Rev flyers have to see this

DAKITEZ - 12-11-2009 at 09:53 AM

I know I want to try it ... anyone else?

I'm thinking use a rolling pulley at the hook to save your lines :wee:

Whoa! pretty cool idea. Talk about getting close with your kite when it's flying.

macboy - 12-11-2009 at 10:41 AM

Brilliant! You could choreograph quite the dance with your kite that way!

ragden - 12-11-2009 at 10:43 AM

With the one danger that if something goes wrong, the kite is going to hit you. Very cool though. :)

Wow... that could open up a whole new kite sport.

yeah I wouldn't stand even with the kite till I had some practice. I think I would stay a few feet behind it. How cool would it be to have your kite only a few feet in front of you instead of 15-30m away.

That style of flying is called "dog staking". It's been done quite a few different times. Lee Segwick (well known for his Revolution flying) actually did a routine in competition that was called "Lady in red" which he flew (dog stake'd) a dual line kite to the famous "lady in red" song by Chris Deburg. Quite awesome.

You can use a dog stake with a ring to run your lines through or I have even wrapped my Rev around a pole and flew it that way next to me. You need to reverse the handles because right will be left and so forth. It really is pretty cool to do. :)

Did a quick search and was unable to find the video, will post a link if I find it.

John Barresi (quads and dual lines) still does a fair amount of dog staking. I think he has a version of his Little Red Riding Hood Rev routine done that way.

Ron Reich did a lot of dog staking with dual lines. I want to say that was 80's or early 90's.

Troy Gunn does his multi-kite thing dog staked with dual liners. :o

Is this guys kite set up correctly. I thought the down spars are suppose to be on the opposite side of the bridals?

they are on the opposite side. remember .... from the camera angle you are looking at the bridle side

vwbrian - 12-11-2009 at 08:36 PM

When you see the guy facing you and the kite bridal side twords you also it looks like the spars are visable on the bridal side. I am thinking the rev I got has the bridals on the wrong side. Should the writing on the rev be readable to you when flying Upwind normal kiteing not dogstaking or readable on the downwind side.

DAKITEZ - 12-11-2009 at 08:58 PM

I had to pull my rev out and take a look. The rev writing is on the bridle side ... so facing you when normal flying.

awindofchange - 12-11-2009 at 09:26 PM

Yes, looking at the kite while flying should show you the bridles, words & logo should be readable and the down spars (verticals) should be on the back of the kite.

I kept expecting him to tipstand it on his head :/

They do sometimes look like they're on the bridal side, but if you watch closely, they are on the side away from the bridle.

And now I know what I was doing wrong... I never thought of switching handles

I'll have to give this another go!
