What did you do with your kite today?

I found them on Amazon

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07KCS418H/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b...

These will fit a 8mm axle... I had to drill out to 9.5mm to fit the MBS trucks..
After mounting the ski would spin/rotate around, so I added some bungee cord to keep the skis for rotating. Oh, and the spacers are different.

Randy - 7-1-2020 at 07:40 AM

Thanks. Now if I just had some snow......

jeffnyc - 7-1-2020 at 11:40 AM

I got them on ebay:
10"x3" (3.00-4, 260X85) Pneumatic Mobility Tire with Spirit Ribbed Tread (Primo)
But I'm sure you can get them cheaper if you look around. I was face planting a lot at the time so I didn't look around too much and wanted them quick. I think any 10" wheelbarrow tire would work just as well, and less expensive.
My only problem with them was the height it raised the board caused speed wobbles. I just tightened the trucks. Your board looks like it drops, so you shouldn't have that issue.
Not too long after the wheel upgrade I acquired a Flexboardz Haize, and have not touched the granny wheel board since - though as a winter project I'm going to fit the grannies on the Haize and see how that goes.
Your ski board looks fun, though not sure what the advantage of it over a snowboard would be. Pop those skis on a bug! Someone makes boards like that with metal skates for ice - I assume that's where the bungee idea came from? If not, look those up for inspiration. There's a video explaining the bungee I think. I forget what they're called (hey, that's helpful Jeff!).

Jack.Oh - 8-1-2020 at 06:24 AM

Sorry don't mean to hi jack this thread.

Jeff I will hunt around for those grannie wheels... secondly, I have never been on a snow board so can't really compare. Only advantage that comes to mind is no special boots and if you have a mountain board the skis cost $30. Oh and the cool dad factor as you pass 10 year olds sledding down hill.

Randy - 8-1-2020 at 07:02 AM

Ok, I'm a day late. Yesterday rode kite buggy at the fairground. One of the most "wicked" days for wind I can remember. Lots of sudden nasty gusts, sudden holes, direction changes, etc.

Started out NPW 21 underpowered. Went to NS 2 7.0 - overpowered. Next NS 2 5.5, at first was ok but then overpowered. Ended up with my kite in sort of thorny bush. Pulled it out but it was too tangled to use (and I was afraid it was ripped up). So I went to 3.75 NPW 21 - underpowered. Went back to NPW 21 5.0, mostly underpowered.

As it turns out the 5.5 looks ok. I wish the same was true for my thorn poked fingers.

Randy - 8-1-2020 at 03:25 PM

Finished my 8.2 M NPW 21 today. I did take it to the park and fly it a bit in the pathetic amount of wind we had. Saw no problems.

tomdiving - 8-1-2020 at 04:55 PM

randy, you now have a VENTED npw! oddly, i was going to ask about those. today, actually.
using the rev idea, why aren't there vented peaks or npw's? why not just have the same size sail, bridles, and bars, and just change the effectiveness of the sail?
of course, i'm not saying ONLY one size kite, like a 12m nasa made with spaghetti straps to make it equal a 2.5 nasa. but 3 or 4 sizes could likely equal a dozen sizes.
i gotta believe that with the types of materials available today, there something that could be used as the mesh component that could easily handle any loads thrown at it.
just wondering. fire away...
tom

Randy - 8-1-2020 at 05:42 PM

Not sure I fully understand venting, but seems like you would be changing kites to adjust to the wind, and it wouldn't matter if they were vented or not. It would still take the same amount of time to change to a smaller kite or to a larger vented kite. I don't really why a vented NPW wouldn't work though. Riffclown has built lots of mesh Rev type kites and they seem to fly great.

Randy - 9-1-2020 at 01:19 PM

Got a more proper flight in with the 8.2 M NPW 21 this morning. It is big, but seems a lot smaller outside than it did in my house. Spent most of the morning learning to ride by skateboard with the wing. I'll how the video turned out.

The main purpose of the mesh or venting is to reduce force over surface area. Seems counter intuitive to me when it comes to traction kiting. It does have the side effect of slowing down the kite a bit overall so I can see a larger say 4M single skin vented to produce 3M level of pull. It could make controlling the beast a bit easier.. For buggying, little kites absolutely rock in high winds but they are rarely the "relaxing" experience you get with some of the much larger sails in lower winds.. Cruise vs. Sprint, I guess would be the obvious comparison.

