I will try and see if anyone has photos of how I do the bridle lines on the net.

thankyou susan :)

kitemaker4 - 7-12-2009 at 12:33 PM

Check out Tom White kiteman site. He has loads of info.

You have to remember I have been making nasa wings for over 5 years now and have spent many hours researching and improving the way I sew nasa wings. Now it is time for you to do the homework.

kitemaker4 - 17-12-2009 at 04:52 PM

Here is a picture of the latest nasa wing I am working on. It is a npw9 4.8 meter kite.

Susan (npw goddess)

bigkid - 17-12-2009 at 07:04 PM

I got all 3 of my new nasa wings from Susan and I have to wait for the rain to stop and then for the wind to start. So Thank you Susan for the great quiver of nasa wings that are quietly sitting in the truck waiting for a chance to get out and fly, they look awesome.

kitemaker4 - 17-12-2009 at 08:07 PM

I hope that you enjoy them.

I got out yesterday for an hour or so and in 2 to 3mph wind the 2m would stay up for a second or to then collapse, the 5m would stay up with a little work, and the 8m was to much for static flying. Wish I had the buggy with me, would have canceled the rest of the day to play. I think I found an awesome low wind kite, have to think hard........12m or 14m next:puzzled:
Great kites, thanks Susan you are the npw goddess.

kitemaker4 - 31-12-2009 at 07:34 PM

Glad you had a good time bigkid. As you can see in my sig below I have some large nasa wings and they do come in handy when the wind is real low. When you are ready for a larger nasa wing just let me know.

Nice!

bobalooie57 - 23-1-2010 at 08:14 AM

kitemaker4 - I received the 7M on this morning's mail. I just have opened the box and unrolled the kite, haven't room in here to totally lay it out, and it's only 7deg. F outside, so I'll wait 'til later for that, but from what I've seen so far it is beautiful. You are truly the npw goddess! Thank you, bobalooie57

edit: nice sack to stuff it in, too, holds handles and all!

kitemaker4 - 31-1-2010 at 05:43 PM

This is what I am working on now. It is a npw9 1.5 meter for high winds.

bobalooie57 - 10-2-2010 at 07:13 AM

General NPW question. Anyone ever flown an NPW on a bar? I'm going to try with my 7M, as soon as there is enough wind, just looking for tips.

bigkid - 10-2-2010 at 07:33 AM

It's hard enough to fly on handles, a bar would be next to impossible.
You have to fly the kite with a little bit of brake to keep the kite inflated, too much brake and the kite looses power, no brake and the front collapses. Let us know how the bar works, might be interesting.

bobalooie57 - 10-2-2010 at 08:09 AM

I got this boxof stuff from powerzone, and included was this de-power(?) bar. I thought to attach the lines as shown, and push bar away, brakes slacken, collapsing kite. Pull in just enough, sweet spot, pull too much, too much brake, kite backs down, think it will work?

002,resize.jpg - 75kB

bigkid - 10-2-2010 at 08:16 AM

Have you tried the kite with handles yet? I wouldn't use a bar to fly the kite, to much input from the bar for the kite. But if you get it to work, let us know how it went, might be a good read

bobalooie57 - 10-2-2010 at 08:23 AM

Yes, I have flown it on handles, it pulls like a train! And I know I can just throw on a strop to hook in, after all, there is no q.r. on that bar either, just wondering about turning speed/ performance wit bar vs. handles, in the interest of science, you know...If I can get video, now that might be funnier!

herc - 10-2-2010 at 08:30 AM

please try it ! i am very curious if a nasawing works on a bar!

kitemaker4 - 10-2-2010 at 08:51 AM

With my many years and hundreds of hours of flying nasa wings I have never flown them on a bar just handles. I would try one out on a bar if I could borrow one just to see how it goes.

Susan (npw goddess)

lad - 10-2-2010 at 09:05 AM

Using a bar with a NASAwing is a cinch...providing you have enough helpful and knowledgable friends! :wee:

bobalooie57 - 10-2-2010 at 09:20 AM

so what do you think the wind speed was in that vid? (25-30?) That was just HQ's 4.8M NPW5! Dragged me around pretty good at 20+! I'd better do my 7M in 5 or 6mph! and have the video rolling!

bigkid - 10-2-2010 at 09:26 AM

what was the guy in the green shorts holding on to at 1:18?:eekdrull:
It seemed to work in the vid, so how do you land the kite?

Looked like a regular 4-line kite surfing bar. Not sure if it even had a safety.

