I am willing to meet you out there. Just need to know where to stay and book a room.
-Brad

power - 29-12-2009 at 08:17 AM

Anyone willing to take out an arc today and show me how its done?

ragden - 29-12-2009 at 08:49 AM

Confirming where we are staying this coming weekend. I'll post when I know.
Sorry Power, cant make it out today... Winds look crazy though. I'd watch out for those 45mph gusts...

power - 29-12-2009 at 09:15 AM

How bout a 6m charger? O wait only bladerunner getting one:singing:

ragden - 29-12-2009 at 09:17 AM

Problem with a kite that small is that the general wind speeds were 25-30 with gusts up to 45. In 25-30 you wouldnt have much power with a 6m. Then the gust would hit and you would be fine. After it dies back down to 30, you'll be underpowered pretty badly... :(

power - 29-12-2009 at 09:33 AM

I know, that's why I want a one kite quiver. Well I guess that's not why, but I want a one kite quiver.

Maven454 - 29-12-2009 at 09:38 AM

I want a cookie, guess which one is more likely to happen? :D

ragden - 29-12-2009 at 09:39 AM

There are kites with big ranges, but I dont think you'll ever find a single kite that you can use in ALL conditions you fly in... You'll always need a couple kites...

dtoast - 29-12-2009 at 11:23 AM

cookie or Frenzy's, which one is more likly to happen first?

...wait, manta now. very nice Maven.

Maven454 - 29-12-2009 at 11:32 AM

The cookies will happen first, but the kites should happen very soon. There were issues (okay, more issues) with getting the 11m Frenzy, so it became a 12m Manta :D.

Frathouse - 29-12-2009 at 11:56 AM

Nice Maven that should be fun!!

dtoast - 29-12-2009 at 11:59 AM

I’m sure they are well worth the wait…I can’t wait to see them up either. That’s if I can ever get out again and not have the police intervene. I’m curious to know how the Frenzy does in the gust and how much it luffs. You’ll have to write a review comparing the Manta to the Frenzy.

ragden - 29-12-2009 at 12:46 PM

Before I flipped my lid and grabbed a couple Outlaws, I looked at the Mantas and Frenzies. I couldnt figure out which I would have wanted. It will be neat to see them in the air... :)

dtoast - 29-12-2009 at 01:32 PM

I think you two could post a great write up comparing the Frenzy 7 to the Outlaw 8 and the Manta to the Outlaw 12 being able to fly them side by side. I would love to read that one.

It's tossed for me too...Frenzy, Outlaw, Montana or go closed cell with the Neo II or a flysurfer (flysurfer is probably out of the question due to cost). Not sure how well the PL work in this area with the light and shifty winds...plus the time and effort it takes to fill.

Maven454 - 29-12-2009 at 01:33 PM

Actually, I think the Manta and the Outlaw are pretty close in cost.

dtoast - 29-12-2009 at 01:35 PM

Flysurfer closed cell, such as a Speed 3 12m.

Maven454 - 29-12-2009 at 01:43 PM

That one is definitely more expensive :D.

power - 29-12-2009 at 02:07 PM

So you exchanged the frenzy with a manta? Or you're getting 3 kites?

Maven454 - 29-12-2009 at 02:54 PM

They're sending me a 12m Manta instead of the 11m Frenzy due to "issues". I'm still only getting two kites.

power - 29-12-2009 at 05:24 PM

Can't wait to see how you like them and how they handle in our wonderful inland conditions:smilegrin:

Knolee - 29-12-2009 at 10:14 PM

How well do those flysurfers handle the gusts? I guess this is geared towards ragden since I know he has one but anyone can give some input.

Maven454 - 30-12-2009 at 04:02 AM

I know the Speed is supposed to be not good in gusts, I'm not sure about the rest of the FS lineup.

I've actually used both my Outlaws and the Speed at Anacostia, and in other locations in the DC area. They arent GREAT in the gusts, but perform as well as can be expected. I had good times with them. There was also a day at Wildwood with off-shore winds that were pretty gusty, and I ended up spending quite a bit of time riding with Brians 6m P3, which was a lot of fun.

The catch to it, far as I can tell, 1) managing to hold onto the kite and keep control when the gust hists, and 2) keeping tension on the lines when the lulls hit. The biggest problem I have with gusty conditions is when the lulls hit and when there is a slight direction shift. However, if you can keep tension on the lines when it happens, you'll be fine... :)

power - 30-12-2009 at 09:14 AM

What are conditions like at the bowl and anacostia? Maybe its because there's no water but even as big as the radio tower field is the wind still sucks.

ragden - 30-12-2009 at 09:19 AM

When its blowing NNW at the Bowl, it can be really nice. Winds from that direction tend to be pretty clean actually. The occasional gust, but generally pretty steady. At least, compared to Colmar Manor. I'll put it this way. If winds are NNW, I'd almost rather ride at The Bowl, than in Wildwood. Yes, it can be that much fun.

