Peter lynn buggies

powerkiter82 - 2-3-2010 at 10:14 AM

I am thinking about purchasing a buggy in the future and need help deciding which would be a better choice. Should I go with the PL comp ST or the comp XR+? I only intend to do light riding on grass/ sand, no freestyle, and I am 6' 2" tall and weigh around 280 lbs. Also, I am on a tight budget. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

acampbell - 2-3-2010 at 10:32 AM

Ruts, holes etc. can be just as tough on frames as freestyle riding. Go with the XR+ if you can. You might be tight in either. BeamerBob here on the forum is almost your size and described getting in the XR+ as "like crawling into my washing machine". He ended up with a Flexifoil wide back end and a Peter Lynn Bigfoot front end. You could do the same with standard tires for about $750. Flexifoil has like two wide back axles left last I checked and then that will be it for them, I think.

DAKITEZ - 2-3-2010 at 10:41 AM

definitely the xr+ at your size and as Angus said it probably will be tight. I definitely recommend the extended down tube for your height.

popeyethewelder - 2-3-2010 at 01:00 PM

XR...no contest, and get a back rest made up for it...

BeamerBob - 2-3-2010 at 02:05 PM

No offense, but you just aren't going to fit in a PL. I have a 36" waist and I'm just over 6'4" 225 lbs and I rub both side rails when I sit down in a comp xr+. The Flexi has a seat that you sit "on" more than "in", so it would offer more room for you. I am extremely happy with my hybrid buggy with it's wider than PL rear axle, wider side rails that give more hip room and allow use of thick pool noodles for padding. To top it all off, I use the PL seat which makes more of a #@%$#!pit that is very secure. You could maybe go this route with thinner padding. I just recently added another combination with my buggy by adding the comp XR+ small front fork for using small tires on smooth grass and Ivanpah dry lake. I keep the kinked downtube for a lower front seat position. By changing tires and/or front forks, I can adapt to any conditions now. Angus can piece the whole thing together for you with one stop shopping. He guided me right through the process. He has sold, owned and ridden both buggies extensively so he knows his way around the parts catalogs. Welcome to the addiction.

EDIT: Popeye is right about the backrest too. I added one to mine and that completed the package. Lots of bracing to wedge myself into the buggy with offering more stability and riding comfort.

I highly recommend the XR+ over the Comp St. The XR+ has thicker wall tubing throughout the entire buggy and comes with the 20mm rear axle bolts and bearings - which will last 100 times longer and are 100 times stronger than the Comp St - especially with the heavier riders. If you are on a budget, this would be your best option as you won't be needing to replace rear axle bolts, bearings or side rails/rear axles. With the thicker walled tubing you also get much stronger welds and less metal fatigue. Even riding in grassy fields this makes a huge difference in durability.

I'm about your weight and a little shorter. I like my buggy very much and you are close enough, that you are welcome to come down and give a XR+ a test run sometime. I always look for excuses to ride.

There are other choices. Especially for a large pilot!

Take a look! Never know, might be worth the extra expense.

Thanks for all the advice everyone.

I'm 6'3" 255 and prefer the Flexi, Pl's just to light a frame for me.

As of today I am the proud new owner of a Peter Lynn Comp XR+ buggy. I can't wait until I get to try it out. Thanks, Mike from Big Mikes Kites. He is a great guy to deal with and I would recommend that anyone that needs something, to get in touch with him.

Welcome to the league of loon. Buggying is a blast. Maybe one of these days I'll get half as good as some of the folks I see on here!!

Scudley - 21-3-2010 at 07:57 AM

You have 60lb. on me. I would suggest you keep an eye on the welds around the lower fork brace. My fork crapped out in less than one year: Cracks in the fused part of the weld; micro-cracks/tears in the fork tubes themselves; crack at the hole where the steering head bolt passes through the lower fork brace. I know of at least one other fork with this problem. Another friend much lighter than either of us who cracks in the rear axle and and in the side rails near the junction with the rear axle.
Our local Peter Lynn dealer refused to consider any of these warranty issues even though the ads say the comp xr+ will last for a life time and is designed for tricks.
Perhaps it will last you a lifetime, if your doctor has given you less than 12 months to live. ;)

guess this is refer to RSKB.

where does it state that: http://ripsessionkiteboarding.com/peter-lynn-competition-xr....

or here: http://www.peterlynnproducts.com/

shall I go now with links...

you forget to mention that our park hows huge pot holes which puts strain on the joints. even the first buggy i had made by PL from NZ had the weld weaken from the footpeg.
ive seen 10 year old buggies still in factory condition because they ride them of smooth, grass, beach surface.

PL are beginner / advanced buggies, not FULL RACE MACHINES. its for the rec rider not the Freestyler. If you want to JUMP any buggy you're going to have to reinforce it. that goes for any buggy PL / Flexi / Libre / Ozone.

most PRO riders arent on PL, they ride Xxtreme / Libre / PTW / Sysmic / BBS

i dont consider that a warranty issue???

maybe you should contact me first before you talk. if i didnt help you're more than welcome to send your warranty issue to PL.

there are a lot of options for buggies, pick one that feels comfortable and fits your wallet.

END RANT.

Scudley - 21-3-2010 at 12:14 PM

I did talk to you first. Anybody call replacement at list price warranty.

Maven454 - 21-3-2010 at 12:27 PM

Okay.

1) This conversation should probably happen in private.
2) Rip: On the PL site it does says that "The Competition XR+ has extra thick tubes that will last a lifetime." and that "The center of gravity is nicely balanced and combined with the durability it's excellent for doing tricks."
3) Scudley: What does "Anybody call replacement at list price warranty." even mean?

I trust the quality of the Peter lynn buggies, after all he is one of the main forefathers of the kite buggy as we know it today. It looks like a good high quality design, besides their sales would not be where they are today if they were not of good quality.

rocfighter - 21-3-2010 at 04:34 PM

I'm glad you got what you wanted. Best of luck with it for a long time.

You should be happy with your new bug... Yes there are others that are better but that comes with more $$$.

I have been riding for 2 seasons in the same bumpy park as Scudley and Rip and I have not had problems with mine yet.

I may end up with cracks but I do check out the frame/fork. If it happens, I'm sure a new one for $75 or so won't kill me.

Now go ride that thing:spin:

fair enough, yes i would agree the tubing will last a lifetime, but NO ONE said welds would. when certain words are omitted from the statement it sounds different than actual.

this forum isnt my Customer Service desk, just so you know thats what the Can Dist. and Peter Lynn (himself) offer me.
and it doesnt help matters when you call Kitebuggy Mama a B....

Funniest thing I have read in years. The tubing will last for years, but the welds won't.

The Libre Special I bought second hand from John 6 months before I bought PL from rip has lasted my girl friend brilliantly. The fork design is way more solid than PL's. It even stands up to the incredible rigors that Garry Point throws at it.
John will the Sprinter seat fit on my old Special?
