The "Did you fly your kite today?" thread

treetop - 27-10-2009 at 10:11 AM

Let's brings some fun into this thread. Post where, with what, maybe a picture/vid, and whatever else you'd like to describe. :wee:

ragden - 27-10-2009 at 10:13 AM

Does a Sunday session at Cape Henlopen count? Pictures included below... wife went a little nutz with the camera...

kitejumper - 27-10-2009 at 10:39 AM

no wind today, but i unpacked my quadrifoil xxl 7.1, that should count for something, huh? we'll talk saturday, when the winds are supposed to be 20-25 mph........

Maven454 - 27-10-2009 at 10:40 AM

No :(

DAKITEZ - 27-10-2009 at 10:47 AM

treetop I want to know if you flew today ... 40 knots

furbowski - 27-10-2009 at 10:54 AM

no pics today, but two goes with a blade, static jumping, the first in the AM for about fifteen minutes before work, I wasn't quite getting lofted in the gusts and definitely wasn't going for height, just light jumps and control, and didn't leave the kite up long enough to check out the gusts in detail, didn't seem the careful way out...

another surprise session in the afternoon kind of late just before the wind goes weird around dusk... one of those things where by being a little clever about timing one can free up an unaccountable hour or two at work... spent the first thirty minutes untangling the job a newbie did to my lines arghhh :flaming: then taught them how to do it right before getting him going again the wind getting worse all the time.

but it was still good enough to get about half an hour in and i have two new people at the self-launch / self-landing / and pack up right stage! now they're ready to figure it out for themselves with a little help from my quiver!

a very good day!

and up again soon for a little more flying before work starts to get in the way of our lovely 12-16 knot onshore winds, one more day and they're gone!

treetop - 27-10-2009 at 11:12 AM

Knowing that others are flying sure is motivating! Furbowski, kiting throughout the day keeps the kiting shakes away--I tried this morning to fly in the AM hours but not enough wind. Dakitez, tons of wind in the afternoon, but I will definitely fly at lunch time and after work. How about you? :D

DAKITEZ - 27-10-2009 at 11:17 AM

its crazy gusty here ... I will fly tomorrow

Drewculous - 27-10-2009 at 02:51 PM

i'm prolly out till the weekend... winter storm warning... 6-15" of snow in next 48 hours, and 30-50 mph winds....

may do some boarding friday if the wind is favorable tho

f0rgiv3n - 27-10-2009 at 03:06 PM

Wind's all over on the west i guess cuz here in idaho it's going to be gusting up to about 30 today, tomorrow's going to be peerrrrrrrrrrrfect!!! 17knots and sunny warm at 45 degrees :)

action jackson - 27-10-2009 at 03:50 PM

Only got 5 hrs of flying time today:singing::roll:!Had 15-30mph winds! Started the day with 19v,then 15m proto and finished up with 10m v! We had 30 kites on the water at Ft. Desto. I hit a 2 ft shark this morning with my board. No pics sorry!....................aj

I bet that shark didn't know what hit him. Literally. Ft. Desoto would be fantastic to kitesurf. You could make most any wind angle work.

treetop - 27-10-2009 at 08:38 PM

Flew a 2m at lunch and a 5m after work. Loving these winds:smilegrin:. Found a new place to fly, near work too: Live Oaks Park, San Jose, CA.

I want snow :/...

I would also like some wind....

joeblinky - 27-10-2009 at 09:48 PM

wind is dead here but i just got a scrub quasar board.

wind is supposed to be 18 mph when i get off work tomorrow! not to much but i think will be good to learn to use my board in.

bad thing is i only have a blade 3 6.6m.... would really like to have a kite with a bar instead of the handles for the board.

i got rid of my flysurfer speed because didn't get consistent jumps without a board and when it did it scared the piss out of me! lol

wish i still had that thing....

f0rgiv3n - 28-10-2009 at 12:53 PM

Wind's ablowin'!!!! Come on end of work, get here faster! :D

Jack1988 - 28-10-2009 at 03:00 PM

Great idea for a thread!

Havent been out today, still aching from yesterday, going out tomorrow though yay

mougl - 28-10-2009 at 03:05 PM

No flight for me, at least for another week or 2. Lord have mercy on my kites when I can launch again! Lol!