Also FWIW, I can't think of a very practical way to vent anything other than a NPW or single skin as an inflatables or foils would introduce a drastic change in wing shape as well.

I also think this would be for fixed bridle since the sheeting action of a depower might lessen the effect of the bars position in and out..

Since you mentioned Meshes, I'll share that I finished my stack today..

Randy - 10-1-2020 at 05:56 PM

Thanks riffclown. Very cool stack of kites. Just curious - do you wear bow ties? Might go good with your kites....:)

riffclown - 10-1-2020 at 06:03 PM

I have worn a bow tie but it has been a while..

I can't really do any real traction kiting any more but I really have been enjoying the flying and making of the stunt/sport side..

stuck in the tree on the first flight?! that sucks!
just kidding. i absolutely love the shimmering light effect of the sun behind that fabric.
keep up the great work!

As usual, I'm a day late - this was yesterday.

jeffnyc - 20-1-2020 at 09:36 PM

You have a great set of contraptions, Randy. You make really great use of that lake!

jeffnyc - 20-1-2020 at 09:41 PM

Got out yesterday for some chilly and gusty practice on the surfboard. Finally nailed toeside, still working on jibes, but will get that down shortly I think.

Randy - 21-1-2020 at 10:32 AM

Nice one Jeff. you have really progressed quickly in this sport!

Pablo - 25-1-2020 at 01:02 PM

Anyone know any good waterproof foils for kitebuggying in a monsoon? It's been over 2 months of no wind, or heavy rain and high tides. I did get one day in with 45 MPH winds and a 1.4m Buster in a field the size of an elementary school soccer field. Man I can't wait until SOBB 2020.

jeffnyc - 25-1-2020 at 07:50 PM

I was going to suggest an LEI, but looks like you are FB only. Maybe worth the investment - they would do much better in the mud there I would imagine. And after that it's only a few more steps to the bay :D

I've been following a guy on YouTube in your area (Angus/SlappySan), and he's been saying the same thing about the wind there. His last 2 sessions have been pretty much victory at sea.

Pablo - 26-1-2020 at 03:00 PM

Success today, steady onshore winds around 15 mph at Garry Point, me and the boy were out for a couple hours today before the winds died down, 12m Access did beautiful for us. Next weekend the wind should be cranking, we have a small depowerable on it's way. Just need to talk to a certain someone about finding me a 18m Chrono for those light wind days.

jeffnyc - 29-1-2020 at 07:57 PM

Trying out some small jumps and just zipping around and having fun on Monday when I should have been working.

Randy - 29-1-2020 at 08:05 PM

Way to go Jeff. Nothing better than blowing off work to catch some wind......:thumbup:

jantie - 30-1-2020 at 08:26 AM

anything is better than working... nice vid Jeff

jeffnyc - 30-1-2020 at 10:24 AM

 Thanks guys! Paying for it now, but well worth it :D

Pablo - 1-2-2020 at 06:34 PM

Braved the knee deep mud and water to drag some gear out to Mud Bay. It's the worst I've ever seen the access path. Once we got out onto the flats, beach was sopping wet, but the wind was good and the sun was shining, Best day we'e had out there in a long while.

I know that somerwhere in Denmark they stack a 100 way back in the days.....

But on Youtubless I found this:

Randy - 4-2-2020 at 05:32 AM

Way to go riff!

jeffnyc - 11-2-2020 at 01:27 PM

A couple days late, but had a fantastic weekend snow kiting Lake Sacandaga. Had the entire lake to ourselves, snow and wind were perfect and picked up all day. Unfortunately it was too cold for my poor old GoPro, so I only got a couple minutes of footage.

jantie - 25-2-2020 at 04:46 AM

Nice Jeffnyc..

jantie - 25-2-2020 at 04:50 AM

What did I do today..?
I fixed my PkdJoy2 after a stormy run last Saturday.
Took the complete bridle from an old one that was completely blown up and put it on this one.
New lines with strength 220/110kg and better handles.
Just got back from a 'dry' test run and it works like it always did..
Really happy that the problem was just that. :D

