cheezycheese - 19-8-2009 at 07:05 AM

anyone from the ny tri-state area..? i'm from upstate NY, but am willing to travel to fly with anyone as i'm often the lone kiter when i fly :ticking:

Todd - 19-8-2009 at 08:32 AM

Contact bobalooie57 he's from that area! If you want to travel then come on down and join us October 2,3,and 4th for the NJ Buggy Bash. njbuggyclub.com

Welcome to PKF; what do you fly?

bobalooie57 - 19-8-2009 at 10:16 AM

Hey cheezycheese, I'm in the Lowville area (Tug Hill/Western Adirondacks). I fly the local County Fairgrounds, School athletic fields, and sometimes a private airfield when the wind is right. mostly alone too, except for winter. Of course, for snowkiting, there is the Tug Hill, great for wind and lake effect snow! Where are you, and what do you fly? bobalooie57

cheezycheese - 19-8-2009 at 11:58 AM

hey thanks for the response. i am in Poughkeepsie, NY. probably a few hours from you bobalooie , but am willing to coordinate something. i am definitly interested in the Oct. meet Todd please send me the info.
currently i fly a BeamerIV 4m, prism p.3, and i just got a 5m 2line peter lynn peel yesterday.
i am interested in landboarding to start, would love to buy a buggy but i have nowhere to store it (no garage)

bigben91682 - 19-8-2009 at 01:41 PM

I'm in Albany, so not too far from you. Not a lot of great non-winter spots to fly, unless it's just static. I haven't made it out much this summer due to lack of time and wind, but I plan on rippin it up this winter.... Feel free to drop me a line if you ever make the trek up. I have a buggy that you're more than welcome to take for a spin. This winter I'll probably be frequenting Sacandaga, Round, and Saratoga Lakes depending on which way the wind is blowing....

cheezycheese - 19-8-2009 at 04:00 PM

hey bigben, let me know when you are flying. Albany is just a hop skip n jump away. i have only flown static, but now am looking to get more out of this. i go down to Jones beach a lot, and this store in Toms River NJ 'cobra kites' they
organize a fly every wed. on Seaside Hts beach. around 530pm. i am free nxt wed if you have any interest in going down. not sure how many power kiters show. i went 3 wks ago and besides me there were only 3 or 4 other pS-P-A-M-L-I-N-K-s in the air. lots of deltas and power sleds up though...

bigben91682 - 19-8-2009 at 04:29 PM

Unfortunately I don't have any free weekends until October, at least that's the way it looks right now.... I've actually ordered from cobra kites before. I may try to get down to the WBB, we'll see how the schedule pans out.

As far as when I kite, I keep everything in the car and just hit a local park if I have time and if the wind is blowing, it's usually pretty spur of the moment so not sure how well that would work out with an hour drive for you, wind changes a lot over the course of an hour around here.

This winter should be better though in terms of planned 'days' of kiting. Since it will be more on the weekends instead of weekday evenings.

So where do you fly around Poughkip?

cheezycheese - 19-8-2009 at 05:42 PM

i'm always scoping out new spaces. like you i keep my gear in the car, so whenever i feel wind i find a park. i have a place right off the hudson river i like to fly at, but also the soccer field at my kids school. but i have been taking frequent trips to jones beach this summer to fly.

snobdr - 21-8-2009 at 09:36 AM

Is there snow in lowville yet? Im waxing im boards already. Winter cant come fast enuff,

bigben91682 - 21-8-2009 at 01:25 PM

If this rain were snow, it would be a blizzard.....

bobalooie57 - 22-8-2009 at 02:36 PM

No snow in Lowville yet, I buggied at the fairgrounds this am in 80+ deg.heat. Prolly around the end of next month though, lol. Board is waxed and ready, I hope I can get it goin' this year, only managed some fast screamers ending in face plants last year, but my board skills gotta improve, must move on to the intermediate lessons at Snow Ridge this year. Can't wait too, but will take as much summer as I can get up here, they sometimes end early, and quickly too.

snobdr - 26-8-2009 at 09:29 AM

Bob would be more then happy to give you some tips on the board. Maybe if we are up there and the wind is bunk, we can hit snow ridge and ill get ya ripping like a pro. Are you coming down to njbuggybash?

