I've been in the Google Wave beta for a few weeks, it's neat, but with a limited user base, at the moment it's not really that useful, yet.
The potential is huge, but the user training is pretty steep. To be successful, Google will need to have people re-think communication, a pretty
difficult task. Sadly, I think there are two things working against any change:
1) People are awash in too many new communication technologies.
2) People are stuck in e-mail, and frequently revert to the least common denominator.
If anyone can make this happen, Google can.

It won't offer the open nature of a forum but might replace some of the chats about local get togethers between close groups of friends. I can see
