up. It is not easy no matter how you do it.

The winder did make it possible to launch the kite on a small beach, but it was only 2 lines. Sometimes lines did not unwind equally - one line longer than the other. Have to be really careful unwinding and rewinding. Usually a regular bar was better.

The new Peak kites looks really great.
