Tug hill, lowville, sandy pond, pulaski, bobalooie is from that area. Killer kite spotbigben91682 - 16-10-2009 at 09:03 AM
I'm in albany, not much around here until the lakes freeze but sacandaga, round, and Saratoga lakes should be good once the water stiffens up a little
bit.vwbrian - 19-10-2009 at 12:58 PM

MA gang memeber checking in. Nov / Dec is a bit early for the snow scene out here. There's a pond in my backyard and only 1 time in the past 11 years
has it been frozen by January 1st. Depending upon the winter it is usually late January to early Feb before the MA lakes are frozen. Large fields
will be your best bet for snow or head further north if you will be leaving by January.bobalooie57 - 20-10-2009 at 07:44 AM
We had heavy frosts early this week, but a warmfront has moved in and temps are up in the 50's now. We usually start getting snow by the end of Oct.
up here, but it might be into Nov. before it is good for riding.. I will continue to update conditions in the Tug Hill region, cuz I can hardly wait
for snow, and am looking forward to seeing more kites on the hill this winter!snobdr - 20-10-2009 at 07:54 AM
Bob ive been watching weather in your area. If you get a decent snow 6+ or enuff to be ridable close to a weekend ill head up there. Im dying to get
some snowkiting in. I was going to head out to central pa last weekend but the snow reports were to spotty. Getting good snow cover, good wind, and
finding a nice sized field wasnt happening.
Shoot me a U2U.bobalooie57 - 23-10-2009 at 09:14 AM
Looks like a decent spot Bob, let me know how you like it. I make it out to Syracuse from time to time, maybe we could meet up there. (not for the
25th unfortunately....parents are coming out to visit me and the wife).william_rx7 - 24-10-2009 at 09:54 PM
Hey guys here's those spots. Wishing everyone a great snowkiting season.
Wm, thanks for those links! I plan to take some pics and maybe a little video that I will add to your site! Conditions are looking good, if a little
cool. Forecast is for Ptly Cldy, wind W-WSW at 10 - 20 , temp. maxing out at 50 deg. F. I hope I'm not the only kiter there, but it will not be the
best conditions for walkers, so we'll probably have the beach to ourselves! I agree with the snow part! tho most here would say I must be crazy!bigben91682 - 26-10-2009 at 02:22 PM
so bob, how was it??
WILDWOOD NORTH ???
bobalooie57 - 27-10-2009 at 04:26 AM
Well actually, Southwick Beach was known as the Atlantic City of the north before the great depression. It is a rather unique area along Lake
Ontario in that there is a rather wide packed sand beach, and before the depression had it's own boardwalk with amusements and rides. It also has the
best buggying I have experienced in the north country! I had a clear (mostly, there are a few trees to negotiate around) 1.5 mile run up and down the
beach, with only a few walkers to contend with. I could have gone further in either direction, but to the north is private beach, and to the south
the beach narrows up some, and I might have made it past that point, but I might also have landed my kite in a tree, and I didn't want to go there.
Here's a short, raw vid of me going back and forth on the beach with the 1.4m Beamer. http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual...bobalooie57 - 27-10-2009 at 04:31 AM
Funny, when I preview the post, all that code shows up as a video. Edited, and posted link to video.bobalooie57 - 27-10-2009 at 05:06 AM
BTW, this location is wind dependent only, no tides to worry about! Dead West is best, but any west is workable.bobalooie57 - 28-10-2009 at 08:28 AM
So anyway, IMHO, this spot is definitely worth a 3-4 hour drive to buggy. I'm trying to get some people together for Sun. 11/1. Wind is predicted
from the west at 15-20kts. and only 40% chance for rain at last check. I'm using NOAA info for Southwick Beach, NY and also the info provided on
william_rx7's site LocalKitespots.com.(which I think is great btw). Gimme a shout if you think you can make it!bigben91682 - 28-10-2009 at 03:45 PM
Sounds like a hoot Bob. I'm in Boston this weekend otherwise I would definitely consider the trip. Depending on the forecast for the following
weekend, I may be able to make the drive out then, schedule permitting, probably on that sunday. Guess it all depends on the wind and weather.buggydanny - 29-10-2009 at 06:32 AM
bigben
If your going to be in Boston this weekend and you have some free time you could fly with us. Low tide is in the afternoon, U2U me if you think you
can make itbigben91682 - 29-10-2009 at 08:12 AM
Unfortunately I'm going to be busy with Halloween festivities so my kites won't see the sky this weekend. Thanks for the offer though. Where do you
fly? nahant?buggydanny - 29-10-2009 at 06:33 PM
Bigben
I and several others fly at Nahant often. It is a great beach for traction kiting, have you ever been? If not you should give it a try when your in
town and have the time. And if you need buggy or kites, many of us have extras and are willing to share.bobalooie57 - 30-10-2009 at 06:47 AM
bigben, I'll probably be as Southwick Sunday 11/1, and every weekend day with west winds until the snow flies! I've added you to my list of
nykiters, and will e-mail all with weekly updates! also weather and conditions once the snow starts piling up!bigben91682 - 30-10-2009 at 03:22 PM
danny - I've never been to Nahant but I've heard good things. I'd love to try it out sometime but every time I'm over in that neck of the woods my
schedule is always pretty full, perhaps someday the stars will align.