Think he was holding onto a harness, but I'm not sure.

he even seems to be able to hold height - sort of..

bobalooie57 - 10-2-2010 at 09:56 AM

He seems to be flying from 2 lines, there's an option if the d.p. bar doesn't work. He was going pretty good on those shorty skiis!

herc - 10-2-2010 at 09:58 AM

yeah, incredibly good for a nasawing i suppose ! makes me want to have a 10 sqm nasawing for those very low wind days !

u2u'd

bobalooie57 - 12-2-2010 at 04:42 PM

Tried the 7M NPW 9 on a bar today in 5 mph wind. It worked, but I could have used more wind. Here is a link to the video. http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual... There is also video of me flying on handles there.

bigkid - 12-2-2010 at 04:58 PM

I guess if you use a bar, you would have to set it up for the kite to fly at it's best with the bar all the way out and then the brakes would be applied by pulling in the bar. The key would be to set it up with the sweet spot for the kite with the bar all the way out. I will have to give it a shot when the NPW Goddess finishes my 11m and 15m, I can hardly wait, for the kites not the bar:lol:

kitemaker4 - 12-2-2010 at 06:43 PM

Bob the kite looks great against the snow.

Big Kid

I am measuring out the bridle lines on the 15 now.

Susan (npw goddess)

bigkid - 12-2-2010 at 07:00 PM

OK now I have time to think (wow), You would set up the bar so you would let go of the bar to apply the brakes. The sweet spot would be with the bar pulled towards you, right?

Thanks Susan, can't wait to fly the 15, what is the biggest you can make? How about a 25,

kitemaker4 - 12-2-2010 at 08:26 PM

I can make any size kite. Making anything over a 15 meter would be a big project for me. I would have to cut it out at a friends shop. I would think that you could fly a 25 meter in a gnats fart. The biggerst I have ever flown is a 15 meter.

Susan (npw goddess)

jokiter - 13-2-2010 at 08:16 PM

Looks like slippery fun!:D

jokiter - 14-2-2010 at 10:21 AM

That's right. Not too much snow on the ice. The npw worked great since you can easily 'depower' (collapse) the kite if it is pulling too much :spin:

kitemaker4 - 18-2-2010 at 06:25 PM

This is what I have been working on now. It is an all white 3 meter npw9. Here is a picture.

Susan (npw goddess)

bigkid - 18-2-2010 at 06:38 PM

Its the middle of winter, how come the grass is all brown?
The kite looks great even with the brown back ground.

kitemaker4 - 18-2-2010 at 09:17 PM

The grass goes dormant and the top turns brown for the winter. We did have some cold weather this year with the ground freezing. Things are starting to green up already down here. Winter is almost over for us. It is going to get to almost 70 degrees or maybe over by the weekend.

Susan (npw goddess)

kitemaker4 - 21-2-2010 at 08:10 AM

My latest kite. It is a npw9 11 meter. I have the 3 meter below it so you can see how big it is.

bobalooie57 - 23-2-2010 at 06:50 AM

Hey Herc, for what it's worth, I was able to throw my NPW9 7M (made by the goddess) on a kitchen scale, and it weighed 450 grams.

herc - 23-2-2010 at 07:02 AM

bobalooie57, thank you very much! i have added that to this thread: http://www.kiteforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=2360753
your nasawing makes first place :)

bobalooie57 - 26-2-2010 at 08:10 AM

I get the feeling that an even bigger wing would score even better!? Why doesn't everyone fly these? Big Kid, can you throw the 11M on a scale when you get it?

bigkid - 26-2-2010 at 09:03 AM

I will throw the 11 and the 15 on the scale as soon as I get them, well maybe after I take the day off to try them out 1st.:wee:

kitemaker4 - 26-2-2010 at 02:54 PM

I took me a while but I remembered where the gram scale was. My scale says that my npw9 6 meter made by me is 410 grams.

herc - 28-2-2010 at 03:13 AM

susan, as i am interested mostly in light wind kites, it would be very cool if you could weight your 15 sqm npw9 ! thanks alot in advance.

kitemaker4 - 28-2-2010 at 05:11 PM

My gram scale only goes up to 500 grams but I have a bigger scale that measures in pounds. I will try and see how it goes with the 15 meter.

Susan (npw goddess)

kitemaker4 - 4-3-2010 at 12:50 PM

I was able to put the 15 meter on a scale today. It is 2 lbs. 6 ounces.

Susan (npw goddess)

csa_deadon - 4-3-2010 at 03:31 PM

pounds to grams conversion is 1077.3 g

bobalooie57 - 19-3-2010 at 08:49 AM

:D big ups to kitemaker4, I got to fly the 7M NPW that she made for me in my buggy yesterday, I got an effortless park and ride at 15mph in about 7-8 mph of wind! Thanks again for a great engine, I have dubbed her 'Rasta's Fury'!

