Snow ATB

shaggs2riches - 21-11-2009 at 10:12 AM

Just been looking around to see if there is such a thing. I want to find a Mountain Board that would either have a ski on the bottom just like a snowskate. If there is no such thing than wondering if there would be a way to mount a ski on the bottom of the trucks. The idea is to have a snowski with the bindings and handle of a Mountain Board/ATB. If you have any ideas or know of a place where I could get one of these please let me know.

Thanks
Shaggs

Here you go....

EDIT: Wait....I re-read your posting again. Are you saying you want to skate portion of it to be "outside" the actual board area as opposed to under it?

Still might be worth a look:

There definitely might (sort maybe) be some tweaking involved.

You're embracing your inner "mad scientist" this week, aren't you ;)

ATB,
Sam

yep I've been trying hard to come up with new ideas to introduce to the sport. I think that those railz may work for what I want. My initial idea what something like this with the concave footstraps and handle of a mountain board:

Snow boards totally rock on the Snow with kites. The bigger the better and easier to hold your edge and air time is not an issue with bindings. IMHO

I played around with a number of "snow ATBs" ideas and skibuggies back in the day. IMHO, they all sucked! compared to a snowboard or even skis.

there is the snowskate which is a skatedeck, i never liked the foam deck due to snowbuild up.

and Burton and Lib made this: http://www.dogfunk.com/snowboard/Lib-Technologies-43in-BTX-S...

at that price, IMO ... i would buy a snowkite spec snowboard.

Keith Kalio did a lot of testing and ended up with an ATB with ice blades but as soon as there was snow it was straight to the snowboard.

Here is Keith's ice board...

I agree with the opinions above : skis on a mountainboard do not provide many advantage compared to a snowboard (except being able to ride strapless).
We have tried on our Flexboardz but it was mainly to demonstrate the interest of tilting wheels (being able to "edge" when a standard mtb will sideslip)...
you can see a short video of a test on snow here :

Here is a pics of the prototype (I had to sacrificed my kid's skis :) )

However, on ice, it's a different story since a snowboard probably lacks of grip on ice but sadly there is no ice in my neighbourhood to test/develop it...
Btw, if someone living in a cold icy place is interested, I will be glad to cooperate with him to develop it
here is a vids made in Quebec with blizzice :

If you have good ice conditions the SwitchBlade for a snowboard will make your snowboard work on ice too. A few of the guy use it here but we have maybe a one week window with good ice at best. They seem to like it a lot and do very well with it though.

Thanks for the info, I did not know about switchblade...it seems to be really efficient!
in fact, I was thinking about icewindsurfing like here