Bob, I got your email, and while I can't partake this weekend, keep them coming. I really want to get out there at some point, I'm actually thinking
maybe next weekend I may have Sunday free...not sure yet, still shuffling things, but I'd love to get out there and check out Southwick. Once we get
into the winter months my schedule free's up a lot, so I'm sure I'll get out there for some snow action if I can't make it out before that.doublespeed360 - 31-10-2009 at 05:08 PM

I did have a good time at the holloween party(ies), it was a great night to be outside - 70 degrees on 10/31 in the northeast - crazy. Wind was nutty
though, I'm almost glad I didn't have my kites up, probably would have hurt myself.
Bob - how was southwick today???bobalooie57 - 2-11-2009 at 11:15 AM
Did the beach at Southwick again Sun. 11/1. Somewhat less winds, Friends Jan (TIKayak) and Jackie attending. Heres a photo. Looking South on the
beach.
bobalooie57 - 7-11-2009 at 06:35 AM
Today's forecast is for SE wind at 15, g-20+. Maple Ridge Farm horse track is rideable at the turns with SE/NW wind. Loading the buggy now.bobalooie57 - 7-11-2009 at 03:59 PM
Back from a day buggying at the farm. Rode about 3 hours on a cinder horse track, so got some nice slides/fishtails. Had a real blast!bobalooie57 - 8-11-2009 at 05:19 AM
Heading back to Southwick today, wind isn't supposed to be all that (WSW- 5-10), but the sun is out, and it should be a good day anyway. Another pic,
looking out over the lake (W).
bobalooie57 - 9-11-2009 at 09:46 AM
Went back to Southwick yesterday, winds were just not there for buggying, so I flew the NPW static for a while. Then decided to walk the beach
southward to what is known as 'the cut', where Sandy Creek empties into L. Ontario through Lakeview Pond, about 2-2.5 miles. The beach was probably
80-100yds wide, mostly because the winds were down. No tides here, the beach is totally wind dependent, so when winds are blasting, the beach is very
narrow. Not a problem if you can get any power keeping your kite high, but if it
drops, it could end up in the trees. Anyway, a view looking north from the cut.

..bobalooie57 - 9-11-2009 at 10:23 AM
Oh, I forgot to add, while I flew the NPW static, I was being watched the whole time by a Border Patrol officer (about 1.5 hrs.) Guess he thought I
might be smuggling in aliens under the guise of kiting. I wanted to offer to teach him how to fly, if he could waste our tax dollars watching,
he might as well get some air and enjoy the sunshine!snobdr - 12-11-2009 at 05:57 PM

Got a little (2" at my house) measurable snow last night, forecast is for more thruout the week. will post up-dates as I can. Car went fubar this
past weekend. Need to figure something out. Jan is looking to meet up this weekend, he has some new sites to check out. Best winds are looking to

Same couple inches here in Albany, but more this week makes for potential outing this weekend.bobalooie57 - 8-12-2009 at 06:43 AM
Woo Hoo! It looks like it's gonna be on this coming weekend! Light snow on and off since Sat. nite, steady snow predicted starting tomorrow, wind E
on Thurs. G-45:shocked2:,W Fri. G-35! Sat. they calm down to 20 out of the west, But hoping Friday's blow out of the West dumps big pow on the hill
in the form of lake effect! Will keep updating through the week.bobalooie57 - 11-12-2009 at 06:45 AM
well, I was going to get a ride up on the hill this am to get some pics of the snow, but looked outside and decided to just take a couple here!