cheezycheese - 26-8-2009 at 12:08 PM

i will be headed down as i'm so close. looking forward to meeting some of you guys. any tips on where to stay?

ragden - 26-8-2009 at 12:18 PM

www.apollomotel.com

There is also camping in the area if you cant afford the motel stay. If you need a couple websites for that, let me know. :)

bobalooie57 - 23-10-2009 at 08:33 AM

Just a tentative heads-up for Sun. 10/25. I contacted Jan from TI Adventures, I still have his Rockville Buggy from the spring. We are hoping to meet up this Sunday, with some other kiters we know from the Syr. area (snowkiters too). Tentative location is Southwick Beach State Park in Woodville, NY along the Lake Ontario Shore. Wind is predicted by NOAA to be W at 14 - G22! More to come...

cheezycheese - 23-10-2009 at 08:35 AM

Bob, i wish i could get up there but things are a little tight right now. hopefully as the season progresses i will make it up there. have enough fun for the both of us, OK...:bigok:

bobalooie57 - 23-10-2009 at 08:44 AM

Wish you could make it Marc, but with the 'new addition', I understand! Hopefully we will have a great day, and will have some pic's to share. I took about a can of duster to get all the Wildwood sand out of my digital camera. I had tried to take some pic's on Friday, when the sand was blastin' and got the lens all gummed up, only getting 1 still of basecamp, and 30 sec. of vid what looks to be 'Mass. Dave', zooming by at about 35 or so. Will keep you posted.

cheezycheese - 23-10-2009 at 08:50 AM

i look forward to hangin again...

bobalooie57 - 25-10-2009 at 04:15 AM

Me too cheezy, well today is the big day, weather looks right for a 'blast' on the beach at Southwick. Will have some pics later!

Southwick Beach

bobalooie57 - 6-11-2009 at 07:50 AM

Gonna be back at Southwick sun. 11/8 around 9-9:30am. There will most likely be lots of room for anyone else who cares to buggy/fly. Wind is forecast from the West at 10mph, dropping from there.

cheezycheese - 6-11-2009 at 10:39 AM

i envy you bob, but i just started a new gig (thank god!!!) and can't spare the time. hopefully when some snow drops i can make the trip....

bobalooie57 - 6-11-2009 at 12:17 PM

Hey cheezycheese, the pic is supposed to make you envious! lol Congrats on the new gig, would always be great to have you ride up here, but WW is prob. closer for you. This beach is really newB friendly, (except for the trees, but they are at least stationary) in that it is mostly empty at this time of the year, so you got it all to yourself. (I'd just like to share it!) Good Luck with the job!

bobalooie57 - 19-11-2009 at 07:20 AM

Hey all, I'm not sure of the date, but I've been told by the organizers that the Tug Hill Snowkite Rally will be held in Jan. 2010, most likely on Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend, so maybe some will be able to take advantage of the monday holiday. Heck, being that I volunteered to help set up this year, I guess I are one of the organizers! Now, if I could only order some snow...

bobalooie57 - 21-11-2009 at 04:13 PM

I spent the day at Southwick Beach again today, wind was W at 8mph gusting to 12, so fairly calm. I put my digital camera set on video in an 'outdoor products' waterproof box, which I strapped to my chest. I launched the NPW, sat down in the buggy, and took off south toward "the cut". I travelled about 6.5 minutes at an average speed of 15 mph(18 max) and realised the wind had gone to NW, and I'd better see if I could make it back N in the bug. Try as I may, I could make no better than a walking speed in that direction, so I decided to look at my video. Turns out I got 6.5 minutes of video of my arm, once in a while you can see past the arm and see the beach, or the kite, but mostly my arm! Then to boot, I had to fold up the kite and do about a 1.5 mile walk of shame. Lucky the only ones to see it were some cyclists and some seagulls. Spent the rest of the day within 500yds of 'buggy camp'.

bigben91682 - 21-11-2009 at 06:42 PM

sounds like a good day despite the walk of shame. wish I could have been outside, instead I was stuck working at a desk for 11 hours today....ON A SATURDAY!!!