Anacostia takes the same direction, but tends to be a little gustier. The only reasons I've ridden there instead of the bowl have been either a)nobody else could make the trip to the Bowl, or b) better snow at Anacostia. :) Anacostia isnt horrible, but its definitely a little gusty... The more west in the wind, the gustier it gets...

Knolee - 30-12-2009 at 09:33 AM

Can someone point out the bowl on google maps or something. I'm not familiar with the spot.

power - 30-12-2009 at 09:42 AM

I'm hoping to get there next time we have a NNW wind. I couldn't believe there was a spot that had clean wind in washington.

Todd - 30-12-2009 at 09:45 AM

The bowl is in Baltimore... BRB

The Bowl

Knolee - 30-12-2009 at 03:07 PM

power are you talking about going to Anacostia or the bowl?

Oh snap! I have a good buddy that lives only blocks from there, Im in south central PA but I could stay with him and fly with you guys sometime  or atleast maybe learn a few things

power - 31-12-2009 at 12:26 PM

cmon down

pigryder - 31-12-2009 at 02:18 PM

power can you snowkite there?

power - 31-12-2009 at 02:21 PM

Ya there's a decent field. I'm sure nothing like what there is in PA, but its not bad for DC. Not as much snow either:spin: How's the Dr doing on you're rush III?

pigryder - 31-12-2009 at 02:53 PM

supposed to send me some pics this week, he said he hasnt worked on it much, but Im in no hurry, just a fun kite to fly

power - 3-1-2010 at 12:30 PM

Maven when are your kites getting here?

Maven454 - 3-1-2010 at 12:37 PM

Looks like Thursday.

power - 4-1-2010 at 08:58 PM

Anyone up for some flying tomorow afternoon?

ragden - 5-1-2010 at 06:13 AM

Stuck at work... :(

How was Tug this past weekend?

EDIT: I just read up on the other thread... looks like a good time up there!

Maven454 - 5-1-2010 at 07:55 AM

We're #1 on the list of 25 most replied to topics!!

We obviously need lives (I'd say we need a hobby, but we've definitely got that :D).

power - 5-1-2010 at 09:47 AM

Hey maven you wanna go to the field today?

Maven454 - 5-1-2010 at 10:07 AM

Can't today.

power - 5-1-2010 at 05:39 PM

Anyone for the radio field tomorow?

Knolee - 5-1-2010 at 08:23 PM

:bigok:

power - 5-1-2010 at 08:25 PM

You want to use my twister tomorow I'm leaving right from school?

power - 6-1-2010 at 10:12 AM

Anyone?

ragden - 8-1-2010 at 06:17 AM

Lets try this one more time...
Conditions look epic for the Bowl tomorrow. NNW winds right around 15mph tomorrow. Anyone wanna join me up there? My ONLY concern is snow cover on the field. If it doesnt get warm enough for the snow to melt today, it could be brutal. Does anyone live close enough to do a drive-by today and see if the snow is melting? Worst case scenario, I'll just drive up first thing tomorrow and give it a look...

power - 8-1-2010 at 06:19 AM

Hopefully I'll be there. I think Maven is letting me try out his scorp?

ragden - 8-1-2010 at 06:20 AM

I can give rides to those folks who are "along the way" if necessary... :)

power - 8-1-2010 at 06:20 AM

I'm in!

Maven454 - 8-1-2010 at 06:21 AM

I'd appreciate a ride :D.

ragden - 8-1-2010 at 06:35 AM

Aight, no worries. I'll pack up the car tonight. Question is, will your buggy fit in my trunk along with my buggy and everything else? Guess I can throw the kites in the box, then there will be room for two buggies in the trunk... What time do you wanna head out?

Maven454 - 8-1-2010 at 06:38 AM

No idea if we can fit both buggies in the trunk. If you're driving, we can leave whatever time you want. I tend to wake up early anyway.

Frathouse - 8-1-2010 at 06:42 AM

I might meet you guys tomorrow got a lot of work to get done around the apartment before I fly out sunday for atlanta. what time do you plan on being there?

Todd - 8-1-2010 at 07:01 AM

Even if we can't get some riding in I think it would be a good time to have an ARC launching seminar

What time? Not too early... I need my beauty sleep

supertodd88 - 8-1-2010 at 07:05 AM

I just talked to somebody I work with that lives up in Baltimore and it sounds like they got more snow than around DC. Something like 3 inches... he said he spent 45 minutes shoveling this morning.