A compete bridle transplant! Might be a first in power kite medicine.

jantie - 25-2-2020 at 07:11 AM

Hahaha it took only 1,5 hour anesthesia and the donor will always be remembered as a hero that saved another kite

So being a medical guy myself I loved this!!! Had me wondering if the transplant was performed on-pump (outdoors in the wind) or off-pump (indoors)? :D

jantie - 26-2-2020 at 01:12 AM

At home of course in a steriel environment with 2 nurses and an extra surgeon standing by.
Donor was allready on a heart-lung machine so time was of the essence.
recovery went well and he's given the all-clear to fly pulling the crab.

an unexpected beautiful weather and beach today but not enough time
to go trough 40GB of data to copy, paste, cut and edit a full movie.

so just this for now..:D

RedSky - 2-3-2020 at 03:02 AM

you tease

jantie - 4-3-2020 at 11:36 AM

just finished with sorting all the data.
unlocked myself from the basement and released the laptop for normal use so the wife is happy again...:D

over 40GB of movie cut into just over 3 minutes, tried to use as much material but not making it too long or boring.
the rear actioncam picks up moist and the lens gets blurry in no time so not much useable footage from that one.

it was a rainy day untill 2 in the afternoon.
only a short shower at 3 were the wind picked up for a short time and i had to stop for 5 minuntes to prevent an eject.
the seat of the Crab will be modified: the now layed-back position will be more upright so i can brace myself more to go bigger and faster.
speed today was just over 65km/H...
:singing:

enough said, hope you like the result:

You're having way too much fun.
I think a moment of silence at the end of your videos would be appropriate, for those of us who cannot get out as often.

:P

ps: I see that you launch your kite before getting into the buggy. That makes sense. I thought you were launching from the seat. I have been too long an LEI flyer that I forgot how to launch a foil.

jantie - 5-3-2020 at 10:48 AM

Sorry, i'll keep the number of video's down a bit.. :D:D

Launching seated is not a problem. I always launch a kite like in the video the first time out of the bag just to be sure the bridle is correct.

RedSky - 7-3-2020 at 02:39 PM

That neck injury Jantie, wtf!

jantie - 7-3-2020 at 10:14 PM

You mean this?

It was a little boy that was just standing on the beach kiting with
very long lines and I drove by. He looked like he never saw a buggy and completely forgot to keep his kite in the air.
He crashed it in front of me and I dragged him over the beach with his lines around my neck for about 10 meters until I finally stood still. His mom saw it happens and came to apologize but every step she got closer to me she got more pale because she saw the injury upclose and almost fainted. When I got back to the car and looked in the mirror I knew why she nearly passed out, The wound is superficial like a burn injury and no artery were cut but I looks rather ugly and goes around back to my spine.

Fun story: I went to a retail shop the week after to buy new rope for in between the handles and when I got to the cassiere and said: 'I hope this one doesn't break like the other did..' , she looked a bit shocked at the scar on my neck and I could hear her think: ow God, is he going to do again what I think he already tried before...??

When my buddy and I walked to the car we had a big laugh and he said: '..did you see the look on her face..?'

Kited lake Sunapee in sunapee n.h.. great wind, great ice and lots of kites and wing sailors. Well great except it died a few times. Right down to 0. I paced up twice then scrambled when the wind came back. By the end of the day the ice was like corn and we were laying deep troughs on high speed runs.

Might be the last safe weekend on the ice. Some people toured the whole lake. Some did fast reaches. Some sat on lawn chairs and watched.

Windstruck, do you recall the inflated dimensions of the 6 ply trailer tires? Mainly interested in width but possibly also diameter.

Also for anybody, same dimensions of midis?

You know..... I'm asking for a friend...

AlohaBeaches - 7-6-2020 at 10:25 AM

Static flew my new to me flexi Rage 4.7. Even at 300lbs 12mph is too much wind. 😂 Buggy should be fun!

Woo hoo, alohabeaches. Welcome to the forum. I see you are from blaine Washington.

If you are interested in kite buggy bugging consider coming down to the next SOBB buggy event around labor day weekend.

http://www.powerkiteforum.com/forumdisplay.php?fid=31

Also some of the Canadian guys ride up at (Gary point?) In Vancouver. There are some restrictions and possibly insurance. Please talk to locals in the know before you go (Jed,Vlad,Gerald? Are you on the forum?).