Glad I could help.

wohoo! seems to fly in no wind! i want a nasawing! waiting for videos showing your 15m nasawing on a board / buggy / ski or even on the water wit a skimboard / SUP .

bigkid - 23-3-2010 at 05:43 AM

The grandsons had no school for the day and after we had ice cream for breakfast we went to the park to play it was a last minute thought. Blaine's board was in the truck but forgot his helmet and so no boarding :embarrased:
Should have some video after NABX.

Awesome looking npw, kitemaker!

I can't wait to get this kite - its going to be my main low wind buggy engine.

-simon- - 14-7-2010 at 04:40 PM

Hey guys, ive been reading through this thread and I am verry impressed with the amount of Nasa`s that kitemaker4 has been making . On a production line eh, well done.
Im over in England and have been flying NPW9`s for the last 8 years. Most of the time ive flown them on a two line bar connected directly to the bridles, flown in two line mode. Mostly on a mountain board.
At present I only have a 5.3m and a 3.4m NPW9, but have had the 7.6m and the 15m and another 5.3m ( was a spare but never got used as you know Nasa`s last forever. )
Keep up the good work,

Si

-simon- - 14-7-2010 at 04:43 PM

Oh, if anyone over here in England wants a 9m NPW5, I know a local guy who wants to get rid for a verry small price.

herc - 15-7-2010 at 12:22 AM

simon, you had a 15 sqm NPW9 ??? impressive ! how did you like it in low winds? was it able to pull you on the board, or was it to difficult to handle ?

-simon- - 15-7-2010 at 09:11 AM

It was great, but had a limited wind range. I got it for low winds and it worked great when other kites couldnt fly, and had a nice steady pull, trucking all over on the board, but as a sidways puller, my thighs got a REAL workout, and as soon as the wind picked up to 10mph, I was going downwind fast, even the board was being dragged sideways, curling the tyres. If I was a bit heavier than 11stone, maybe I could have managed it more. No lines method gave me a bit more wind range with it, but when the kite wanted to go somwhere, you just had to say ok , and go with it.
I bigger , heavier guy with a heavy buggy could manage it.

kitemaker4 - 15-7-2010 at 11:44 AM

Thanks Simon for the kind words.

Susan (npw goddess)

sknnyftn - 23-7-2010 at 09:26 PM

Anyone made a NPW21?

kitemaker4 - 24-7-2010 at 05:01 AM

I have not made anything as big as a 21 meter but it would not be a problem to make.

Susan (npw goddess)

sknnyftn - 24-7-2010 at 07:19 AM

I'm sorry I wasn't very clear, but I was asking about the design (NPW5,NPW9, NPW21,etc.)

herc - 24-7-2010 at 08:39 AM

what was improved from model 9 to model 21 ? is there a webpage?
i didnt know that model 21 exist. just heard about the high ar nasawing.

sknnyftn - 24-7-2010 at 08:51 AM

http://users.telenet.be/claeskites/
This is the only webpage I can find aside from the NASA reports. From what I can tell from the reports, the 21 has 12 fewer bridles, and different angle for the center panel. The reports show an increased lift to drag ratio, but not much. The main reason I was interested is the fewer bridle lines.

kitemaker4 - 24-7-2010 at 11:39 AM

I did not know of the npw21. I do know about the high ar one. I have built several of the h. ar ones and did not like how they flew and went back to the npw9 model. There are two ways of bridling the nasa wings. The classic and the cascade. The cascade uses less bridle lines and that will decrease drag.

Susan ( npw goddess )

bigkid - 24-7-2010 at 04:07 PM

Susan, we talked at NABX about the bigger size NPW9(15m) and making the bridle lines longer. Do you think this is part of the change or difference in the NPW21? Any thought on the change, or did we forget? lol. I know I did.

kitemaker4 - 24-7-2010 at 05:12 PM

I will have to go and study the site and see what they say about the bridle lines for the npw21.

Susan (npw goddess)

kitemaker4 - 29-7-2010 at 05:52 PM

Jeff

From what I can remember talking in the desert was you were asking about making the brake lines longer. Am I correct.

kitemaker4 - 29-7-2010 at 05:57 PM

It took me a while but I found the nasa site that talks about all the models of nasa wings that nasa made years ago. The npw 21 model has the same amount of bridle lines as the npw5 and the center panel is different from the npw5. I could not find out if anyone has made any and used them as a buggy engine.

Susan ( npw goddess)

bigkid - 30-7-2010 at 06:47 AM

Susan, right about the length of the brake lines. Been working with the 15m and added some bridle material to all the lines,(where they connect to the last one at the end), Basically to flatten out the kite, because it resembles a parachute with the shorter bridles. We were able to fly in even less wind with about the same performance.
It's hard to watch and see the difference with out doing it yourself.
Just wondered if the 21 addressed that issue.

kitemaker4 - 30-7-2010 at 10:58 AM

From what I read on the report of the npw 21 they did not talk about longer lines.
