The 13th Beach Gang rides again

John Holgate - 2-3-2010 at 01:48 PM

It was an Ozone lineup on the beach this time. winds started off around 20 knots then dropped to 15 then an hour later, picked up to 30 knots. Pretty gusty too. The 3m Flow handled it all pretty well. Spartan and OBEwan changed down to a 4m Access XC and 2m PKD when the wind really started howling. By that stage, the GoPro was full! I managed a new pb of 57.5km/hr with the 3m. I was changing camera positions every lap of the beach (3 miles) and then tried to edit 60 odd clips together to make it look like I had multiple cameras on board. A time consuming and difficult editing procedure and one I was not terribly successful at. I have a new respect for video editor people! Grab a coffee and enjoy.

Good job with the gopro.

Nice to see the turbo bar in action.

Willard I think you need a shave

Hey Jon I just watched the whole video, Maybe it's just me but I think that was a great video. You did seem to have a lot of angles and it all flowed realy well.

Kudos John, always enjoy your vids :thumbup:

I noticed you're hooked into a SB and not your usual D-rings. Any particular reason or preference these days?

thanks rocfighter.

BHG - I bought a Dakine speed seat (my tree surgeons harness's bum strap can sometimes work it's way too far up or down). I hadn't used a spreader bar before and I really like the hook idea. the speed seat spreads the load out really well too - no pressure points. the plastic cam-loc buckle was pox, so I unpicked it and did the same sort of arrangement as on an Ozone SB harness. (plastic buckles either side ((the spreader bar doesn't slide now)) Much better. I've got the Ozone harness too - it's much stronger and feels more trustworthy but it's not as comfy as the speed seat. I think that the 3m Flow might be a better kite than I give it credit too. Over 2miles, I lost about 100 yards on Spartan who had a 4m Access XC up in 25 knots or so. It behaves really well in gusty conditions (when I'm not dragging it along the beach!!) and it seems to sit well forward with very little side pull. It needs to be moving fast to get some pull out of it. On the first run, I did 56km/hr and OBEwan with the 6m Access XC did a 57 or 58km/hr. So it wasn't too far behind, although I certainly dropped back fast when the wind dropped off a bit. Couldn't get near the Manta 8m - that WAS quick. Makes me want to try the 4m Flow.

Thanks John for the harness feedback
Hope you get a chance to fly a 4m Flow and Look forward to your review/feedback.

John...that video is just sick man.....what a lovely place and good company too ehh, the quality from the gopro units is marvelous, I love watching your videos, and I know what you mean about video editing, blending in the different angles...it all takes time but worth it for the final result...

The hardest part is deciding what parts to keep and what parts to cut out, its very easy to many a video too long, and thats a mistake I ofter do....about 3-4 minutes is usually plenty long enough......but its so dam hard cutting decent footage out ehh, as soon as I can afford one I will for sure be buying one of those GOPro Cams

Thanks Carlos, down at Sandy Point at the moment hoping the wind is right for some more video on one of the best oz beaches. BTW, had a close up look at JD's Dominator. Wow, what a piece of engineering. I dips me lid!

Cheers

John

i also think ya did some great film/ edit work
not a criticism but a possible improvement on quality could come from finding a way to add some suspension to your gopro mounting pole. the waveyness would all but go away if your gopro did not get hit so hard. not quite sure how you would do it, but if done would be a great improvement.

btw where is 13th beach?

John Holgate - 10-3-2010 at 07:10 PM

13th Beach is 20 minutes south of Geelong (Vic/Aus).

I will see if I can come up with a way to stabilize that camera a bit more. Perhaps I should run bigfoots!!