BigMikesKites - 28-10-2009 at 03:23 PM

I went out today. Broke out the Crossfire II 3.0m which hasn't seen much action. I paid close attention to the bridles and untwisted some of them to get this thing dialed in. Winds 17-21 mph.

Whew! Power city. I still managed to get a luff here or there, but for the most part it seems almost there. Brake lines on the 2nd knot from the end. I swear at least once it had me off the ground for a second. Thats hard to do with me.

stetson05 - 28-10-2009 at 03:25 PM

nice static flying of a brooza III 7.5m I have on a pass. It is always amazing to get a kite up in 5mph or less and fly it around for a while. I would rather have enough wind to get rolling but I will take what I can get.

flyjump - 28-10-2009 at 04:08 PM

got the new mbs core 16 out today for the first time. I was using my 16m scorpion in 20mph winds. It wouldve been a good day to dial in the new board, but the wind kept changing direction from the south to the East. since the wind direction kept changing i was lofted a few times about 14-15 feet up. Kinda scary when you aren't expecting it. I was able to get a few speed runs in, and a few transitions in with the core 16. I needed to loosen up the trucks a bit when i got home since i didn't have an allen wrench with me. i'm sure that'll make getting used to this board a little bit easier. I started in winds that were about 17mph and it kept getting stronger to the poiint where i couldn't hold my ground. Hopefully tomorrow will be a better day with more predictable winds. Timing the jumps just right in shifty winds is also a little tricky. I got a few smooth lofty jumps with good landings, on the other hand i also hit my face one the bar one time which sucked. I'm totally happy with the new board!!!!!

flyjump - 28-10-2009 at 04:40 PM

Oh yeah, I forgot that I relaunched a scorpion 16 after crashing it and folding up all weird. Those of you who've flown a scorpion know how much relaunching them sucks

BeamerBob - 29-10-2009 at 06:36 PM

I finally got to fly and ride the buggy today. I didn't set any speed records but I was rolling. Wind was from 0 to 5 with an occasional "gust" up to 7 mph. I used my new Reactor II 8.6m. The wind wasn't steady enough to really evaluate the kite but it seems to stay in the sky better that the RI if you don't keep it moving forward good enough. Anyways, I got to roll today and its been awhile so I feel lucky.

stetson05 - 29-10-2009 at 10:57 PM

I flew my 11m Neo today but really couldn't get moving on buggy or board. I was in soft grass and wind was max 8-10mph. I could keep the neo up no problem but no real power. It makes me wonder what kite to get to get moving in low winds. I am curious how the Reactor II does or what else might get me rolling in the lower winds.

furbowski - 29-10-2009 at 11:48 PM

12m ace, first real go, 4-8 mph mildly gusty onshores, soft sand, perfect! It's been over a year since I've been able to move up from the 8m, so it was a real deja vu day right down to the way my forearms felt like noodles after fifteen minutes!

yep it turns about like the 11m in the "hooj ballz" thread, maybe a bit quicker as that guy has wayyy longer arms than me... sometimes the redirects start about half-way through the run-up to jump, but the float is very nice. I can maybe tighten up the brakes a bit more, but there's not much slack left with the brakes pointing at the kite.

i didn't dare dip it lower than about 60 degrees off the ground, messed up once and got more than 10 feet up with the kite down around 45 degrees, i missed the redirect and landed moving fast with the kite heading straight for the edge, but because of the big kite / low winds / soft sand it was actually really easy to deal with the collapse and recovery at the edge of the window.

first flight, new kite! a nice day out...

trancein1 - 30-10-2009 at 11:18 AM

Rain, Rain Go Way !!:bigok:

treetop - 30-10-2009 at 01:38 PM

Yesterday, after work ~6pm. Got some relaxed flying in.

kitejumper - 30-10-2009 at 05:27 PM

buggied today-first time in 2 weeks--what a release!! took gopro vid 38 minutes worth--now to figure out how to put on utube--flew my xxl 7.1 today--what a beast of a kite--it was really fun--but i can pretty much guarantee this kite will obe me in the near future--but what the hell--its all good anyways.......:wee:

carltb - 30-10-2009 at 05:39 PM

i gotta get out this weekend. ive not flown on the land for weeks. im trying a few secret spot. grass by the sea and tarmac by the sea.