bobalooie57 - 22-11-2009 at 03:29 PM

Here's a link to that video, even tho most of what you see is my arm in front of the camera, you do get to see the beach now and then. http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual...

rocfighter - 23-11-2009 at 07:33 AM

Hey Bob and others in NY, We will be in the Ithica area for a few days after Christmas. I know it's south of Lowville a bit :P but theres a good feild there and pretty flat.

bobalooie57 - 23-11-2009 at 08:58 AM

Keep us informed roc, there may be snow/ice by then? If not have buggy, will travel! Bob

rocfighter - 23-11-2009 at 09:20 AM

Will let you know dates when Sandy tell me :bouncy: But I think we are leaving here the day after Christmas. So the next few days I would guess.
I just drive the car and carry the bags. That way I'm always right.

rocfighter - 10-12-2009 at 04:19 AM

OK Bob I'm getting you up to date. We will be heading up to Ithica area on Sat. nite Dec.26 or Sunday morning the 27th. And will be there for a few days hanging out with the kids.I hear there is a good amount of snow right now so I am thinking snow blades instead of buggy. Will have to wait and see.
Dave.

cheezycheese - 10-12-2009 at 10:24 AM

hey Bob, looks like you got lot's of snow and wind comin your way... look forward to some pics :singing:

rocfighter - 26-12-2009 at 06:35 PM

OK Bob I hear there is a little snow up there. we got 18" last week here. So we are heading to the Ithica area tomorrow morning. Maybe if the weather is ok we can meet up somewhere.
Any one else in the area it would be cool to meet you too. I will try to get on the kids computer when we get there and see whats happening.

bobalooie57 - 26-12-2009 at 07:05 PM

Hi roc! and Happy Holidays to you and yours! We have some snow, but can always use more! I met a guy from Cooperstown named Dave that kite skis, he came up a couple of weeks ago, posts as coopkiter on kiteforum.com. He probably would know the local scene, (Cayuga Lake area) if you can get up to Lowville area, Tug Hill is just a short drive. I've been upon the hill acouple of times in very gusty wind and freezing rain, and didn't have much success, but walked 1/2 mile up the road this am and got moving under control with my 4.8M NPW, on my snowboard. Only travelled a few hundred yards before I pooped out, and I was totally soaked from the light mist, so I packed it for the day, but it was a great day anyway! Lemme know if you are free at all while you are in NY.

hey roc, how long are you goof to be in the area? There is a group of us coming up from DC for new years, you still gonna be in the area?

bobalooie57 - 28-12-2009 at 08:15 AM

Man,IDK what I was thinking, suggesting that Cooperstown might be close to Ithaca. About 20 yrs ago I drove to Ithaca via the back roads, and I remember heading S out of Utica, going thru Cooperstown to meet someone there, then heading to Cornell U. in Ithaca. Didn't seem so far then, now I recon it would be at least 1.5 hrs. Sorry.

Kamikuza - 28-12-2009 at 07:20 PM

I always see this thread title as "nynja" out of the corner of my eye and think WTF?

rocfighter - 1-1-2010 at 05:43 AM

Well Bob we went to Cortland for a week and it snowed every day but no wind at all. So we XC skiid, snowboarded at a local place. Never opened one kite bag :(

bobalooie57 - 1-1-2010 at 06:42 AM

Well, at least you had some fun in the snow! Winds aren't expected to be great this am, but we're gonna go anyway. At least get some pic's of the boys w/their big gun SA's. Tomorrow & Sun., however winds are expected to be W @ 15-20!

bobalooie57 - 10-1-2010 at 05:41 AM

Looks like maybe Chaumont Bay today? Wind SW @ 15-20!

bobalooie57 - 10-1-2010 at 07:35 AM

Yup, starting out from the Boat Launch, we'll have the igloo set up out there somewhere!

bobalooie57 - 11-1-2010 at 07:50 AM

We had a nice session on Chaumont Bay, L. Ontario, yesterday. Jan and Chris on their 9M Frenzy's, Mike and I with our 8M Access II's and Jackie on her black/pink/grey 6M Access XC. It was a fun afternoon, pretty smooth (8-10) NW wind, I was able to get in a little riding myself! I still need a lot of practice, though! :bird:

rocfighter - 14-1-2010 at 05:27 PM

Hey Bob. We just had our anual meeting for Connectikiters. And we are planning to make a bigger showing in Loweville this year. So I hope to see you there at least. And I will plan to bring my buggy.

bobalooie57 - 14-1-2010 at 06:06 PM

We could wow everyone by having a race on the far turn!

rocfighter - 15-1-2010 at 05:45 PM

Well thats if the wind blows!! I just bought a new 5m too. Newer, Faster, Better, It's all good man.

