SNOWKITE EVENT TUG HILL NY (MLK WEEKEND)

crabnebula - 26-12-2009 at 02:35 PM

Hi Everybody!
Tug Hill, NY= tons of snow + the most smooth and consistant winds in the New England/New York areas! This year IKO rider assessments (get your cards!) are happening!
Also available, will be lessons from International Mountain Climbing School through the Chamber of Commerce....
and of course SICK riding with a nice organized and super friendly town with super friendly snowkiters from all over! Last year we had 4 feet of fresh powerder on day one, 2 feet of fresh powder day 2 and 3.....and winds were 15-25 mph the whole weekend!

power - 26-12-2009 at 05:41 PM

How far is tug hill from DC?

indigo_wolf - 26-12-2009 at 06:34 PM

450-500 miles depending on route.

power - 26-12-2009 at 06:41 PM

Probably can't make it. Too bad.

bobalooie57 - 26-12-2009 at 07:11 PM

Maybe some of your D.C. area riders will come up for the event. I hope to see ragden, snowbdr and any of the other nj crew up here ridin some fresh powder. Now, if I could only find some...Of course, I can't wait to see Zeb tear it up!

bigben91682 - 26-12-2009 at 07:14 PM

I'm trying to align some stars to get out there, looks like I may be able to pull it off....

Maven454 - 27-12-2009 at 06:10 AM

I'm hoping to head up there, though it's kinda dependent on getting the snow board off of snobdr first (or there, if he's coming).

bigben91682 - 27-12-2009 at 07:33 AM

Does anyone have some more specific information?

http://www.lewiscountyrecreation.com/kiteskiing.shtml still has last years info.....

what do hotels run in the area if you need to spend the night...?

ragden - 27-12-2009 at 09:36 AM

I will definitely be there. We are staying at a place in Pulaski called eddy's place. I have a number in my email I can post later. Rates are quite reasonable. There is also the Wigwam which has decent rates as well. Sunnie and I will headig up that Thursday night. I am pretty sure we will have room in the car for other folks in you need a ride. Just drop me a line. Snobdr will def be there. I think he already booked his room. I am praying I will have my binding situation figured by then.

Hope to see you there.

I believe the Lewis County site is the official page and will be the place to go for forms once they update the site.

However, Windzup/OzoneUSA has the 2010 dates posted (Sat, 01/16/2010 - 10:00am - Mon, 01/18/2010 - 4:00pm)

ATB,
Sam

bobalooie57 - 6-1-2010 at 07:59 AM

It looks like they've updated their site somewhat. The release forms still say 2009, I think you can edit in 2010, I'm trying to get official word. http://www.lewiscountyrecreation.com/kiteskiing.shtml
they're still stuck on kite skiing, not snow kiting.:puzzled:

cheezycheese - 7-1-2010 at 05:26 AM

Mike thanks for the info, but it looks like i'll be missing this one too....
But should be attending Kitestorm in Feb... i'm trying to get a board or pair of skis so i can get a lesson or two before hand:wee:

Missing it?!? Come on cheesy, you know you want to be there :D.

ragden - 7-1-2010 at 06:32 AM

Got my binding situation squared away last night. However, I will probably not make Kitestorm. I will be leaving that Sunday for Mt Tremblant. Its our yearly trip and it always lands on the same weekend as Kitestorm. Bummer. There is a VERY slim chance I might drive up Saturday for one day of Kitestorm, but I wouldnt count on it. Its like 3 hrs from where my buddy lives in Mass, and thats the day BEFORE we start an 8hr drive to Mt. Temblant... I bailed on doing that last year, we'll see what happens this year...

edit: ready to rock Tug Hill though...

bobalooie57 - 7-1-2010 at 06:41 AM

@ragden Drive up Sat. meet your bud at kitestorm, stay overnight in rudeboysaude's mountain stronghold right out on the lake(he put up the offer in another post)leave Sun. for Tremblant. L. Champlain posts a lot of speed records! You know about speed......bring gps, hang on for dear life!!!I wanted to go last year, still want to go this year, might even make it!:bigok:

ragden - 7-1-2010 at 06:44 AM

If anything, I would head out there Friday night, and then saturday drive back down to meet my bud in Mass. We normally all carpool from his place to Tremblant. Its him, his wife, and his wife's parents, plus another friend. We normally drive all day sunday going up to Tremblant and make a nice fun road trip of it. Then hit the slopes first thing monday morning. Might... Might go up to Kitestorm friday night.. we'll just have to see...

Cant wait for Tug Hill event. Do they have the fields selected for the "shack" setup and all that stuff yet? And I guess I still need to fill out the silly release forms... always forget about those.. *whistles innocently*

bobalooie57 - 7-1-2010 at 06:53 AM

I think main base will be at the Deer River Ranch again, but I'm just as up in the air as you! I've put in e-mails, called the office, etc. and I'm not getting a response. Jan asked me if I would give trainer flights, so I suspect I'll set up at Hanno's, but not even sure of that. He wants to have a snow-cross race somewhere in the Honeyville area, but I'm not sure if that is going to happen either. We just haven't been able to get together to discuss, and IDK what's up with the County. As soon as I know something, anything more, I'll be sure to post it up.

Thanks Bob. I was under the impression that the Deer Ranch was actually being used for something else this year, and that we werent allowed to fly there. I was hoping Honeyville area would have enough snow for us to ride there for the event. Those are some really nice fields, especially since there are three fields all close to eachother.

Let us know where to be... :) Thanks.

Frathouse - 7-1-2010 at 11:01 AM

Just put in to have Friday and Monday off work so I will be up there. Just got to find out if I'm rooming with Barnes or not at eddy's place. I would kind of like to stay at the wigwam and kite the pond though.

-Brad

bobalooie57 - 7-1-2010 at 11:05 AM

I got the impression from Jan that they were in for the event, but not for just any ol' weekend. However, they seemed quite friendly last year, and maybe private arrangements could be worked out? Just a guess. Wish I knew their favorite flavor...

barnes - 7-1-2010 at 08:50 PM

I'm trying to make it...classes are pretty awful already. If I can find someone to come up with me / give me a ride I can make it splitting gas money...I'll see though! :dunno:

Frathouse - 7-1-2010 at 09:04 PM

I can probably give you a ride if you want to leave thursday night

bobalooie57 - 8-1-2010 at 10:52 AM

I just got off the phone with the Chamber of Commerce, new posters are being made up as I'm typing this. I've talked with Jan, The trainer flights will be given at the new site in Honeyville. I guess HQ is sending up some Demos as well as some give-aways for our dinner-doorprizes, I got my co.to put up some stuff, not sure what yet, but it's cheese, so it's got to be good! Gonna go to local businesses this wkend to try to fatten the pot. I heard dinner Sat. night will be at Jeb's in Lowville again, this year will be off the menu, so not sure if they have a buffet, but their chef will be busy! IMHO they have great food there, but then I eat my own cooking! I hope there will be many kites over the hill that weekend, it's been snowing on and off for weeks now so we will have plenty of that, bring on the wind!

ragden - 8-1-2010 at 11:08 AM

Sounds great man! Cant wait!

bobalooie57 - 8-1-2010 at 11:12 AM

Oh, btw, Jan never even mentioned the ranch, and I forgot to ask, so you might be right, ragden, maybe they aren't playing this year! That would put most of the activities in Jefferson Co!:wow:

ragden - 8-1-2010 at 11:18 AM

No biggie. All those sites are right next to eachother, so it makes more sense to stay there anyways. We just need wind from the correct direction, and it will all be gravy. NW wasnt the best there, but a straight west, or South to West might be fine... Need to take another look at the northern field to see what wind direction is best there... We never did look at that one last weekend...

bobalooie57 - 10-1-2010 at 07:32 AM

Prediction is for snow every day this week, except Wednesday! Should be plenty of snow for the event!

bobalooie57 - 11-1-2010 at 08:00 AM

We got to discuss the upcoming event yesterday in the 'igloo' while on Chaumont Bay. I guess Zeb (crabnebula) is going to be there,, but Kelley probably not:sniff:, I think lessons will be available from Zeb, on a pre-arranged basis, contact info is available on the lewis co.website posted above. Also, they've updated their forms, registration will be easiest if you download the forms and have them filled out when you get here. I hope to see lots of you there. btw, everyone that saw the kitepanel made by rudeboysaude was mightily impressed, and were happy to hear that rbs had donated one to give away at our event! Thanks to rudeboysaude, and all others that have donated to make this event a success!

ragden - 13-1-2010 at 06:57 AM

Leaving tomorrow at noon. Cant wait!
Hows things lookin Bob?

bobalooie57 - 13-1-2010 at 07:24 AM

Supposed to be upper 20's-low30's for Fri-Sun. Possible snow today, Friday,&Sat. Winds looking kind of weak right now, +/- 10mph. Bring some with, please! Looking forward to seeing the crew!

bobalooie57 - 13-1-2010 at 10:02 AM

Winds for Sandy Pond look good on Friday, WSW-W at 15-17! I'll be setting up signs and maybe tents in the A.M. Might be able to get in an afternoon session, though.

I didnt think any south was good at Sandy Pond. If there is a lot of west in it, it might be okay. Might be better off on Oneida, north side, if its truly WSW.

The other thought I had is about the field north of where we flew in Honeyville last saturday. The field with the big hill, though I dont think it has good western exposure, might not be so good... Hard to say.. If there was more south, it might get good... The field we used might be decent on WSW though...

bobalooie57 - 13-1-2010 at 10:19 AM

WSW = 250-260 deg., should come in right off L. Ontario. Smmoooth!

Except for the trees along the edge of the lake... Guess it wont be too bad... Lets see if those predictions change between now and saturday...

Frathouse - 13-1-2010 at 11:57 AM

Should see you sometime tomorrow night at eddy's if I can get my job done at a reasonable hour and leave.

edit: Found it!

Maven454 - 13-1-2010 at 12:04 PM

I've got his number.

bobalooie57 - 13-1-2010 at 07:10 PM

It looks like Patrick Nedele will be at the event with the Ozone Ultimate Snowkite Ride, a custom fitted Mitsubishi Fuso. Can't wait to see him burn up some powder!

rudeboysaude - 13-1-2010 at 07:17 PM

Cool. Say hi to Patrick for me. Good guy. I can't believe he sold the Toyota. That Fuso must be awesome!

ragden - 14-1-2010 at 05:18 AM

Bob, just to confirm, is Sandy Pond being used as base camp on Saturday? Thanks.
Winds this weekend dont look great, though Sandy Pond looks to get the best wind for the weekend... Sunday may be a bust, but Monday looks decent. That will, of course, change as the days get closer... Thanks.

bobalooie57 - 14-1-2010 at 05:30 AM

Sandy Pond is not a base camp as far as I know, I just included that little piece of info, cuz I know you guys stay near there. Main base camp is still listed as the Deer Ranch, but registration is happening at the Honeyville site, too. Who knows, with lite winds on Sunday, the kiter cross race might be a shoe in for someone with a big, fast, light kite!:bigok:

ragden - 14-1-2010 at 05:34 AM

If predictions are accurate for tomorrow, I think I'll be on the pond... :)

bobalooie57 - 14-1-2010 at 05:46 AM

Where do you access Sandy Pond, anyway? I've never flown there.:(

ragden - 14-1-2010 at 05:51 AM

Go right to the WigWam. You'll need to inside for a parking pass (5 dollars), then you can walk down to the lake on the east side of the building. There is a nice little ramp all of the ice fishermen use. Only catch is not very good south exposure. Which could be an issue tomorrow. I've been told there is a north side launch, but I dont know where it is... I guess if we walk out far enough, we'll be fine.... Getting back could be a pain though. I'll have to ask around... For a pure west, it would be a fine place to launch...

bobalooie57 - 14-1-2010 at 06:05 AM

Cool! If we get done with the set-up early, and don't have the wind to fly up here, maybe we will call you to see about conditions on the pond. Does Jan have your cell# or do you have his? If you u2u me your cell# then I'll have it. I gave up my cell phone for lack of use!

ragden - 14-1-2010 at 06:06 AM

Sent.
Edit: If you guys have good winds out there, give me a call and we'll come fly there.... :)

bobalooie57 - 14-1-2010 at 06:09 AM

received and definitely will do! I'm getting psyched!

bigben91682 - 14-1-2010 at 05:02 PM

Bob, Saturday has fallen apart as far as getting up to Tug for me, but I am heading out to Oneida and/or Sandy pond tomorrow so maybe I'll see you (and others) out there.

bobalooie57 - 14-1-2010 at 06:12 PM

:singing: sure would be nice to meet you finally, we'll see what happens.

Frathouse - 14-1-2010 at 06:51 PM

Eddy's place fell through at least I have a room at the super 8. Should be up by noon tomorrow to test out my new Neo 2. You love it Bob it's green!!

ragden - 14-1-2010 at 07:36 PM

Heading to Oneida lake tomorrow. Gonna launch from the Sylvan Beach area. Hope to see ya there...

ragden - 15-1-2010 at 06:26 AM

Change of plans. Seeing rain on Oneida today, heading to honeyville instead.

bobalooie57 - 15-1-2010 at 04:01 PM

Well, I spent the day setting up a couple of tents for the event. Ozone's Mountain Stronghold(a lot of poles!)at the new Porterdale site, and Zebulon's own dome shaped tent at the corner of CR155, and State rte. 177. That site is where Zebulon will be giving lessons, the Porterdale site will be having the trainer flights, registration and probably the kitercross race on Sunday. Today's wind forecast was WSW at 5-10, and it came from the WSW alright, but it was more like 15 g-25! I watched Zebulon zoom all over the place, popping off airs whenever he felt like it. Also some of the DC crew were gettin some, ragden on his FS's most notably taking flight! Wind predictions are the same (5-10) for tomorrow, but those predictions are for the Watertown Airport, this is the Tug Hill where the snow usually accumulates 100+ inches a year and the wind always blows! I got to show a local reporter how to fly my 3.5M Imp 3-line trainer, (the wind had dropped off some by then) and when she was through she asked if I thought anyone would rent her some skiis when she comes back tomorrow! I could tell she had fun just flying, and I hated to tell her that she would most likely need more time on the kite, and also some skiing lessons before she would be ready for that. With the Mon. holiday, there's still plenty of time to get up here and jam with us on the hill!

bobalooie57 - 16-1-2010 at 05:31 AM

Wind today forecasted at 15-20 over L.Ontario, less inland. With the rise of the hill and the aspect of the lots in Honeyville, we should get at least 10-15 of that! Hope to see you here!

Jealousy..................................................................................

bobalooie57 - 17-1-2010 at 03:29 PM

What a couple of days! Although most of my time so far at this fest. has been showing people how to fly a trainer kite, I can't say I've ever had more fun! Just watching the look on someones face when they dip their trainer (2-3.5M) into the power zone, and feel the pull of the wind is enough to satisfy me for the past two days, then watching the different riders, from the pros to the newbies has been great. Today's wind was out of the SE which isn't the best for this area but the Hanno lot did the trick. I hope to actually get my 8M out tomorrow, if the wind is right! Here's some pics.

Great job Brad and everybody. Nice to see good press for the sport. Great pics of the Neo 2. I sent the clip off to HQ

bobalooie57 - 18-1-2010 at 02:25 PM

Wrap-up 1-18-09. We met at the Hanno lot, then moved to the snow-pals lot over on the Rector road. Wind was out of the SW, kinda goofy off and on, 0 - 15 or so. Not too many people there that I could maim or injure, so I launched my 8M, and got going again, mostly down wind, but with some cross wind motion. Tend to fall in most every lull, and tire way too easily, but each time out, I get a little farther back up wind, so progress is slow, but still progress. Then watched the pro's do it, but even they were hampered by the on-off winds. We then went to town for lunch, and to start discussing plans for next year... a pic from today, not the best conditions. This is Patrick Nedele, and Zebulon Jacub, Ozone.