I went to Southwick Beach State Park yesterday am to see conditions of the beach for buggying, and found clear beach in both directions from the park.
The DEC and Parks people were at the first 'boardwalS-P-A-M-L-I-N-K- South of the park area, repairing weather damaged boards, some giving me the
as they went past my setup spot. I also got to talk with one of the
local neighbors North of the park, who advised me to also head north if possible, there's 4 more miles of beach in that direction. I expressed my
concern for trespassing, and he said most folks he knew would think the buggy was so cool, and if they didnt like it, I'd be off their property before
they could get outside to say anything anyway. It's a thought, with a west wind that would make at least 7 miles from one end to the other! Anyway,
wind was S at first, only about 3-5mph, but steady, so I was flying the 7M NPW static. When I started getting some scuds, and the wind started
cranking around to WSW, I hopped in the buggy, working the kite in about 8mph wind, I headed S and was able to make 10 mph, when I turned to the N I
was able to 'park and ride' at an easy 15mph on the bike speedometer! I had to work the afternoon shift, but I'm definitely going back with a picnic
lunch tomorrow. Wind is predicted to be W at 8mph! wheee!bobalooie57 - 22-3-2010 at 06:32 AM
Well, I returned to the park on Saturday, and flew/buggied from 9:30 am to 2:30pm with a few breaks to rest, have lunch etc. Started out flying the
7M NPW static, the wind was at best 5mph from the SSW. When the wind picked up enough to scud, it also clocked around to mostly W, so I got some
great riding time in up and down the beach. The beach is still in kind of rough shape, washboard-like from the ice-runoff, so making 12 mph in those
conditions was quite fast enough, I was getting bounced around a bunch! Now that the 'ice-breakwater' has melted, a good blow from the west will
smooth it out, but will likely result in more debris being washed up onshore.:sniff: Gonna bring bags with me next time, and police the area during
my rest stops. I got to talk with a fantastic couple that was beach walking, Flora and Harris, 86, and 'older than that' who were quite amazed by the
whole kite/buggy concept, and at first didn't want to believe that the 8mph wind was actually moving me up and down the beach, they had to get some
pictures to show their 'kids' who are my age, of course.rocfighter - 22-3-2010 at 06:42 AM
Bob are you planning to head down to Wildwood in May? We are thinking about it. It would be cool to see familiar faces.bobalooie57 - 22-3-2010 at 07:03 AM
Right now, the plan for me is to leave here on the morning of the 13'th, arriving in WW that afternoon, and staying 'til the morning(maybe noon) of
the 17'th, back to work 3:00 pm on the 18th:barf:gotta pay the bills. Probably camp at which ever campground is the fav. Is it May yet??? Really, the
beach here at Southwick (only 50 miles away for me!) rivals that of Wildwood with the right winds, but will likely be off limits once the camping
season opens, unless there is onshore wind between daylight and whenever the lifeguards start their shift. I'll have to talk to park officials. It
would be awsome to have a mini-bash right here, where you could walk outside your tent, set up and be flying!bobalooie57 - 28-3-2010 at 04:47 AM
I went back to Southwick beach, yesterday. Winds were from the S at first, then clocked around NW, so I didn't get much riding in, I flew 'Rasta's
Fury' mostly static. I did manage a few short runs southward when the wind clocked around, but the wind was so light that I would quickly catch up to
the kite, and the 'gybes' to get back home only gained about a buggy length or two at each turn, so made it a fight all the way back. I did pick up
trash for about an hour while I was there, from the park S to the first Boardwalk, and there was a lot less than I saw last week, must have washed
back out during the week. I still managed to collect about 5 lbs of mostly little bits of plastic, straws, drink bottle caps, cigar 'tips', and
tampon tubes! A picture from the beach looking SW to Nine Mile Point. oops, got to resize first.
bobalooie57 - 2-4-2010 at 06:52 PM
Well, I had a sweet buggy session today at Duflo's airport! Wind started out SE (best for this location, imho)at 10-12, clocking around to SW at 15+.
