MA / NH Snow Kiters

B-Roc - 7-1-2010 at 03:13 PM

The winds in Northern MA look good for this weekend. My kids have their first ski lesson on Saturday morning but I should be home by 1:30.

Anyone looking to get out on any of the lakes / ponds?

I saw two people skating on an inlet to the Charles River in Waltham today so I'm thinking Mascuppic must be frozen though I haven't been over to check it out yet.

Snow cover on the pond in my backyard looks decent but no snowmobiles have been out on it yet and I haven't had the time to go drill test holes.

Hoping to get out for the first snow session this weekend :wee:

Paul, let me know what time you are going out on Saturday and I will join you if I can. Are you setting up at the church / playground side of the lake or just off of 129 or at the companies?

I was out on lake Q last Sunday. Super gusty wind, but nice snow. Will be there with Paul and Dean Saturday. Try to be there noon (ish). Sounds like a NW 10-15mph day. Last winter we usually parked at Comverse - good for W winds. But maybe we should try out the church side? It is always good to go upwind first - and back downwind if you are tired

Hope to see you all
Jens

Anyone going out tomorrow (Sunday)? I spent most of the day with the kids downhill skiing and never made it out with the kite. Winds look to be a bit on the light side but I will likely be at Mascuppic around 10am if anyone is interested, or if you're going to lake Q, let me know and maybe I'll head that way.

I rode at Mascuppic for about 3 hours. Started on my 6m Bego and after about 30 minutes the winds totally died so I started to pack up and then the winds built some allowing me to move up to my 10m Eskimo which was a treat. 90% of the surface has great cover but there are some bald icey spots here and there. Very little snowmobile traffic this morning and no one ice fishing. There were remains of campfires littering the lake here and there and one spot had a bunch of boards only partially burned but now frozen into the ice with nails in them - that's a sail killer.

Ice was about 7" thick. With the temps we're expecting this week, Mascuppic should continue to be good and improve with any new storms that may come.

I meant to try to break the board out of the ice but it was a good hike from where I set up and by the time I packed up I forgot all about it.

Looks like it was maybe a pallet or a box of some kind because the nail heads are all in a row and stick out an inch or more. It would trash your gear in a hurry if you dropped your kite or lines into that mess.

If any one goes to Mascuppic and you enter the lake from the public boat launch side, it is in the middle of the lake on the left, near the houses, in the pile of remains from what looked like a good size campfire. Its about as far left as I like to ski when the wind is blowing across that direction. If I get out next week, and its not all burned up, I'll try to bust it out and drag it away.

You guys should check out the yahoo iceboat and ice report
groups. You will find sites that have had someone actually check them out.