Jack1988 - 31-10-2009 at 08:52 AM

Flew yesterday, winds werent as strong as they predicted :( It was ment to be 15 constant gusting to 20mph, we got down there and it was 11 to 13 for an hour then it went under 10mph and my brother lost his phone:no:

WolfWolfee - 1-11-2009 at 07:23 AM

Great morning here, clean 20 mph winds and 4" of fresh snow. !6M Scorpion was my weapon of choice, be nice to get more snow little hard on the feet. Found my camera but forgot to check batteries, dead of course. Will pick up new ones this week and try and get some video on. Couple of really nice lifts with great float time, no height but good distance.

Bladerunner - 1-11-2009 at 07:51 AM

The Vancouver gang had a great day yesterday.

Airin is constantly proving Her natural abilaty.

The Young fellow was Ga,Ga in Love with the Syn. Pulling HOOJ static jumps and showing huge improvent on the ATB. His Dad got going in the Buggy and I think has been Properly hooked !

Solaris brought out the new 2m Reflex and we gave it a go. The kite felt natural to beginer Airin and She immdiatlely / instinctively started pumping away creating power enough to ride it in low wind.

Rip' Got dragged through a huge puddle :P and everyone was wet + dirty. :piggy:

I got a good run in on the Radical Demo.

Ken'3 Hit above 40kph NOT easy in our small pak.

This MAY have been the last great day of the season for us but a GREAT DAY it was ! :bigok:

wannabekiter - 1-11-2009 at 12:23 PM

I had a great session yesterday! It even made my right middle finger where the line goes in between the fingers numb for a few hours afterward :tumble: Too bad it started to rain

BigMikesKites - 1-11-2009 at 12:47 PM

Went out this morning...almost no wind. The Reactor II 5.5m came out. What a wonderful kite. Wind picked up to about 5mph and switched to a 3m Hornet. Also a great kite. Passerby got a lesson. It was a great morning.

acampbell - 1-11-2009 at 01:33 PM

Great session yesterday on Jekyll Island. Wind was SE built to 12 mph with enough E for 3-mil cruises down to the southern water tower and back a few times. Few enough people to easily maneuver around. Day was dry and in the 70's with severe clear.

Set up the Synergy 15m but the wind dipped of course after getting it laid out, so switched to the 8.6m Reactor II. Trips south were upwind so the harness and strop were mandatory. This kite goes upwind like a bandit! I pulled some tacking angles that I thought would be impossible. Downwind runs were a Nantucket Sleigh Ride. Park and ride heaven.

excused from jury duty

ride_wv - 4-11-2009 at 11:59 AM

I flew my kite yesterday actually, but it was a circle of events that provided me with some unscheduled time to enjoy decent wind...A few months back while flying at a local park that gets very little public use, I was interrupted by a State Police patrol car. The officer parked and got out then headed my way so I landed and secured the kite. I braced for a headache. As it turns out, this Trooper has been flying power kites with his dad for many years and was psyched to see someone else enjoying windsports. We traded contact info. Flash forward to yesterday...I reported for Federal jury duty, but was not selected for the jury and dismissed because I was aquainted with Trooper JRW one of the witnesses in the case. Having no immediate obligation I returned to the park and flew for an hour. So yesterday I applauded the legal system and thre freedom to fly a kite!

acampbell - 4-11-2009 at 12:40 PM

So my wife is running a Board meeting (Board of Directors, not kiteboard) in San Juan, Puerto Rico this weekend and I am obligated to go along. I am surely throwing some kites in the suitcase. Is the beach there good?

BeamerBob - 4-11-2009 at 12:46 PM

Beaches look nice to the East and you have a ENE 12mph sea breeze on Saturday. You have your buggy broken down for packing yet? :cool2:

action jackson - 4-11-2009 at 03:58 PM

3 hrs on the H2O this morning 15-20 winds, 20+ in the morning! It would be easier if I just posted on days that I don't kite!............aj

WELDNGOD - 4-11-2009 at 04:14 PM

in my head , most of the day. Welding gives you lots of time to reflect. LOL:ninja:

treetop - 5-11-2009 at 11:45 PM

Always good winds there Weldngod =). Today, took my cousin to try out power kiting. Started him off on a 2.5m for an hour or so. Went to a 5m, and the winds started picking up, and ended the day back on the 2.5m. I think we have a new power kite enthusiast.