I started out with the 4.8M NPW, and was going up and down the runway at about 19-20! When the wind shifted, I switched over to the 3.5M Imp, which
I recently switched from 3-line/bar to 4-line/handles, which made for a vast improvement in handling. SW makes for a fast reach in one direction, but
you have to work it coming back, so I was making 20+ going up the runway, but only 7-9 coming back. I had to back off after 20 though, I was getting
lots of wobble in the front(could have been from my knees knocking together, prolly ought to get measured for my pink skirt!) Get too far down the
runway, though and you get all kind of effects from the Hangars/outbuildings, sometimes ending up walking a ways to get wind back.:embarrased: Lots
of people honked going by, no one stopped. 3 or 4 hours in the bug, man am I sore now! I'm thinking Southwick beach on Easter Sunday...bobalooie57 - 6-4-2010 at 10:31 AM
Saturday is starting to look pretty good for Southwick Beach, wind predicted W at 15 or so. Mostly Cloudy, 45 degrees or so. Gonna try to be there
by 10:30 with a picnic lunch!bobalooie57 - 8-4-2010 at 07:13 AM
Saturday shaping up even better, wind W @ 23,g26! 45-50deg. ptly cldy. 2 or 3.5M day!bobalooie57 - 10-4-2010 at 03:24 PM
What a day, wind coming in hard off the water, pushing it up close to the trees, I set up the 2M Beamer, which is on the standard 20M (I think)
lines. I had to put the kite too close to the trees for my comfort, so I took out the 2.4M NPW which came with short lines (10M ?) Better, more room
to manouver. I look to the north, towards the beach parking, and see kites in the air! 2 of them, both foils in the 2-3M range by the looks, so I
jumped in the buggy to go see who. As I drew closer, I see two home-built buggy's, and as I got close enough to see a face, I see it's snowspider and
his son flying the kites.(Ballistic's, I think) ss conceded that the wheels on his homebrews were a little small, but I was following him and hit at
least 17mph, and he was pulling away! Anyway, it was great having other kiters at the beach here! I took pictures, and intended to post them here,
but my photo editor won'topen them for some reason(hasn't happened before)so I can't resize them.
here's a pic of snowspider in his home built buggy.
bobalooie57 - 11-4-2010 at 07:25 AM
and one of him about to get into my buggy, look at that chop in the water!
bobalooie57 - 6-9-2010 at 05:31 AM
Whew, some time for this ol' thread! Last time at Southwick (see last post) I met up with snowspider. Well, I met up with him again yesterday with
some epic conditions at the beach. Wind was right off the water at 20 mph to start, and picked up from there, I put up the 2.4M NPW on short lines,
and was soon zooming up and down the beach. I stopped to take a rest, and looked towards the parking area and saw snowspider's homebuilt buggy on top
of his mini van. Turns out he was camping with the boys for the weekend. He was soon set up and flying his 5M Apex, and riding his buggy up and down
the beach too, not too many pedestrians to worry about, the strong wind / heavy chop keeping most away from the water, but a couple guys from Oswego
showed up and tore up the lake with their 9M LEI's! A great day of kiting on Lake Ontario! I'd have some pics or video, but the !@#%^ dog ate my
camera! snowspider - 6-9-2010 at 02:32 PM
Bob I got home today and there on the table is a box from Borntofli. Hello 2.6 and 3.9 PL Vipers , clean and crispy .... Thank you Borntofli. I wish
I had then for Southwck , n/s beach , w winds , 20mph slightly gusty , talk about a day late. I 'm going to get a couple sets of short lines for the
apex's just for beach riding , that place is beautful!bobalooie57 - 22-9-2010 at 08:19 AM
Sat. looking promising at Southwick. M-Cloudy, mid 50's, wind WNW at 20-25! :wee:shehatesmyhobbies - 22-9-2010 at 04:30 PM