Frathouse - 8-1-2010 at 07:34 AM

Snowkiting at the bowl!!!!

lad - 8-1-2010 at 07:55 AM

Dang...the one afternoon I have to be elsewhere :(

That doesnt bode well... 3 inches is not enough for me to pull out my board, yet probably too much for the buggy. That and temperatures are not going to be warm enough to melt it... Bugger. Whatever, lets give it a shot. Worst case scenario, we just go out and fly some arcs, and do some static flying...

Frathouse - 8-1-2010 at 09:30 AM

Since its mostly dry powder I think a lot of it will blow off today. Leaving the field mostly rideable

power - 8-1-2010 at 10:10 AM

Arc launching seminar? Sounds good to me. It seems like that's one of the biggest problems with them until you learn the little tricks.

ragden - 8-1-2010 at 11:37 AM

I'd be curious to see it, not that I really fly arcs at all, just curious.
Of course, if conditions are rideable, i'll probably be too busy putting in miles on my buggy... We'll see... I'll try to be on the field by 1000hrs. All depends on what time I wake up tomorrow...

power & knolee: Do either of you need a ride down to the field?

supertodd88 - 8-1-2010 at 11:38 AM

I just went out landboarding during my lunch break in an inch or so of snow and it didn't seem that bad. I'm still learning and I was going pretty much downwind with no sharp turns but it was actually a pretty good session for me. One of the better ones I've had.

ragden - 8-1-2010 at 11:42 AM

Glad to hear it. Means there is hope for me yet! :)
Are you going to make it to the field tomorrow? This is starting to look pretty crowded. :)

supertodd88 - 8-1-2010 at 01:12 PM

I'd love to go out somewhere tomorrow but I doubt I'll have time to make it all the way up to Baltimore and back.

power - 8-1-2010 at 01:12 PM

Might need a ride, but not sure yet. I'll keep you posted.

dtoast - 8-1-2010 at 02:28 PM

Humm, have not been out since Thanksgiving. :Ange09: I'll try and make it, just have to work in the morning a bit.

power - 8-1-2010 at 02:49 PM

Got a time yet? Be there by ten?

dtoast - 8-1-2010 at 02:56 PM

I'm not sure what time I'll get done and out of here in the morning. Prob will not be up there until around noon.

ragden - 8-1-2010 at 03:04 PM

I'm gonna try to be there before 1000hrs. Cant promise I'll make it. But I'll try... :)

power - 8-1-2010 at 03:12 PM

Ragden I think I'll need a ride there if you're still willing. You need me to U2U my address?

ragden - 8-1-2010 at 03:17 PM

if you dont mind.... :) or you can e-mail it to me. whatever you are more comfortable with...

power - 8-1-2010 at 03:20 PM

Email sent...

Maven454 - 8-1-2010 at 05:09 PM

Though, since I'll be riding with ragden... and I know where you live... :D

power - 8-1-2010 at 06:14 PM

Now don't you come and steal that nemi maven...

@Ragden-Is there any way I could get a ride home as well, only if its not out of the way? Or maybe part way home?

ragden - 8-1-2010 at 06:17 PM

If you are riding with me, I'll make sure you get home in one piece...

power - 9-1-2010 at 07:01 AM

Looks like its a no go today.

Maven454 - 9-1-2010 at 07:14 AM

What?

ragden - 9-1-2010 at 07:19 AM

To basterdize a Mr T quote," I pity the fool that doesn't come today."
or to quote my old 1SG this just became "mandatory fun day".

power - 9-1-2010 at 07:32 AM

Nevermind

bobalooie57 - 9-1-2010 at 08:00 AM

Mandatory fun day:roll: brings back memories! one of my favorite fun day quotes "Ladies and Gentlemen, take my advice, pull down your pants, and slide on the ice." Dr. Sidney Friedman, M.A.S.H. 1077

bobalooie57 - 9-1-2010 at 08:01 AM

BTW if you guys do the launch seminar, Todd should def. take video to share with us un-arcified.

Just got home and what a day it was! I have a metric ton of footage to weed through, some high lites where the Libre Radical that had BIG raves. Maven apparently demonstrated the proper way how to fall, hit his head and then do a power skid on his back 50 or so feet.

Ragden was tearing up the field laying down some solid mileage and speed. Others that showed where DToast, Frathouse along with Lad had a blast riding the Bowl. Lastly Power... wow. Surprisingly very quiet when face to face  This kid can ride and will definitely be the one to watch in the future.

AND THEN THERE WAS _ _ _ _ _ _ ! :ninja: He has Hooj ARC flying skillz and was of great assistance helping everyone throughout the day. Good to see ya man!

