Smaller BrotherArc for my VenomII 16

tobytobsen - 19-10-2009 at 01:18 AM

Hello,

I currently have a VenomII in 16 and am very happy with it. However, it is a lot of kite. When the wind is enough to fly the kite, it gets real fast until its too strong for me on my landboard. (So i basically can just fly between 6 - 10 knots) Part of the problem is that i fly in-land, so most of the wind is gust. (Got lofted the other day about 15 feet high :roll: )

So I was looking to complement the 16 with a smaller size. Should I get at 13 or a 10 to go with it?

What wind will a 10 or 13 start to fly in/make sense? will it need more or less wind then the 16? (weight)

Thanks,

Toby

P.S. this is what the wind range calculator tells me for my 95kg:

16= 6-19 knots
13=9-24 knots
10=16-33 knots

Since i normally only use my 16 till 10 knots, I could start using the 13 from 9+... or use the 16 till 15 and then start using the 10... ? What do you guys think?

Oh, yeah, winds are normally in the 6-14 knots range, and when its real windy it get up to 25, 30 - pretty seldom

I could get cheap a Synergy in 10 or a VII in 13

a 10m arc (any model) is a high wind kite. normally 30+mph. so i would suggest a 12-13m arc.

... how much extra wind range do you gain by meddling with the internal trim straps?

Well, I think I always have it set to have most de-power. Its always a fight between too little wind to fly and too much wind for me to ride.
I guess I will have to check the settings, bc I'm not sure. Thank you guys for your help.

my 10 gets very little use it really has to be nuclear conditions for me to get it out

like carl only in 30+ would it even be considered, for the water,

my V13 has been the single most used kite in my second year but the 16 was dominant in the first .

the 10 is usable in less wind and is super quick, but to produce the same big airs and float it needs a a bit more wind.

i would advise the 13 . i am at 200 lbs. and use it for land and water

I use a 10m Scorp a lot with the ATB in winds above 13mph. Unless your winds are typically at this speed or higher you will be missing a lot of kiting days with a 10m.
The range that I saw for the 13m V2 on the PL calculator for your 95k weight is 11mph to 29mph on land. This is huge range with the added benefit of being water capable should you desire to kitesurf.
Also, as your skills increase, you will become more comfortable flying a larger sail.

10M in water the winds would have to be 30+

Ok, you guys have me convinced me - no 10.

So, does the 13 and 16 overlap too much? Does it make sense to add the 13, or should I look into selling the 16, after purchasing the 13?

I will also play with the adjusters next time i'm out. It's freaking cold here now...

Someone here said recently that the larger arcs aren't really for lower wind but more for the bigger guys. If you are riding the landboard with much lower drag than on the water, there will be lots of overlap between the 13 and 16 but that's a good thing. You would fly the one that has its range mostly in the winds you had that day but probably won't have to set up a second kite because you have the overlap. I just picked up a venom 13 and with the 15 synergy and 19 venom, I should have most winds I care to ride in covered with that range.

I have always only had a 2 ARC quiver. Started with a 1120 and 630 S-Arcs, 15m and 11m G2's, now 15m and 10m Syns. All gave me roughly similar wind range with a large sweet spot. 10-12 knots to around 30 plus knots. S-Arcs had the smallest range and overlap. G2's saw an increase in wind range and overlap. The range in the G2s were more scewed toward the high end. The Syns have an amazing range, sweetspot and overlap. The best yet!

I have also a lot of use of a 16m and 19m V. Both were way more fun to fly than the 15 G2. Had awesome wind range and great sweet spot. I found that the 15 Syn is way more fun to fly and has a similar bottom end but with way more top end to the 19 V.

Thats what i thought, Zero - 2 arcs for most of the wind. Thank you for the details. Do you just surf, or also landboard/buggy?

I agree what you say, BeamerBob, the smaller Arcs for lighter guys. I am not light, but i need an Arc which drags me less. And it will probably be the VII 13.

So the 13 will probably start flying at the same wind speed as the 16, but have less power. I wish i could try out both. :barf:

I do surf, snow and ground.

the 13 makes up for in it quicker handling. esp on the water . the 16 at first will have heavier bar feedback and for bigger guys feels better for timing development . a quicker kite like 13 or 10 requires quicker timing and balance. if your starting the 16 is hard to give up but 13 will give better up wind rides over a greater range