WIllardTheGrey - 6-11-2009 at 12:04 AM

oooo I wanted too but had to work.

Probably a good thing.

acampbell - 6-11-2009 at 09:02 AM

Well here I am in sunny San Juan, PR, with a PL Twister 5.6, a building breeze on-shore from the water and no room to fly. The beach is just large enough to fly, but just a few people here and there, even in front of the abandoned hotels, leaves no room without clothes-lining a local.

Reminds me of the Commander Cody song...
"Well here I sit, all alone with a broken heart,
I took three bennies, and now my semi-truck won't start..."

Maven454 - 6-11-2009 at 02:34 PM

YES!!! I got a bit of flying time in at Anacostia Park with my 4m PKD Brooza.

jeech - 6-11-2009 at 02:39 PM

Flew my snapshot 1.2 today in the vacant lot at 2410 and 3081. Winds were variable, from force 1 to force 3. Had a couple of gusts up at the upper edge of force three and the kite actually pulled me forward a bit! :wee: Can't wait to have something a little bit bigger that has that much power regularly at lower wind speeds

jeech - 6-11-2009 at 02:51 PM

Hey willard, what service gives you the wind/gust spread in graph form like that? or did you do it?

stetson05 - 6-11-2009 at 07:15 PM

what do you mean nothing special? I think is was spectacular!

fletcht - 6-11-2009 at 09:35 PM

Yep, flew today. It was great.

Sod Farm.jpg - 26kB

bigkid - 7-11-2009 at 07:38 AM

fletcht, Is that all the farther south you went? there's another field past the house.
I didn't see any speed indicators on the pic, were you below the speed limit?

jeech - 7-11-2009 at 08:15 AM

you had your kindergarten son scribble on a google satellite image? sweeet:roll:

fletcht - 7-11-2009 at 08:37 AM

Bigkid, I wasn't sure about the field further south. Next time I'll travel on across. I think we both need are GPS's calibrated, or at least your eyes. Jeech, not my son's those are my artistic skills. 20 miles of scribble lines.

tobytobsen - 7-11-2009 at 08:51 AM

No real wind today, still tried :-) See the charger post.

jeech - 7-11-2009 at 09:06 AM

haha just pullin your leg fletch. looks like fun, never thought of taking my gps and tracking before, maybe I'll do that soon.

stetson05 - 7-11-2009 at 11:43 AM

Fletcht, I like the pic. I wonder where the sprinkler lines were from your tracks.

kiteloopkid - 7-11-2009 at 12:55 PM

had a great session yesterday on my 7 though..

there was a little wind today.. but it kept changing direction :( mainly to offshore

fletcht - 7-11-2009 at 01:53 PM

Stetson, didn't you notice, I went under the sprinklers. Actually the open area in the upper right. Had one run around the upper end of that line. Then that open area near the center. The lower field the scribble lines were running parallel to the sprinklers. The lines furthest south went around the sprinklers. Great time. Too bad my SD card went belly up on me only captured 30 seconds of vid.
Next time.

rudeboysaude - 7-11-2009 at 02:17 PM

Sweet session in the buggy this week.

got some jumping practice in with a 10M Venom.

Also got my experimental SLARC to lift off the ground so that was encouraging.

Got to fly an F-arc for the first time as well. Good fun in the field waiting for snow!

I would like to do a SLARC someday! Very nice.

Had a nice session with the 18 Phantom and then the 24 Syn. Wind was building throughout the day leaving me to some great runs in the field until it happened... got plucked out like a cork out of a wine bottle. The PKF voices were screaming in my head REDIRECT REDIRECT REDIRECT which I did and floated to a sliding stop. It was kind of weird floating away from the buggy watching it roll away.

bobalooie57 - 7-11-2009 at 03:53 PM

Flew my 2M Beamer in 15-20mph winds today at the horse track at Maple Ridge Farm, Lowville,NY. It was a blast tho I only hit 16mph in the buggy.

bobalooie57 - 7-11-2009 at 03:55 PM

anybody get to page 3 yet?