Thanks for all your efforts! See you in Wildwood!bobalooie57 - 23-9-2010 at 07:50 AM
Sat. prediction update, 30% chance of showers, wind W @ 18-30mph!:o Small kite, short lines, hang on!bobalooie57 - 25-9-2010 at 06:59 AM
Yeah, it's overcast and the wind is blowin', but I was informed at 9:00pm last night that my services would be needed at work this afternoon, so no
kiting for me today.:sniff: Oh well, the O.T. will come in handy at WBB!:roll:bobalooie57 - 8-10-2010 at 07:36 AM
Got out to Southwick yesterday with winds 25-30 right off the water! I tried to launch the 2.4M NPW, but got a bridle caught on a knot and spun the
kite into one heck of a mess, so I launched the 1.4M Beamer and buggied for about 2 hrs., up and down the beach at about 20mph, (the sand at the edge
of the water had an unusual 'stickyness', so I had to ride a little higher on the soft stuff) before the wind shifted NW and dropped off to about 15,
I switched to the 3.5M Imp, and practiced working upwind in short looping runs, then screamin back to the south! A fun day of "hookie" from work!bobalooie57 - 10-10-2010 at 07:27 AM
This afternoon looks good at Southwick, with WSW wind at 20-25. Mostly sunny, 62 deg. F. I hope to be there by 2 pm for a pre-Wildwood tune-up!bobalooie57 - 10-10-2010 at 05:56 PM
Excellent Wildwood warmup today at Southwick. Wind stayed mostly from the SW, so the fast run was to the north, and I had to work it to get to the
south. I took out both the 3.5M Imp, and the 4.8M NPW5, both on 20M lines, and switched back and forth between them. The Imp was somewhat
underpowered, upwind was attainable, but a chore with many switches to gain speed, but the NPW, though pulling like a truck to the side, would make it
upwind further before having to turn back as often. Before the last run of the day, I folded up the Imp, and put it away, which was probably a good
move, 'cuz this is what happened next. I took a nice long run to the N, past the State Park, and on to "private beach". I got about 1/2 mile past
the "line", and the wind died! Now,this put me about 3/4 mile from my set-up spot, which was just past the beach front camping area. I folded up the
kite, and since I didn't have my walk of shame rope with me, grabbed a foot peg and headed back towards my set up. As I was walking, I could see my
set up spot, and a group of people came out of the camping area onto the beach, stopping right in front of my set-up. I could see as they looked
first north, towards me, then south, then toward my pile of gear on the edge of the dunes. I was about 1/2 mile away at this point. They looked
toward me walking one more time, then turned and walked to the south, towards the boardwalk that goes over the dunes, which they reached at about the
same time as I reached my set up. I looked around and all was there, except for the kite stake that I had left out in front of my set up.shehatesmyhobbies - 10-10-2010 at 05:59 PM
Glad you got to warm up the green machine Bob! Sucks about your kite stake, but at least all else was there!See you in about 10 days!bobalooie57 - 10-10-2010 at 06:14 PM
Part 2- I looked all over for that stake, I found the hole in the sand where it had been, and around it there were many 'stab' marks into the sand,
and footprints that weren't mine. Adult and child footprints. I looked to the south where the group of people had gone, and they were now headed
back, and sure enough, I could see a small boy, maybe 5 yrs old, jumping around, stabbing something into the sand. By now I'm getting kind of
steamed, because the parents/guardians of this child obviously know he has something that does not belong to him, and likely belongs to the owner of
the pile of gear they saw (with another sheathed kitestake right on top of the pile) prolly the guy pulling the funny cart they stopped to look at.