Did I cover everything? It was a great day of riding and the conversation at Denys was too funny.

lad - 9-1-2010 at 05:59 PM

It was definitely cold, but a surprisingly good turn out!
That Radical is sweet - hey, maybe after it gets passed around enough, I can get nice demo price on it! :)
"Power" seemed about the size and weight of the left thigh of some of the other guys there ;)- but he could hold those big sails down and had some pretty impressive boarding skills.
The park didn't have the public restrooms mentioned on the directory. So I wound up driving into the Inner Harbor to find a public one! :embarrased: I guess I'll have to wait to make the drive to Denny's next time.

bobalooie57 - 9-1-2010 at 06:23 PM

Great to hear the boys had a turn on the Radical. You gonna send it up here with them? It would be good to have the Radical here for the Tug Hill event to show off! Can't wait for the video of today!edit: just read your u2u Todd, Thanks man, Radical is in good hands! Can't wait!

Frathouse - 9-1-2010 at 06:24 PM

Yeah have to agree that the Libre Radical was massively fun to fly. I can't wait to see some of the footage. Next week Tugg Hill! No more cherry sodas for me definitely popped that:o. I just wish I didn't have to go to Atlanta tomorrow I would love another session at the bowl this weekend.

Maven454 - 9-1-2010 at 06:55 PM

Bobalooie57, the Radical is in ragden's car, ready to be brought to you next weekend. As for my adventures in kiting today, all I can say is "Hurray for helmets!".

bobalooie57 - 9-1-2010 at 06:58 PM

:yes::bouncing::Ange09:

ragden - 9-1-2010 at 07:32 PM

Great fun today. Was nice to see everyone that made it out. Thanks for coming and making this a fun little "mini-event". I can only hope that we can pull a few more sessions like this. My gps showed a total of 20.4 miles covered with a top speed of 28.7 mph. Not too shabby, if I do say so myself.

Was thinking about heading back there tomorrow morning, but I'm not sure my body can take another run like that... Who knows...
Thanks again.. .cant wait to see the footage...

lad - 9-1-2010 at 09:19 PM

it is still a little surreal seeing big kites bobbing around in a dense urban setting!
The speeds would have been much more if there was a bigger field.
There is little that FS Outlaw of yours is not capable of! :karate:
</kite-envy off/>

power - 9-1-2010 at 09:25 PM

Best day kiting ever. I LOVE CLEAN WIND! ... as if you guys haven't heard that enough so far today:lol: Thanks for the comments Todd- can't wait to get out riding again with you guys I had such a blast. Its really nice to see so many guys local that are into the sport.

@Todd- Can't wait till you get that footage together, post it up when its ready!

Knolee - 9-1-2010 at 10:26 PM

F*%k! Can't believe my parents wouldn't let me go. Sounds like I seriously missed out. Glad you guys had fun, and power finally got some clean winds to enjoy. I'll see you guys next time, regardless (sorry mom and dad :singing::thumbup::wee:;):P)

ragden - 10-1-2010 at 11:31 AM

Went back this morning. Someone left a kite stake. I have it with my stuff. Please let me know if you are missing one so I can get it back to you.
Fun little bit this morning.
Distance: 14.7 miles
Elapsed Time: 1:42:16
Avg Speed: 8.6 mph
Max Speed: 28.3 mph

Not the best, but definitely fun. :)

power - 10-1-2010 at 11:54 AM

Another great day today, wind was a bit lacking, but still fun. Good thing ragden was there when I crashed the nemi into a patch of trees:wee:

dtoast - 11-1-2010 at 08:13 AM

Had a great weekend thanks all :bigok: It was nice having clean wind for once and not having the usual inland kite problems. Mentally I wanted to go back Sunday, but my body was saying no. Was your kite ok after being in the trees Power. Thanks Todd for all the video shooting, and he that must not be named, it was a pleasure. Can't wait to do it again.

power - 11-1-2010 at 09:47 AM

Kite's fine, lines went over the trees but the kite landed in the grass. I lucked out on that one.

Knolee - 11-1-2010 at 12:41 PM

Radio tower field tomorrow with power. Be there. Or else...

power - 11-1-2010 at 01:47 PM

I really missed those terrible gusty shifty lully winds over the weekend:no:

Todd - 11-1-2010 at 07:30 PM

:o Wow. I killed my Sony Vegas 9.0

Video is done but when I go to render it I get the big F U and it completely shuts down the program. I have no clue on this one. Off to google to search.

It might be too big

Knolee - 11-1-2010 at 07:34 PM

You mean in a program like Windows Movie Maker? Those programs should be able to handle big long movies. I don't know much about computers so other feel free to chime in, please, but make sure you have enough memory and RAM to operate that program at the same time. With my old POS computer I had to close other programs to run new ones or else it'd freak out or freeze. Try closing all your programs except the one you're using and then finish it.
