Anatomy of an ATB jump

Drewculous - 24-7-2009 at 02:27 PM

so im trucking along on my board and think, hey a jump would be sweet right here... What is my next step to effective big air?

Do i hook the kite to the top of the window, as its going up, squat down towards the board, right when i feel the pull, pull in the bar, go up, let the bar out... re direct the kite back, and pull the bar in just before i touch down... sound right?

This is kind of what ive gotten from the good ol' youtube, and some from carl in another post, just trying to put it all together, Thanks!

don't forget: when squatting backwards dig hard upwind that will give you even more pop

it takes some balls when youre squatted down, but you got it... kite back to 11 o clock (or 1 oclock).... pull in and hive it all the jump youve got.... redirect immediately and hard... wear lots of protection, and fall backwards instead of forwards, if you can help it...

try to get the kite in the direction you want to go when you land, it makes landings a little more seamless

and if you can pull in the bar just before you land to pad your landing. the more power you hold in the kite the bigger the jump. timimg is important. practice w/o the board until you can get air to get used to the pull.

An added question - are you fully pulling the bar in at launch > easing out to land > then pulling a bit again before touching down...OR, never pulling it fully to begin with and pulling in fully before landing?

step 1 cruising normal down the beach...
step 2 start lowering your stance (crouching), and begin to edge against the pull from the kite...
step 3 make sure all is clear...
step 4 steer kite back slightly behind you as quickly as possible (to 1oclock or 11 oclock)...
step 5 and 6 to be performed in rapid succession 5- when kite gets to 1 or 11, jump with everything you have, when you are finished exerting your jump immediately pull the bar in all the way for maximum llift...

step 7 redirect immediately and hard...
step 8 enjoy some weightlessness...
step 9 as you begin to land, pull bar in again to soften your landing...
step 10 stick your landing and steer kite in the desired direction of travel

thats pretty much how i do it, maybe someone else with more experience will be by shortly

This seems like a pretty good breakdown. At what point between steps 5 and 9 do you ease the bar pressure back out? It seems like that part is missing.

i never really thought about it, i think it happens right after the redirect... trust me, you wont really have time to think about it.... it just sorta happens
