tips on learning kiteloops?

flyjump - 16-10-2009 at 08:21 AM

Ive been progressing confidently this year, and i feel as though i'm ready for the next step. I'm a landboarder, and i usually just go as fast and possible so that i can go really high. I've been practicing spins and stuff, but now i feel like i want more. Does anybody have tips on learning kiteloops? I use pl scorpions and the vpc is set to the most depower knot. should i change them to medium or most power before i learn loops? Should i start by just hauling balls and cranking it in a jump? Whats the process of learning this trick? Obviously i'm on land, so the fear of trying it the first time is there. Is it better to do it in stronger winds so that I go higher and have more float time? What do I do?

I'm definitely not one to be giving advice but advice I've heard from others is make sure that when you do it, go all in. Don't do it half a$$ or your a$$ will be gra$$.

Thats what i figured, but if there is a "better" way to learn id like to know it. Or if there are tricks to practice to get geared up for them.

what size scorp do you want to loop?
the smaller it is the faster it will loop.
unhooked loops are easier but you need to be comfortable flying unhooked first.
put both hands on one side of the bar and fishpole it.
doing a down loop transition is always a good place to start.
and commit commit commit. bailing half way through is the worst thing you can do 'cos "you will get hurt"!!!!

lol yesss, i was hoping you'd be the one to give me tips. I have a 16 and a 13, was planning on using the 13. The main reason i was asking for tips was that i knew that full commitment was necessary because i don't want to go from 12 feet up to a dirt dive followed by a vicious dragging session. i'm most scared of not going high enough to get the necessary float to recover. I thought about going to the edge of the lake and practice them so that i would land in the water from the shore. So should i start from riding atb? or just practice on the grass running around?

can you explain this trick for the lesser informed among us...(me);-)

its when your kite turns in a full loop or circle doing one full rotation. It produces a huge amount of power, but when it is done right you can go high and then float down. If done wrong it will slaughter you. Look up kite loop on youtube and you'll see some good examples

i dont know if this will help as my technique is not text book. i like to spin the bar before the loop. plus these loops were done on the 15 syn in about 15mph winds.

carltb - 16-10-2009 at 12:41 PM

oh yeah. this is what happens when it goes wrong.............

snobdr - 16-10-2009 at 01:35 PM

Carl why do you spin the bar? Seems like your making the trick harder then it is.

carltb - 16-10-2009 at 01:52 PM

when you finish the loop your lines are untwisted!! i know its a bad habit i need to get out of, but its something differant like adding a grab etc. i do do loops the normal way aswell but i kinda like these ones.

snobdr - 16-10-2009 at 02:04 PM

Ahhh adding a little bit of your own style.

flyjump - 16-10-2009 at 02:04 PM

yeah but when youre carltb and you have style, you can do stuff like that

ripsessionkites - 17-10-2009 at 11:03 AM

there is style in crashing too.

Ahhh, taking advantage of that fabled "bar torque" technique are ya? ;)

While i have not looped my plynn i have looped my lei's many a time. here is my break down

heel side right hand forward

-build speed, send kite to 10/load pop
-as soon as you leave the ground send the kite to 1oclock
-Now pull your back hand as hard as you can to loop, if you are afraid to commit, put both hands on the back of the bar. You want to throw your loop while there is tension on the lines, this means you are going up or down. Up is preferable. if you throw the loop at the top of your jump, the lines slack and you get yanked)
-Point the board down wind and ride away

i have done on VI 13m very similar
light wind is great place to start on the ATB in 10mph with transitions both forward and backloops . and start on the water at about 13 -15mph

set up like a jump and at the apex pull in the back hand (and doing when the kite is fairly high in window) and your snatched down wind at decent speed in the new direction. this where you make light wind pops really smoke. with speed in the new direction launch on a wave for a downwind running jump and this really keeps the flow nice with repeating the loop and jumps, and at this point you can really mix up for nice downwind ride.

the ATB commands good timing and control skills

the water requires the same as above and solid stones or atleast a HOOJ set