Sincerely, Eric

For you friend, here are the exact tires: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00TTFTK26/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b...

The website says these are 17" tall, but inflated on 4x8 Sysmic rims they measure in at around 15.5" tall give or take. Please see photos below. I'd say they are around 4.5" wide, again, give or take. These tire are seriously overspec'd for a buggy and seem to hold up extremely well on the harsh sandpaper like surface of the Ivanpah Playa. The ride is a little more "comfy" running big spongy Bigfoot tires but I for one really like the 6-ply trailer tires on this hard rough surface.

Thank you sir.

I hope to see you again in the future.

Colinw informed me that midis are 15.875 x 5.5" . Thanks to you also brother. Hope to see you for the Canadian holiday this summer.

jantie - 12-6-2020 at 02:57 PM

last thuesday i had a perfect evening session with a run just under 35 MpH but with only 7.5 knots of wind.

in the movie i flew the Libre Vampir 10.5m2 and eventually the Race Pro 11.5m2
someone was shooting pics and filming me.
In exchange for a ride he emailed me the footage for a short impression:

Windstruck - 13-6-2020 at 12:48 PM

Well, it had only been about 14 months or so, so I figured it was time to get out and actually buggy, which is exactly what I did today! I've become too spoiled kiting at Ivanpah and the OR coast and just don't get a big kick anymore from zigging and zagging on soccer fields. However, missing IBX this year hit me hard and I needed some seat time. Things came together with strong winds (maybe too strong) and a free Saturday. One good thing I guess about the darn Pandemic is there aren't any soccer tournaments hogging all the fields.

I started with my 5m RS but needed to switch to my 3m RS+ after about half an hour when it really started to howl. Shaking off 14 months of rust with a 3m 6:1 AR DP racing kite was, err, busy at times. That kite has about a 2 cm turning radius, I'm sure of it. I don't mind that "fiestiness" on the playa (in fact I really like it) but controlling that wasp in janky winds going back and forth sideways on a soccer field was work!

Yay, got some! Finally. :D

Randy - 13-6-2020 at 02:54 PM

Great to hear you got back on your buggy Steve! Keep it rolling!

RedSky - 13-6-2020 at 04:52 PM

Nice one Windstruck
Hope you won't have to wait so long for the next session. The soccer fields might not be IBX but it's better than nothing.

I had a session in the park today too and on Thursday. Like you, my first session this year.
It feels good to contribute something to the forum, even if it's only pottering about.

The wind was on/off jankiness, of course. :Ange09:

On Thursday I static flew my new F-One Furtive 6.4m for the 1st time.

Today, however, I was out on the 8m Genetrix Hydra, the largest kite I own and predictably I was underpowered all day. :(

I met a polish guy called Wojciech who was attempting to fly a Sky Tiger that he had bought from a charity shop.
It was still crispy and in great condition but the wind wasn't there for him, so he decided to film me on his phone instead and send me the footage.
The quality isn't great but nor was the riding.

Luckily the wind opened up just at the right time allowing for a few short bursts to cool my face.

So here's to more sessions on the soccer fields. :beeremoji:

Watching the crab move down the beach takes some getting used to as my brain is telling me that it looks like a regular bug from a distance pointing left to right, and therefore I should be expecting it to move left to right rather than stationary and away, if that makes any sense. Great high energy video

jantie - 26-9-2020 at 11:03 PM

thanks RedSky.
as unusual it is to explain it is to ride it.
so much like a regular buggy and yet so different.

I would definitely be great to go there or have you guys over here..

Crashed my 2.2m into a tree o_O. Wanted to fly somewhere I could see the nearby kitesurfers and, seeing only one tree in the area, told myself "well, I'm smart enough to know how to avoid a tree"
At least I learned to consider my line length before judging obstacles!"

RedSky - 30-9-2020 at 07:04 PM

All part of the course. I've made retrieving kites from trees into an artform. Even got an 8.5m Blade caught in a satellite dish atop a school building once. Had to go in a ask for it back. They let me climb up onto the flat roof in view of teachers and kids. :D

Me too. This wasn't in a tree, but was in a thorny busy - very painful to retrieve.
