I am such a dumass. Oh well maybe I'll have learned my lesson this time about the benefts of aborting a run instead of trying to ride it out when I
get too close to obstacles.
Sooo...
I was boarding at Russell Creek park in dallas, where I had met up with Akulakat. I was test driving his synergy. There was a paved park road (no
traffic) at the downwind end of the field. So I wasnt giving it the proper respect and let myself get too close to the road. Wind started pulling me
towards the road and I tried to edge against and lean back but my edge caught on the curb causing me to get whipped over the top of the board really
fast. I tumbled into the street and out of reflex put out my left hand catching all the force in that wrist.
They had to put me out for ~10 mins at the hospital while the dr reset my wrist. At least i got some morphine this time cuz it hurt more than the last
time i broke it only 4 months ago. Broke in a slightly diff place this time, and the break was a bit worse. Gonna need surgery again. Deja Vu. I gotta
learn every thing the hard way. Oh well. Im sure I'll be back out kiting again in a couple months. Maybe I'll be less wreckless in the future.
On the plus side I finally got to meet Mike (Akulakat), and hes a really nice guy. Hope to fly w/ u again sometime soon, Mike bobalooie57 - 19-2-2010 at 09:57 PM
So sorry to hear that. I guess that means you'll pass on the Radical? Well, take care, and heal well! BobHouston AirHead - 19-2-2010 at 09:58 PM

Wow - should get that wrist replaced with silly putty. Take care man, and don't sell your kites.BigMikesKites - 19-2-2010 at 10:18 PM
It was great to meet you. You were riding the board very well and your brother in law was commenting on a couple jumps you made. :singing:
You have me rethinking the unused landboard I have here. I really don't think I'll get on it myself, but use it to show people what one is like. I
definitely could have gotten a cheaper one for show. :puzzled:
Definitely don't get rid of the kites. You have the passion for it for sure. I'd curtail the landboard a bit, maybe sit closer to the ground.
Maybe some more padding. I am glad you had your helmet and knee pads on. I couldn't tell if you hit your head on the tumble or not, but that close
to the street one whack would not have been good.
I'm not sure how long a wrist takes to heal, but I hope it isn't a long time.Drewculous - 19-2-2010 at 11:54 PM

Aw dude that blows
... and now you've got me all worried! First time I went out (after breaking
mine and having surgery) with the Kitewing I was using my old wrist wraps from skating ... but I didn't last night and the night before on the kite
with the board and now got me thinking I should again sp4cem0nkey - 20-2-2010 at 06:52 AM
Yah, bob, I'll be passing on the Radical.
My non-kiter friends have been suggesting I quit. Theres no way. I've had more fun kiteboarding than w/ any other sport in my life! Really my
problem is that I never learned how to fall properly I think. That and the fact that atb's can slam u down hard if they catch an edge on something.
I really have to learn all my lessons the hard way, cuz im stubborn some times.
Lesson 1: Be aware of hazards in your surroundings.
Lesson 2: It is better to take the time to walk away from a nearby hazard than to risk getting blown into it.
Lesson 3: Patience!bobalooie57 - 20-2-2010 at 07:28 AM
Well, that's too bad on the pass, the Radical is a sweet kite, good news is Big Earl is just in AZ, so chances are you could still get a shot when
you've healed up. With lots of practice falling, pulling in all the appendages and tucking down have become second nature, but it is the unexpected
that always gets ya! Hopes for a speedy recovery. Bjeech - 20-2-2010 at 08:46 AM
Hey Gem, Mike told me about your spill last night when we were emailing back and forth. Sorry to hear about it. Glad to hear you aren't giving up on
kiting after falling off the horse a couple of times though. I just got my Twister from Mike, so once you heal up we'll have to fly together.erratic winds - 20-2-2010 at 09:56 AM
Heal well, don't rely on the pills too much or you'll miss them when they're gone.
I can't seem to find the ones I have online, but I often wear rollerblade wrist guards as hand/wrist protection. The model I have are the very old
ones with leather full gloves(half fingers), studded palm, and reinforced top of the wrist(not underneath). They do not interfere with my grip enough
to make bar control a problem.
Really glad to see you don't let a bit of injury keep your spirits down for the sport, best of luck to ya.acampbell - 20-2-2010 at 11:59 AM
Ouch, those hurt. I took a header off some stairs years back on Rollerblades and even with full wrist guards, it took over a year to feel right
again. Glad you appear undaunted but take it easy and heal fast.Houston AirHead - 20-2-2010 at 04:21 PM
one good thing about injuries ive found is it makes you a million times more aware and safe the next time.
i also forgot to say dont sell your kites!WIllardTheGrey - 21-2-2010 at 01:14 AM

Something good to know especially if you want to do any static jumping, a PLF is harder to do on an ATB but will decrease the impact some-what.
A while back there was a video posted in here of a practice session that was really good, I'll see if I can find it. Found it.

We used to jump stairs ... looking back now, we were probably dropping in 3-4 meters on the big ones :ticking: no wonder my back is a mess pigryder - 21-2-2010 at 06:05 AM

Maybe some marshal arts training to learn the falling thing better. Every one had good ideas though.
Here in CT we have this lottery ticket called Win For Life and the adds for it have this guy in a suit of armour so he won't get hurt so he'll live
longer. Maybe you should try that.
But seriously good luck with your recovery. And look into buggying!PHREERIDER - 22-2-2010 at 07:22 AM

glad your gonna be ok
be glad no one else was injured.
trekking away is a hard sell. with quick and solid skills its always tempting to jump on quick. a 10min. walk is your effort in the public's
passive safety.