Maven454 - 7-11-2009 at 04:13 PM

Just set your post per page count to a really high number, then you don't have pages to worry about.

I put new batteries in my GPS and then held it out the window on the way home and it said 80 just like the truck. You calibrate yours, now. :P

rocfighter - 8-11-2009 at 04:46 AM

Heading out to the garage now to try to finnish my buggie. Just a few more brackets and a couple hours of welding! Then done or not we are headed to the beach for our monthly fly with Connectikiters. Hoping for some sun and wind.

Kamikuza - 8-11-2009 at 06:35 AM

Did you fly your kite today
Yes ... yes I did. And in 1 knot winds it was still very satisfying

soccerflyer - 9-11-2009 at 06:16 AM

Yes I did! . . . . . Well, actually I flew it yesterday.

I got my second session on the Waroo yesterday. Winds weren't cooperating. They were bouncing from 8-25, but I still got about an hour of time in. It finally clicked. I started to be able to fly it like my 3M blaze. There were times where I had to really work it to keep it up - and times I had to be careful not to get dragged. I even got a couple kite loops in (when winds were lighter). Scary thing was the winds would die and kite would start to fall and I would try to work it to keep it up and when the kite got almost to ground wind would pick and up and it would take me for a ride!! That was scary, but the good thing was safeties were in back of my mind. I even unhooked myself one time cause I was scared I was gonna lofted more than I was ready for. Plus in those gusty conditions you don't know when the wind will die and drop you.

But all in all it was good. I got two self launches in and one self landing and one kinda controlled crash. I got experience unpacking and blowing kite up and laying out lines and was the first time I used my new harness ( THANKS ANGUS!!!!). And I got to pack the kite back up.

Even a bad day on a kite is a WAY better day than any day at the office right?!?!?!?!?

Kamikuza - 9-11-2009 at 06:31 AM

Took my Vibe 2.3 out today ... again, little wind but I'm working up to using 4-lines on handles with my dickey wrist :)

BeamerBob - 9-11-2009 at 06:32 AM

I have a tropical storm/Hurricane Ida induced windy week ahead. There is supposed to be rain with it too, but I've got all the stuff in the car so I'm ready when the winds are. Wednesday is supposed to be the highest with 20 mph winds up at the lake. The 151 is in the car too. I hope the winds aren't too shifty and variable cause I'd love another water session. The buggy is in there for the lower wind days. I'll be hard to catch at work after lunch this week! Let's just hope the rain doesn't get in the way too bad and that the wind is safely steady.

ragden - 9-11-2009 at 06:43 AM

With Wednesday being a federal holiday, I might try for one last water session before it gets too cold. Could be really good... Course, I need to see if I can get some water gloves first. Had to cut my last session in the water short, cause my hands started going numb after 2hrs... :(

acampbell - 9-11-2009 at 06:45 AM

Finally got some sessions in with the Twister 5.6 on the beach here in San Juan PR this weekend. My feet were about in the surfline and the kite was close to a derelict hotel but it was workable and fun. Packed and ready to head home today.

ripsessionkites - 9-11-2009 at 03:15 PM

good winds all week, but rain the morning first

and we also checked out our "future" new home

thank you Ken #3 (TDMC96) for the pics.

action jackson - 9-11-2009 at 04:33 PM

treetop - 9-11-2009 at 06:18 PM

ripsessionkites, cool photos and wicked air!!!

jeech - 10-11-2009 at 02:48 PM

Just a direct copy from my new location post, but felt this half belonged here.

Today on my hour and a half break in between two of my classes I flew the Beamer 2m. Had some great winds, 8-15mph and had a ton of fun! I'm sure a lot of noobs have posts like this that are weak sauce flights to more experienced fliers, but it was a blast! I flew my prism snapshot 1.2 at first and had 3 guys yell, "sweet kite!" sincerely out there window as they drove by. And then when I put up the Beamer, I overheard 2 of the campus maintenance guys in their golf cart talking to each other and one of them said, "is that guy flying a parachute?" I couldn't help but grin to myself :spin::spin::wee:

redtailin - 10-11-2009 at 07:12 PM

finally got to get mine in the air today! Havent been out to the field in at least a month, and had about 4 hours to kill with winds around 25 gusting 30. I was a bit overpowered, but it was a great time on the landboard.

