Buggy crashes and rollerovers?

Feyd - 8-1-2010 at 01:25 PM

Hi all,

I don't ride buggies, I have no where to ride buggies, I've only seen one in my life.

But I'm curious about the none the less.

A question that comes to mind is how often do you crash on the buggy?

And how many of those crashes are rollovers?

Seems really sketch to me from a crash standpoint. But again I've never ridden one or seen a crash.

Thanks!

I have OBEs every now and then, flipped at speed a few times. Still isn't as bad as wiping out on a landboard at speed though. It has alot to do w/ how aggressive you fly /ride.

dylanj423 - 8-1-2010 at 02:01 PM

crashing is part of the fun... as long as your not going too fast anyways... i onlly crash when i am turning, or trying to avoid another buggier

landboard crashes are def. more painful

geokite - 8-1-2010 at 02:07 PM

Since getting a large, modern buggy, I haven't flipped once. The larger buggies slide out much easier, allowing you to scrub speed. When over powered, I just keep the kite low and slide. But you still have to be careful with the kite to keep from being ejected.

BeamerBob - 8-1-2010 at 02:11 PM

I've only turned over at very slow speeds and get bound up with the kite coming at just the right angle that is perpendicular to a line from the front axle to the rear wheel on the kite side. Always while slow maneuvering in sharp turns. And once where I made a sharp turn with too low pressure in my tires on Jekyll and it bit instead of sliding. The wide axles really help keep you "wheels down". At speed, Geo is right. You can just slide away your speed and not worry much about catching a wheel.

I've got a PL folding buggy. It's definitely easier to flip than the larger buggies, but I'd still rather crash it than a land board.

I have a larger buggy and have not crashed yet but I have flipped it 3 times, at low speeds, glad to have a role bar. I did break 2 ribs on the side-rail being pulled sideways in a nice gust. In my little buggy flips all the time, still no crashes.:bigok:

heliboy50 - 8-1-2010 at 04:43 PM

Never flipped (but then again my personal speed record is probably attainable by most earth worms,) but OBE'd 3 times. 2 whilst turning with a kind of sensitive kite and one just getting rolling and brought the kite right into the center of the window a little too hot.

Come down and join the rest of us at Nahant Feyd. Your always welcome to have a go on any of our buggies if you'd like. Of course thats only if we can have a go on a charger

B-Roc - 8-1-2010 at 06:15 PM

Don't ride with kteguru. He's simply seeking passengers for extra ballast so he can go faster and turn even quicker than he normally does :shocked2:

kteguru - 8-1-2010 at 06:24 PM

Hmmmm, so when is B-roc jr. going to be joining us next:smilegrin:. As I recall he had lots of fun on the back of the ol' Flexi:thumbup:

B-Roc - 8-1-2010 at 06:29 PM

B-Roc Jr. says riding like you is like being on the roller coaster at canobie lake park. He loves your "deep turns" but he doesn't like the beach in the cold. He'll be making his next kiting appearance behind me on a saucer sled REAL soon! :wee:

DAKITEZ - 8-1-2010 at 10:24 PM

The ol saying ... if your not crashing your not riding hard enough

sounds like a injury thread

OBEs are most common. that also normally happens when you position the kite in the wrong place or try going from 30+ to zero in seconds. Most common is being overpowered too.

Flipping over happens too, but you can counter balance this with longer side frames / rear axles and weight. Even than with weights its still possible (Arie flipped a XXtreme ApeXX max weight using a Proto RII 2.2). But if you're going over in a smaller buggy you can control your front wheel and cause a two wheel trick instead. When you're going at speed, most people like to slide their front wheel, than drift the rear (based on a well balanced buggy).

Crashing is open to discussion ... if you have open space and no objects around you're pretty safe. Ive crashed into other buggiers rear axles before for FUN.
If you have a small area just we do, I've taken out my pinky toe, my left shin on a park bench at 20km.

other issues have be equipment, that have lend to injury.

doublespeed360 - 9-1-2010 at 06:51 AM

feyd with your experience you would ok ,crash and learn,"bob childs'".just take it slow but i dont think if you can do that with the speed you get on you skis.

Here'sa short vid. on how quick it can happen. Flying a 2M BeamerIV in wind gusting to 25mph. On asphalt runway, PL Comp Std Buggy. http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual...

OBE = Out of Buggy Experience.
Here's a couple of my OBE's where I was caught on vid.

A Day in the Life - OBE is 4mins 25 secs into that vid,

Kite buggy 2008 OBE - Same OBE shown twice, one from my buddy who was videoing & the other from my buggy mounted cam. If you hate the music like everyone I know, blame my Swiss blood.

Kite Buggy - Flying Sand-Yeti - OBE is 2mins & 32 secs into that vid.

I don't have OBE's very often about 3 or 4 a year now.
Most of my OBE's occur in the sand dunes and sometimes the buggy finishes upside down.

I have had my share of OBE's as well but a lot of the time I think the cause is undue care and attention.
It usually happens late into my session when I am tired and start making stupid mistakes.

Feyd - 14-1-2010 at 12:04 PM

Hey!

Thanks for all the responses. I almost forgot I posted my question (I'm not in the buggy end of the forum very often) and just checked it.

It definately piques my intrest even more. Might have to look into this buggy thing a little deeper.

It looks like wicked fun. I usually ride bikes in the summer months but I can't do that these days so I'm looking for an alternative. I'm hoping to learn to ride water this summer and maybe get a few shots in on a buggy.

Good info for sure. (took me a while to figure out OBE) I'll definately be reading up some more and if I get down to Nahant and run into Kteguru you can sure as heck fly one of my Chargers.
