HQ Neo selection

brplatz - 7-12-2009 at 06:42 PM

Hey all,

I have a friend, who also flies with me and has plenty of skill enough to jump to depower.

He has been heart set on a new HQ Neo II, but I am having trouble finding which size will work better for him, 11m or 14m.

Im leaning toward the 11m for him and he wants the 14m. Its hard for me to say though, cause my 15m Syn is perfect in the 15-25mph I get here. And I believe that the foils are more efficient than ARCS?!?! So that a 15m Arc is more like a 11-12m Foil?

Suggestions?

Thanks
Brian

What weight is your friend? The 14M really is only recommended for heavier people. Is he going to use it on land or water most?
If your 15M Synergy creates enough power, you want to look at the 11M Neo II

This is true, and maybe that comment was unrelated to the Neo, but the Neo is not a foil. Its basically just like the Arcs, in the sense that its closed cell.

Thanks Tim,

He weighs about 150 ish, mostly land but some water next summer... maybe lol
I told him the 11m was the way to go.

Brian

EDIT: The Montanas and Neos aren't closed cell foils?

The Neo's are foils. Much different from arcs. I'm pretty sure arcs are foils also. The Neo is a bridled kite though and much different than an arc.

I'd say 11m for sure. At 150lb the 14m would toss him around. The smaller kite will be cheaper, easier to learn on, have more usable wind range, will turn faster and should have plenty of power. Save the 14 for the big guys.

The NEO is indeed a foil. It is a traditional foil with a depower bridle. About the only thing in common with the neo and an arc is that they are closed cell and have a pulley system on the kites depower system. The neo runs much flatter to the wind which would make it more efficient per Sq. meter. The 11 is the common size it seems much like the 15m is the common size for a synergy.

power - 7-12-2009 at 08:58 PM

O I always figured it wasn't a foil because it was closed cell. Sorry for the confusion beamerbob and brplatz.

brplatz - 7-12-2009 at 09:25 PM

Thanks All, I think the 11m will suit him nicely. Except for them ugly backpacks that come with them lol

BeamerBob - 7-12-2009 at 09:33 PM

yeah, the definition of a foil is that it has cells that are pressurized with the wind. So a Beamer, or arc or neo can all be classified as foils. Then you can subdivide to fixed bridle/depower, and/or open/closed cell, single line/2 line/4 line.

power - 7-12-2009 at 09:34 PM

So what is significantly different about arcs and the neo?

DAKITEZ - 7-12-2009 at 10:07 PM

for land use i would def recommend the 11m. I had the 14m and on land it has a very small useable range. Pulled like a truck though!

BeamerBob - 7-12-2009 at 10:10 PM

The neo has a full bridle that gives the kite its contour that faces the wind. An arc has its shape controlled by having the profile between the two skins pressurized by the wind alone. It is supported by the lines on the spars at the ends of the kite. The neo is supported from tip to tip with dozens of bridle attachment points much the same as your twister except after the bridle leaves the kite, it becomes a depower system that allows the bar position to change the AOA (Angle of attack) of the kite. You should read ALL the helpful tips and primers that Angus has created on the Coastal Wind Sports site. I've read all of them at least once and most of them more than 5 times over the years. It really helps sort it all out in your head.

acampbell - 8-12-2009 at 10:20 AM

The ARC' are shaped like... well,.. an ARC. Only about 65% of the flat area is projected and providing lift, where the foils will project closer to 85%. That's why a 15m ARC compares to an 11 m foil for roughly same power.

The ARC may then sound inefficient but with it you get the stability and famous auto-zenith. The ARC can also deform in a gust, which is why they absorb them better.

With their relative efficiency, the foil will usually have a better (lower) low end.

I agree with all the above. I was really happy with my Neo 11m wind range, buggying in 6-18 mph

mgatc - 8-12-2009 at 07:37 PM

Def the 11, not the 14! The 11 Neo will pull like the 15 Syn with less de-power.
The 11 will be plenty for land boarding with your wind. Park and ride:bigok:

Damn I want a Neo......

dtoast - 10-12-2009 at 11:26 AM

Anyone try the NEO II yet?

BeamerBob - 10-12-2009 at 11:44 AM

I don't think they cleared customs yet.

BigMikesKites - 10-12-2009 at 12:31 PM

They are supposed to ship on the 15th.

power - 10-12-2009 at 02:21 PM

It seems like practically no one on here has one. Lots of arcs and fb, and some LEI's, but not many neos.

acampbell - 10-12-2009 at 02:28 PM

The Neos are out there; I have shipped a bunch, and in more than one case, customers immediately came back for another in another size. They just have not been out as long as other models.

power - 10-12-2009 at 02:29 PM

What do you think of them compared to the arcs?

Yea, what he said

acampbell - 10-12-2009 at 07:37 PM

I can only speak in some generalizations and then the rest will be subjective. And I am speaking from the standpoint of a buggy pilot rider and with little water experience.

Both meet the crucial CWS test in that they have the stability that lets me fly with the fingers of one hand and enjoy my favorite beverage with the other.

Generally, the Neo will favor the lower end of a wind range than the ARC because it is more like a foil and more efficient per square meter. The ARC will munch gusts better and favor the higher wind ranges for a size. Just remember that the ARC's will be larger for the same power- like a 15m modern ARC (Synergy) might be like 11m Neo.

But the ARC has the famous quality of auto-zenith where you can tie it off to a fence or bumper and then go and have many favorite beverages and then later be able to find it where you left it.

Also keep in mind the ARCs have been around for years and in many iterations/ flavors of applications ( land or water bias) whereas the Neo has been around in one version for one season and the new version 2 is only just about to ship. Stay tuned.

aronma - 11-12-2009 at 11:01 AM

As a closed cell, is there some sort of pressure relief valve on the NEO, in case you crash it on land?

no .. the only kite I know that has that is flysurfer

aronma - 11-12-2009 at 01:53 PM

Does that mean it will blow the chamber on a hard crash?

Even though it is an open cell foil, add the 2010 Ozone Access XT to the list of kites that has pressure relief valves  (leading edge under belly) for those unscheduled deck encounters. :o