Shoe - 12-12-2010 at 01:15 PM

Hi everyone,
I thought I would chime in too. I am in the Tri-Lakes area, just outside of Lake Placid. I am new, and starting in the snow. If anyone is in the area, or visiting the area, please let me know. I hope to meet everyone at Tug Hill on Dr. King's weekend!

Cheers!

Joe

bobalooie57 - 12-12-2010 at 09:06 PM

Welcome to the PKF, Shoe. We will be getting together soon, if winter decides to hang around on the weekend! It looks like this week will bring some more cold/snow. We can only hope, and then pray for wind, too! Bob

bobalooie57 - 4-5-2011 at 06:51 AM

Just to dredge up an old thread. I plan to be at Southwick Beach State Park, on Lake Ontario, Saturday, May 7th from noon 'til? Wind is predicted WSW at 12, mostly sunny, mid 50's. I'll try to get some vid.

snowspider - 4-5-2011 at 07:23 AM

Morgan and myself will be there. I've shortened the lines on my Vipers and curious to see how that works out. I wonder what the high winds did to the beach.

bobalooie57 - 4-5-2011 at 07:33 AM

I haven't been there for a couple weeks, Last time wind was SW, and the beach was kind of small, so I flew static mostly. The few runs I made were quite bumpy, though. If the wind pushed the lake up to the dunes, it could have smoothed it out a bit.(or made a washboard, who knows?) Will be good to see you there!

snowspider - 4-5-2011 at 11:29 AM

bobalooie57 - 8-5-2011 at 04:12 AM

Well, the beach was even smaller, Lake is very high. With the SW wind (light, at around 8mph) we flew mostly static. I flew Rasta's Fury (7M NPW9 by KM4) and snowspider flew his 6.8M Viper, then his 10M Blaze. Didn't get much buggying in, but had a good day anyway. snowspider hinted at a new project, a waterspider! I can't wait to see that one, and maybe try it out!

bobalooie57 - 8-5-2011 at 08:20 AM

So, I got some video of yesterday, but it is just snowspider and I, static flying large, rather slow kites, so instead I thought I'd post a little video of what I hope to do today. Last week I rode a little at the horsetrack, Lewis County Fairgrounds. It's in rough shape right now, due to the winter, but they will get it into shape before the fair in July. The wind today is predicted from the NE, kind of opposite from this video, but it should be rideable.

snowspider - 9-5-2011 at 06:32 AM

Bob yesterday I set up the little above ground pool we use. I'll be doing a float test tonight after work. I was telling one of the local kids I was'nt to sure if this thing will work his response was "Mr C. everything you make works". I like the Myth Busters expression " failure is always an option"

bobalooie57 - 9-5-2011 at 06:42 AM

 "Out of the mouth of babes..." Truer words have never been spoken! Can't wait!!

bobalooie57 - 10-8-2011 at 09:46 AM

I've got Friday off, weather calls for mostly sunny, mid-70's, wind W to WSW at 10-15 mph. Sounds like a nice afternoon at Southwick Beach! I'll be at Lakeview WMA around noon! :wee:

snowspider - 11-8-2011 at 08:33 AM

Bob it looks like today is the day to be there. I'd love to be there but I've got to get some things done on the house.

bobalooie57 - 7-10-2011 at 10:44 AM

Off again today. :sniff: And of course no wind. Sunday, however looks promising for Southwick Beach, with a SW wind at 10-15(maybe!). Parks officially "close" this weekend, which means this is the last weekend you'll have to pay for the priviledge of using your state lands!

EDIT: Until next spring, of course!