Overall, at one point we had like 15 guys at the field with about 6-8 kites in the air. Probably 4-5 cars stopped watching us at any given time.

3 of the guys I was with were throwing down 360's consistently, im still working on my rotation action, I can get my legs turned but for some reason my mind just inst letting my body turn too. No class tomorrow, and some good looking winds, so Ill be headed out tomorrow to see what happens.

im just stoked i got to fly a kite....finally.

WIllardTheGrey - 11-11-2009 at 11:05 PM

Had perfect onshore wind today, but it was only about 10mph and I only have my 3.5 Cult. So I did a couple of miles going no faster than a brisk jog but it was a helva lot better than not flying.

Went for my first session today on my Ozone Imp 3.5m three line trainer. Turned into a three hour session which ended up getting my father grandfather and grandmother to try it out. Was the most fun I've had in a while (don't tell my wife j.k) looking forward to my next time out.:bouncy:

went out in the remains of Ida. 12-15 wings gusting to ~20. I got quite the ride on my 5m ace! These were the strongest winds i've been in and the 40 ft scudds were pretty intimidating.... at first. I did a few jumps when the wind was a tad lower and got the best jumps yet!
After one huge tangle resulting from me having to use the KKs (and 15 minutes of untangling) I did one last run. I went up for a jump and got what seemed to be 8-10 ft. Redirected and landed softly. Exhilarating but nerve wracking for my first big jump!:wee:

Well, I found a guy a while back here in Kansas that kite buggys. I had a real hard time getting a hold of him for a while. He isn't very good at e-mail. I finally got his phone number and we have been trying to find a time that works for both of us to go out.

His name is Brad aka Jungle tommy. He has been to the Dead Bird Buggy Bash.

Anyway I finally hooked up with him on Friday and he has two buggys and we went to an old airport and buggied on the old runways!!!! It was awesome!!!

Wind was blowing about 15-25. I used his 2.8 libre speed II. It reminded me a LOT of my Blaze (that I need to get back).

I started out in the grass, just getting used to flying the kite and flying it sitting stillin the bug. Then tried just going downwind. Man it was fun!!! Then once I got the hang of it I rolled out onto the runway and kept close to the grass in case I got going to fast I could bail into the grass.

By the end of the day I was cutting upwind and could go pretty much wherever I wanted to. It was SO MUCH FUN!!!!!

I was in a flexi buggy. He had a nice big libre bug.

Today the sides of my thighs hurt. I guess from the bug when I was pulling hard to the side?

Anyway it was awesome and I can't wait to do it again!!!!

Took the Rev out and had a good thrash with that in what was probably too much wind for it  I think I'm getting the hang of spins without losing height ... got me thinking I could make my own Rev skin too - good winter project

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!! I finally was able to make it out. After 4 weeks of no wind when I have open time I finally just decided to skip class and take advantage of the wind ;). Gotta do what you gotta do right? Had an awesome session till dark. Landed my first 360! (Ok... well, it wasn't perfect... but i still did a 360 and landed it :P)

I made it out today with my 3.5 imp. Right after I was packed up ready for a two hour drive home from a service call. My apprentice and I talked about how it was windier than at home (20km gusting to 35km). We decided that since it was still early in the day that either of us didn't mind getting home an hour late. It was the best session I've had so far. Nothing but blue sky's and wind about 400 yards off a highway so we got many honks from people driving by. For the very first time I was brave enough to try pulling a full loop with the kite. While flying the usual figure eights, on a downward turn I decided to see what would happen if I kept the kite in a full turn. What do ya know it completed a full circle and went back to flying like it should. When I got the nerve I flew the kite fast across the window, arched up, then brought it sailing down only to loop it back the other way so my lines were back the way they were meant to be. Man was that an amazing stepping stone for me. Afterward I let my apprentice fly for his second time, I coached him through the same maneuver. By the end of the session both of us left feeling like we just invented fire or something. To top it off when I called my wife to let her know we were on our way home, she informed me that my 7 & 12 meter 06 Waroos from manitoulinkiter1 came in the mail. I won't be using those till next summer but it still made an awesome day even better. Another thing its Friday and the weekend looks windy:wee::wee::wee::wee:
