1 Buggy, 1 Kite, 1 Passenger = Top Speed

ripsessionkites - 7-1-2010 at 02:13 AM

not to get too technical but what are the clauses.

I've found my victim / , I mean passenger. ;-)

I assuming they must sit on a buggy with no extra modification like a rear seat.

1. do they have to sit on the rear axle?

2. can they sit on lap or inside seat (it will be tight)?

3. Was your passenger attached to the pilot or buggy so they wouldnt fall out backwards?

Ya this sounds like a really good idea? What a great way to promote safety in a sport that already has people frowning on our ""extreme sport"". Sounds like another way to give our sport a black eye!!!!

I have a "back porch" or rear deck on my buggy courtesy of Angus. It's a great place for passengers to ride if conditions allow. My boys ride there all the time when I'm confident that conditions make it prudent. I historically let them ride when I have lower winds and larger kites up and I'm not riding at the high end of the kites wind range. Basically, conditions that have removed almost all risk. I take care of my boys and would be quick to tell them "not right now" if it didn't feel right. Check out my avatar and the heading picture on the Coastal Wind Sports tutorial page. Neither is faster than the boys can just run up and jump on as I pass by.

With an adult back there a buggier could really hold down some power. I'm not sure how fast I'd have to be going to feel like I needed to be wearing a skirt though.

doublespeed360 - 7-1-2010 at 04:54 PM

kite guru realy whips his a round, no casualty so far .

kteguru - 8-1-2010 at 11:02 AM

True doublespeed, no one's died yet . Here's a vid with some tandem action http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IDO7fKNSBOw&feature=relat...
Let us know what kind of speed you get with your tandem Rip, I've gotten 48mph with the 15 y/o you see in the vid. Note: Everyone was wearing their helmets and seat belts:smilegrin:

bobalooie57 - 8-1-2010 at 11:09 AM

Thanks for that vid, kteguru, brings back memories of Wildwood!

cheezycheese - 8-1-2010 at 11:50 AM

I like the seatbelt idea. That keeps them seated if you have a surprise gust/toddler/wave etc.

I still say 400 lbs of riders could really hold down some power. I'm thinking 20 mph winds might get you in the 50s with the biggest phantom you could hold down. Skirts need not apply.

True Bob, I was only using a 4m Access the day I had a passenger and was really underpowered, it was ok when I was solo.....I should have put the 6m up I am quite sure we would have been nearer 60mph then....but it was just a spur of the moment madness that day, and I wanted some video footage......dangerouse dane was only too happy to oblige lol

popeyethewelder - 8-1-2010 at 01:28 PM

be carefull with seat belts...if it all goes Pete Tong, your passenger is trapped

popeyethewelder - 8-1-2010 at 01:29 PM

@Rip

no hard and fast rules.....1 kite 1 buggy 1 passenger.....put them where ever you like

kteguru - 8-1-2010 at 06:18 PM

@ BeamerBob
The extra weight doesn't really help that much in our buggies. With all the weight over the back axle on a flexifoil you get great grip on the back but nothing on the front making steering a bit interesting especially if heavily powered. I weigh 155lbs and have found that youngsters around 6-7 years are the best balast;-). Any more weight than that is just slowing you down.

Hmmm, so that's why Shawn is so popular when he comes with me. And I thought it was his charming smile ;)

kteguru - 8-1-2010 at 06:33 PM

Shawn and Charlotte, Pete's daughter are my favorite balast,,,,,,errrrr,,,,,, I mean youngsters:smilegrin:. Although I still think if you got Shawn a little buggy he'd be tearing it up out there on his own:o:smilegrin:

Bladerunner - 9-1-2010 at 10:19 AM

HEY Rip'

I am a willing victim ! We need think about how to seat / hold us both in an Apexx . Then anytime we are together and conditions are right I can throw on the pads and hold on for life ! :wee:
We need to get practiced for NABX ! :ninja:

ripsessionkites - 26-1-2010 at 07:24 AM

we are ready now:

ripsessionkites - 26-1-2010 at 08:05 AM

yah, thats Kitebuggy Mama, you'll notice I have my ipod on so i dont have to listen to the screaming or "slow down".

kteguru - 26-1-2010 at 01:36 PM

:o I hope no high speed ejections come from this

shehatesmyhobbies - 26-1-2010 at 03:09 PM

I have seen the guru in action! He took my Mom for a ride at WW. She still talks about it. She looks forward to the spring bash, as do I.

Rip, guru may be hard to beat! I have nicknamed him "buggy god". That man can ride!

rocfighter - 26-1-2010 at 03:57 PM

WOW this almost sounds like a challange! Is this a challange?
These threads sure do get fun

kteguru - 26-1-2010 at 10:24 PM

Hey SHMH, I'm looking forward to the spring buggy bash too. Lots of tandem action I'm sure  . I just hold on and go:smilegrin:. No challenge rocfighter, but,,,,,,,, if Rip and I could get together I'm thinking we could break 90 with 2 kites one buggy:wee: . A couple of lightweight guys, 2 small race kites and some nukin winds,,,,,90 baby 90. I wish I could have made NABX this year. Sadly I just won't be able to get the time to make it. Maybe 2011. Good luck with your tandem runs Rip. Keep us posted on how it goes.

kteguru - 27-1-2010 at 10:23 AM

I'll take the back :singing:. If I notice you holding back on the throttle though I'll have to take over the controls:lol:. We'll be gunning for the dust devils. Makes me want to make NABX this year. Oh well. I'm ready for some psycho tandem runs across the playa in 2011.

BeamerBob - 27-1-2010 at 12:27 PM

Pokitetrash and I tried this but the wind was sketchy and we were both using 7m Blurr's. The power wasn't consistent and routinely, I would power up in the back and the front kite wouldn't be pulling so my buggy would just slide over in a jackknife position. This might all work better with smoother more consistent winds and smaller kites that stay powered with some buggy speed. It could be quite alot of power with some shared wind resistance to allow for some top speed runs. If it went bad, it would be REALLY bad though.
EDIT: Just to be clear, I'm talking about a tandem with 2 kites.

doublespeed360 - 27-1-2010 at 06:23 PM

eli usa, and luk stanik had some great runs with 6meter jojos in2002 going 35 mph.what a great time that year

kteguru - 27-1-2010 at 10:29 PM

Your definately right Bob. It takes a bit to get used to working in sync with another pilot so you can get the most out it. I'm not sure if you pick up any efficiency with 2 kites 2 buggies,,,,,,, it seems it would be the same as 1 kite 1 buggy :dunno: maybe some of the other guys can comment on it. I did try 2 kites 1 buggy this past summer with Buggydanny and we seemed to go on average 2mph faster than what we were doing seperately. It's an interesting experience when the back end of your buggy is breaking loose and your not the one doing it:o. Definately a barrel of laughs:lol:

WELDNGOD - 1-2-2010 at 04:43 PM

I'll have my newest tandem trailer w/ me at WW . I'm still painting it so I got no pics yet.:ninja:

I'm thinking that the faster you go, the big hindrance to acceleration is wind drag on the buggy and pilot. The rear flyer is slipping through the (apparent) wind behind the front pilot but still has the added power of his kite. Possibly a gain there IMHO.

kteguru - 1-2-2010 at 10:04 PM

Could be Bob. I wonder if anyone has gotten some measurements on this? The efficiency with 2 kites one buggy seemed pretty clear after we tried it. I'm assuming most of the benefit comes from the weight savings of not having the second 40+ lb buggy. All you guys going to NABX should convince Ozzy and friends to get a buggy train up into the 60's and beyond:smilegrin:

WELDNGOD - 4-2-2010 at 03:32 PM

it's all Dutch to me, like chinese arithmatic. ( no offense Rip)

kteguru - 4-2-2010 at 10:12 PM

I don't know what they said but that side car rig looked #@%$#!in:evil:.

WELDNGOD - 14-2-2010 at 04:20 PM

I'm about done testing this rig now ,works great. And I'm not so sure you can go any faster w/ two bugs and two kites . But you will get up to speed much quicker. Me and my bro have been workin on tandem w/ 2 kites.

I still need to get those blingin rims and some big foots for it ,then it will be proper.
I still haven't shown pics of all the parts. I made long and short siderails and 3 different axle lengths . So I can make it a longer race buggy w/ wide alxes or shorter siderails and narrow axle width like a freestyle buggy. Also have 2 sets of forks ,1 for bigfoot tires and 1 for barrows tires. Axles are also interchangeable w/ trailer ,so it can be wide or narrow.

I will bring all the parts to WW this spring, as I know some of you want to see my worx.
