Other types of Kitejumping other than the pendulum jump? And how do you do them ? Thanks everyone

OllieN - 10-8-2009 at 03:51 PM

Dear Everyone.

As the title says, what other types besides pendulum jumping are there ? Names ? and a "how to" would be very much appreciated. Links excepted :) :wee:

-Thanks

All jumps are based on the basic pend. set up, speed, rotations , invertion. handles harmess/umhooked all are additive with varying kite dispositions, redirects and loops. your creativity only limits you as well as skill.
duration ,float and height are The basic jump components
what you do btween launch and landing progresses with time and experience
search the threads and enjoy...ton of info here

landing is the critical part, but knowing the kite your using and being in control is essential.

Just the facts Jack.

Like air get a guerilla.....lol

Kamikuza - 10-8-2009 at 08:59 PM

Zooming up to the zenith is another kind of jump ...

furbowski - 10-8-2009 at 09:14 PM

phree's got it.

if you're picking your feet up off the ground with any regularity, try:

varying the angle of your runs back away from the kite while jumping (changes height vs. float),

or starting really low on one side and ending high (maximize time in the power zone = more air time),

or start with the kite high and go a little lower than normal with it as you jump (the pop feels a bit like a superman, need to make sure you have enough kite speed and wind to get the kite high for float before you come back down)

also learning to jump w/o looking at the kite is good.

you could try digging a pit, but that's usually for folks who haven't figured the pendulum yet.

or find a hill with wind flowing up it and try to jump into that?

what are you jumping on btw?

experiment--slowly push the envelope--dont forget to flash a big smile for the crowd way down below:o:o:o:o

PHREERIDER - 11-8-2009 at 05:00 AM

DO NOT LOOK AT THE KITE! look where you are going

Kamikuza - 11-8-2009 at 05:03 AM

Yeah, spot your landing - hurt my knee good not doing that :( long ago that was ...

USA_Eli_A - 11-8-2009 at 08:07 AM

take a lesson so you can LEARN WHAT NOT TO DO!

kitejumper - 11-8-2009 at 03:26 PM

haha i dont think there are instructors that teach kite jumping hahaha--let me know if you find one lol

snobdr - 12-8-2009 at 05:27 AM

Lets see theres the twisted ankle jump, theres the broken leg jump, busted hip jump, the slam and drag .......

PHREERIDER - 12-8-2009 at 05:58 AM

what are they and how do you do them. let me take out my how to manual ....

oh it's printed right here on the kite.....blah blah...serious injury or death.

Hmmm if you can avoid those 2 things expect everything else on a regular basis.

furbowski - 12-8-2009 at 07:13 AM

this thread is getting just a wee bit ironic....

don't get all twisted up by the youtube freakshows.

nice soft sand + onshore breezes + skills and common sense =a chance to fly! with very little risk of injury.

I get frustrated that beginers think that getting " supermaned " is the same as jumping. Getting tossed downwind out of control should never be considered a jump!

with practice... ive gotten pretty good at a jump similar to this... but always start slow... or pain ensues... i launch hot, dead center in the window.. scud 20 ft, hop, and go flying. I dont think ive ever topped 5 ft doing this jump... but it covers lots of distance. This is the only other jump (besides atb jumping) ive ever done besides pend jumping

I agree, although at times I've gotten significantly more than 5 feet of air doing the self induced superman. It's all about control though. If you are getting overpowered you are not in a good place.

interesting.....never had a chance to try these:rolleyes:

Bladerunner - 13-8-2009 at 04:56 PM

How do you direct the kite for a smooth / safe landing once you have launched yourself like this ???

To me a jump is something that you pull off and then land in a controlled manor.

I know that doing the superman is a lot of fun. I know you can land them with reasonably safe results but it seems impossible to launch a good one and keep the kite ( thus yourself ) in control ?

kitejumper - 15-8-2009 at 09:14 PM

that superman in the 2nd pic looks rather dangerous--i would think that a superman with a blade from a seated or crouch position would be safer--i think the xtra lift from the blade helps as well--i know when i was long jumping 2 wks ago--i felt super comfy and my feet were in front of me rather than lagging way behind--as soon as i get a gopro--i will demonstrate---it was just taking the blade fast across the lower window, then when it was directly in front,i swooped it up fast and i shot forward part superman/part kite jump--seems alot safer to me,anyways

The types of jumping I still dream about :

Bladerunner - 16-8-2009 at 08:07 AM

What Lad shows is a form of jumping without Pendulam force.
You can get lift off of wind heading up Dunes and Mountians riding those up-drafts + thermals can be done safe and in control.

lad - 16-8-2009 at 08:35 AM

Yes, and I imagine that as long as you are 'falling down" - you are putting tension on the CL, and therefore pulling on the front lines and keeping the foil going "forward" and inflated.
Does that sound right?
This even applies if you spun yourself around to the back or "wrong' side so you can face forward while gliding.

Those jumps in the videos are very good and im impressed but to be honest, i dont see the appeal of that kind of jumping, if i wanted to glide and float i would take up paragliding.

I prefer the fun of just bouncing around on a nice sandy beach somewhere doing smooth 6ft jumps.

I am impressed though, those guys have some awesome kit.

lad - 19-8-2009 at 12:43 PM

Actually, for me, this kind of power-kiting could be a cheaper, "back-door" way to enjoy some kind of paragliding action. It's just another option to the traction and leaping stuff.

furbowski - 19-8-2009 at 10:09 PM

one can sometimes find cheap gliders on the paragliding sites.

They find it hard to sell them on safely sometimes because there is not such a big pool of beginning paragliders learning on their own like for kiters, PG'ers tend to get lessons and use / buy what their instructor recommends.

But kiters can talk paragliders into selling their kites, sometimes, there was one for sale here from a PGer las year.

Lots of PGer's here tho and i ain't one yet, one o them might drop by with better info.
