Ok guys i know my last topic started a land slide but i promiss this one won't:singing:
I need a suggestion for a ground peg. The problem is i want/need to bring a kite with me when i fly[i travel for a living] and have to put the peg in
my luggage. I have no need to raise the "red flag" when my luggage is XRay'd with a spike in the suitcase.....ideas??Jolt - 28-8-2009 at 10:01 PM
Any metallic object that long could get flagged, simplest thing to do is to check in your luggage, if they dont charge for that, if they do try to go
into a hardware store at your destination, and just buy a spike from there.

how about plastic? I understand there are some nice ones in home depot and the like.
I've only flown in the US once since 9/11, that once was enough to tell me TSA was a good reason to stay away from american airports for a while, but
I carry ice screws, ice axes, survival knives, and other interesting gear in check on baggage on the time.

Hardware stores sell heavy duty pegs very cheap. They are plastic and not too threatening. HQ's pegs are plastic. ( OOPS ! I thought they had a cheap
plastic version ? )
You don't NEED a peg ?
I have used my water bottle. Set the kite at the edge flagged out and the bottle on the folded over upwind wing. Side launch and go.

really, whatever you check should be fine... but i think the plastic ones would be a little more forgiving, and they would get you through the airport

here in the states... anything pointy will cause you grief... if you have your kite as carry on tho, you can usually put 2 and 2 together for them,
but you'll have some 'splannin' to do.
you might just grab a carabiner, and hook to a fence or other object... may be easier than dealing with security...
or carry a big tube sock... and fill it with dirt/sand when you find a spot. And anchor an edge with that like Bladerunner was saying (a little more

HQ pegs are steel with a rounded tip. I have recently flown with a kite in carry-on and an HQ style stake. The object was flagged by x-ray and
examined by hand. when I explained what it was and noted that it was blunt, it was allowed. On the return flight it was not even questioned.
I really like these pegs and so do my customers, as I sell so many. They go into any density sand or soil just as easily.

In checked luggage, I definitely prefer the HQ stake.
HQ Kite Stake
In carry on luggage, the blunt end, orange cap, and the fact that the sheath is actually marked "HQ Powerkites" generally pass muster.
If the winds are moderate and you are flying on grass, this will get through carry-on without an issue.
Carey Quick Stake
Folks seem to have a rough time confiscating Elmer Fudd's kite state.
On the train, you can get 50 pounds of kites, pads, stakes, carabiners, and Jeep parts on as one of your two carry-ons without issue.
They have K-9s in DC, but that's only an issue if you are carrying meat products.

If you plan on using a stake on the beach and not on a grassy field. They have those plastic screw in umbrella holders that screw right into the sand.
I tie a piece of rope around it and put a stainless carabiner on it and hook my brake loops onto the carabiner.Jack1988 - 29-8-2009 at 08:22 PM
