I got my new Gerber Hook knife in the mail today and was pleased to know I would now to be equipped help myself or someone else in the event of a
nasty kite incident.
Bladerunner enlightened me as to the benefits of having such a safety tool and he showed me two different spots where he stashes a small and then even
smaller knife.
But the hook knife is longer than I expected (7 inches) and so I am wondering where the best place to store it would be? I'm thinking somewhere on
the kite buggy might be a plan and, no, I can't really see myself strapping it to my calve like the rather Indiana Jones types in the crowd.
Do you have a hook knife or similar rescue knife and, if so, where do you have it so it is close at hand but still doesn't get in the way?tobytobsen - 21-12-2009 at 02:29 PM
Can you somehow connect it to your harness? My harness came with one build in - never had to use it so far, but tested it and it works very well.indigo_wolf - 21-12-2009 at 02:37 PM
7 inches?!?!
Do you remember which Gerber it is?
The Gerber H-Knife I am thinking of is under 5" and comes with a tension sheath with a clip.

SOG flash II assisted opening folder. I got a paracord pulltab on it ,so when I clip it inside the top of mypants pocket ,the tab is right there
waiting. In just a flash, it's open ready for use. Quik as a switchblade, but legal, cause you have to touch the blade to open it. I carry this
everyday.
If I got my pants on, I got my knife. Unless I just left court or the airport. LOL
though for some reason it didn't come with a sheath.
Actually give what the stock sheath looks like, it's not a great loss.
Are you looking to attach the hook knife to yourself, a harness or the buggy?

Yeah, good point about that rather flimsy looking sheath.
I was thinking it would make sense to have it on the bug. I already have a little 'trunk bag' on my PL folder. I could put the knife in there I
guess or else fashion some sort of easy to access sheath to attach to the frame of the bug.
At this point I don't wear a harness much yet when I am buggying...still so much about controlling the kite I have to learn before hooking in a strop.
However, once I do start wearing a harness I guess it would make the most sense to attach the knife to the harness somehow, eh?indigo_wolf - 21-12-2009 at 05:11 PM
Here's a possibility:
Here's your knife.
The first think I would consider doing is either braiding or shortening the paracord on the knife. Right now, it's 8"-9" looking for mischief.
Braiding it also makes it less floppy.
Finally I would consider adding a stopper ball (marine store) to the end of the cord.
As for a sheath, you might consider a very basic EMT first responder holster. They are available as holster only for $4-$5.
Something like this:
The come in a variety of sizes and one should fit your knife. The one in the picture can be mounted veritical or horizaontally.
In a horizontal mount, pull back the velcro on the sheath. Slide the knife in. Bring the paracord over the sheath, form an upside "U" and then trap
both the knife and the paracord with the velcro. At this point, the stopper ball should be draped down.
You should be able to pass you hand across the sheath, trap the stopper ball with your pinky and/or ring finger. Pulling on the stopper ball, this
will peel back the velcro that the paracord was trapped under ande extract the knife enough so that your middle and fore finger can grasp the
butt/handle of the knife. By the time the knife is fully extracted, your ring and pinky should fall into place.
This might require some practice and adjustment of the cord length, but soon you should be able to do it fast enough to scare the cat.

or check out how to braid paracord and make your own pull tab for your knife. http://www.ehow.com/how_5179088_braid-paracord.html
I have custom pull tabs on anything w/ a zipper.
If you don't want to make your own, people sell them on fleabay, just look up" knife lanyards"Kamikuza - 21-12-2009 at 06:14 PM
All of those are illegal in Japan ... the law changed recently but that's a long and very silly story. Basically, I'd better be VERY careful carrying
my Swiss Army knife on my person cos it may or may not be illegal :ticking:
My hook knives ... you might remember the shenanigans I went through to get the Dakine spreader bar pad that has the hook knife pocket 'built-in'?
That's the Dakine harness sorted and the OR Session2 comes with one built in ... when I get the Ozone XC harness I guess I have to figure something
else out ...WIllardTheGrey - 21-12-2009 at 07:11 PM
I like a smaller knife like the Mystic hook knife or a Benchmade modal 5. The Mystic knife doesn't come with a sheath but is about half the cost of
the Benchmade, however that molded hard sheath is very easy to attach just about anywhere.

Hmmm.... Just wondering why it is that harnesses geared for water seem to include a hook knife with greater frequency than those geared toward
land/snow.
Kinda fond of this one: Gerber Safety Hook Knife
Quick access one handed deployment
Designed for use with gloves
MOLLE compatible clip sheath & MALICE clip included
420HC Stainless Steel Blade
Rugged plastic injection molded sheath
Rugged plastic injection molded sheath
Double bevel blade edge
Lanyard hole / Glass breaker (apparently the latter is for when you lock yourself out of your car and lose patience )
Overall dimensions: 4 3/8” X 2”
Weight: 2.25 Oz.
Color: FG 504 or Black, Black Oxide blade
Small without being too small, and looks like it would be amenable to an inverted, vertical carry.
This is what I thought airin was referring to when she first said a Gerber Hook Knife
Any thought on the land/sea target market skewing?

Sam, good ideas for fashioning a sheath with a good grab via the stopper ball. I'll see what I can come up with given your suggestions.
thanks,

a large hunting knife on my leg "old school" Cabrinha Style. J/K.
most harness include a knife with a pocket, however when sit in the buggy there is no way to reach to for that hook knife from a Dakine Fusion (pocket
is on the rear)
i like where the Ocean Rodeo one is where you can reach to the side.
anywhere on the side of the harness is a good place.