So I waited for them to get close, and asked if they always allowed their child to take things that don't belong to them? Their answer was "No one
was around, and it looked like a piece of trash, sticking in the sand like that. I actually had to ask for the "piece of trash" back! And they
wanted proof that it was mine! I had to show them the other stake, and the empty sheath as proof! I said to them,"What is this world coming to when
a parent allows a child to take something that does not belong to them, then asks for proof of ownership?" Their reply was along the lines of "you
shouldn't leave your things unguarded, and he thought it was just trash" Sorry for the rant, but the nerve of some people!shehatesmyhobbies - 10-10-2010 at 07:08 PM
To further your rant Bob, what parent would let their 5 year old play with a kite stake anyway:puzzled: Can't figure that one out all by itself!Todd - 15-10-2010 at 10:48 AM
Sorry to hear that Bob, I had an adult do the very same thing to me in my field. He didn't think I saw him do it but when I came sliding up to him
real quick he must of knew the jig was up. He simply asked If it was mine. doublespeed360 - 15-10-2010 at 03:33 PM
had the same thing except it was my cooler he was walking off with. i sometimes put my keys and bag in there but not that time. gave me some bull sh%t
line and i was 1/2 mile away but i had the wind on my side, down wind run . swear word insert now.Todd - 15-10-2010 at 03:37 PM
Did you smile and tell him Happy Birthday Paul? bobalooie57 - 16-10-2010 at 02:59 PM
Yeah, well it looks like I'll get to give them another try tomorrow, that is if they are there, cuz' it looks like I'll be there
with wind WSW @ 21-28! Sooo lucky, another pre Wildwood tune up!:Ange09:bobalooie57 - 17-10-2010 at 04:35 PM
Still buzzin' from a 4 hour buggy session at Southwick today. Wind was W @ 15 - g25, used my 3.5M Imp mostly, though the wind died down for a bit, so
I pulled out the 4.8M NPW, and of course the wind picked up again, so the beast was trying to pull my arms off! Switched back to the 3.5M for the
rest of the session. It's so satisfying to look at the beach covered with buggy tracks at the end of the day, and know they are all mine!:wee:bobalooie57 - 20-11-2010 at 07:07 AM
Southwick calls again! Wind forecast is for WNW@25-30!:wow: I put the 2M Beamer IV on the 17.5M Vector lines I got from Rip. Video will follow!bigben91682 - 20-11-2010 at 09:05 AM
I'm heading out in Albany as well, taking the F.L.Y. (Flexifoil Land Yacht - Formerly frankenzooter) to a local field, seems calm at the moment but
the forecast says otherwise....bobalooie57 - 27-3-2011 at 05:50 AM
Back to the old stompin grounds today at Southwick Beach. I hope to meet up with snowspider to get some vid of his test drives in his new home
builds, and get some seat time. Wind is pred. at NW--->W @ 14mph. Should be fun!bobalooie57 - 28-3-2011 at 08:48 AM
We made it out to Southwick yesterday. I met ss, and son around noon, weather was fair, about 29 deg. F, wind started out NW and worked it's way to
SW by the end of the day. ss has a new home built buggy, his best so far, I think. Unfortunately, I thought my extra battery pack for my camera was
in my jacket and it wasn't, so I didn't manage to get any vid or pics. It was cold, but a fun time, we managed some good runs along the beach, and I
managed to tree my 4.8M NPW twice, with no major damage. Morgan got some runs across the parking lot on the KGB, with a 2.8M Viper (I think), up and
coming talent there! There are still sandsicles frozen to the splash guard of my buggy! Fun day!snowspider - 29-3-2011 at 05:12 AM
I still keep thinking about how could we clear the beach of drift wood though it does add to the excitement and challange. It was a great day , I'm
still smiling and the whole neighborhood gang has checked out KGB. I can see putting a wet suit on and doing some high speed runs right at the
waterline befor the park gets busy , yee haa!snowspider - 1-4-2011 at 11:31 AM
Still snow on Mt Washington and ice in the Adirondacks. I plan on visiting Piseco lake in the southern Adirondacks tomorrow and maybe sunday , there
are still ice fishermen on the lake. Now that I've got a smart phone and know how to use some of it , I can at least report conditions on site.bobalooie57 - 2-4-2011 at 06:46 AM
Man, if Piseco doesn't work out for Sunday, Southwick is beckoning! W@15!:bigok:snowspider - 2-4-2011 at 11:01 PM
Piseco lake 2' of ice and 3' of snow on the ground , what a difference a 2 hour drive makes! The surface was good but the winds went back and forth
from zero to lofting . I was using the big Viper and was reminded how much I like my depowers in gusty winds.
If all goes well I should make it to Southwick late afternoon 4pm ish.
