just bought a Flysurfer speed 2 19m Deluxe few questions

thelaserman - 29-10-2009 at 01:38 PM

So Its in the mail. I can't wait. I have a few questions.

What is the top end of the kite? I weight 235, I am replacing my 15m LEI which I can hold down to the low 20's.

The kite is only 3mths old with about 15hrs on it, are there any major things I should check.

I have read about people waxing the lines, should I?

Reading through old posts i saw a few comments that you can't launch at the end of the window, is that true with the new kites as well? Our launch is pretty small so a hot launch will be difficult.

Any other helpfull info or suggestions greatly appreciated.

ever flown a flysurfer before? they dont powerup till they are at zenith... i almost never preinflate mine... you dont want to, really... (IMO)... this takes some of trhe power off the hot launch... ive never waxed my lines, i have had no issues... if it doesnt have the FDS mod, i recommend it, powerzone does a great one

oh, and look up a mixer test on youtube... you will need it eventually,... dont play too much with how its set up, they are sensitive kites

ragden - 29-10-2009 at 04:15 PM

At your weight, I'm pretty sure you will be able to hold that kite down up to about 30 mph. Just pull in the trim strap and see what you can do. It has a lot of depower. I wouldnt worry about waxing the lines. The mixer test isnt a bad idea though...

At 190, I can hold the 19m with a steady 15 knots with a small board. For the top end, depends if only gusts but I dont think I'd keep it flying with a steady 20.

For now check the lines length (all should be equal). If one front line is longer (because was released on FLS) then stretch the other.

Eventually, read about the mixer test. Easy to do, so it tunes back the kite to original performance.

I prefer hot launch (even in 15 knots) because not many people can help with a Flysurfer. Most riders are on LEI, and they'll just think you are from another planet.

You can launch from the edge of the window with help from people or just sand one tip, pull the lines and wait for enough inflation before launching it.

In light winds, hot launch is preferable anyway.

With practice you can have the proper technique to launch from water if your spot is tight.

enjoy it !!!

during summer, it's my 80% of the time kite.

the speed2 kites can be a bit unstable at a neutral mixer... the 15 and 19 feel best at B-2 C-3 and afew knots tied in the Steering leaders to shorten them a bit and envoke a minute amount of backstall in light winds or at the window edge.

also a bit of advice ... in gusty winds, Keep it moving, the speeds like to fly as far as they can to the edge of the window , so keep the bar sheeted in a bit at the window edge and keep it moving side to side at zenith if when kite is overhead .

other than that... get used to the timing of the jumps and you'll know it when you get it right as you'll get silly air and hangtime.

enjoy !

what do you mean by b-2 and c-3?

how can i tell what version the kite is. I know its 3 months old and it is a deluxe that came with the fds and infinity bar.

Does that make it a 2 or a 2.5 and what is the difference?

ragden - 30-10-2009 at 05:20 AM

Considering the Speed3s JUST came out, I'm pretty sure you have a 2.5.
You'll need to look up the mixer settings as I'm not positive which lines are which at this point. I need to sit down and look at mine one of these days to measure the lines. As it is, I'm normally itchin to hit the water and just launch and go...

go to flysurfer.com, check their site for info... also, the mixer test video on youtube will help

b-2 means b line, minus 2 centimeters
c-3 means c line, minus 3 centimeters

minus what you say? the mixer test video will show you... just be cautious, esp at first

macboy - 30-10-2009 at 09:04 AM

So, despite the video saying that they should all be the same length the above means to say that you adjust B and C so they are - I assume shorter - by 2 and 3 centimeters from the A and Z?

thelaserman - 30-10-2009 at 09:19 AM

thank you for the explination. I am assuming i should fly it first to see if it needs this adjustment.

I have been searching flysurfer.com, but they dont have any info on the speed 2 delux just the spped 3 there is also no mention of 2.5

the speed2 deluxe or 2.5 is just a speed2, nothing different but the material bit more resistant, and may be you have the Infinity bar

Off the topic a little bit as this is related to a Pulse II but the comments on sheeting and the trim strap got me wondering... I have a pulse II and the directions state to pull the yellow handle on the trim strap to reduce pull in high winds and pull the blue strap to increase pull. Does FS mean to pull the blue strap whenever I want to increase pull (as in lower wind conditions) or was it their intention to say "use the blue handle to restore the trim strap to a neutral position after pulling the yellow"? The kite is fairly new to me as is depower in general so I'm just a little confused on that point.

yes. use the blue strap to restore full power after using the yellow strap.

here is how depower works:

pull the strap to reduce the length of front lines (versus rear ones) to have less power

it's equivalent to push away the bar

NOTE::

I have experienced that sometimes some Flysurfer (depends on how they are tuned) have more back stall in light wind conditions. In LW, it may help to depower the strap by 1 inch or 2, so the kite is a bit depowered, and will fly faster (less backstall) which can help to sin the kite, to get more apparent wind to go through lulls.

There is a big difference between the Speed 2 and 3. 2 is less forgiving.
You just need more skill rather than trying to solve skill with setting of mixer and guessing... You'll get used to it with a regular mixer.
Speed 3 is just an easier kite to fly. That's why many get them...
