Kiting - “What’s the point of it?”

dtoast - 10-3-2010 at 08:20 PM

I apologize in advance for it being so long, but what a great day. Went up to my girlfriends parents this past weekend specifically to get some good kiting in. With about two feet of snow on the ground I strapped my snowboard to the Flysurfer bag, which held my snowboard on very well. Next I had felt like I had just gotten a sponsorship because we loaded up the snowmobiles and headed out to the field with all my equipment attached to my back.

Winds were reaching 20mph gust sustained probably at 15. This being my first time out in good winds ever with a depower kite and my new Outlaw I was not yet used to pulling some jumps, nor have I really ever pulled one off. I was speeding back and forth across the top edge of the hill, and then next thing I know I was headed for the only pile of rocks on the hill, Murphy’s Law kicking in of course. Evidently I reacted and pulled in the bar, and all of a sudden I was floating up in the air like the big MT snow kiting videos. I slowly drifted down the hill with about 15 seconds of hang time; by the time I touched down I was about 200 yards down the hill from where I started. After putting my heart back into place, I put the kite into figure 8’s and climbed back up the hill and just fell over with the biggest grin on my face. I turned to my girlfriend and asked if she had gotten any of that on camera, and her reply to me was O' I forgot.

By the end of the day when I looked down at the lake there were about 15 people just hanging out watching me as they were ice fishing. As we snowmobiled by them on the way home one of them just had to ask one of those kiting questions…”what’s the point of that?” All I could think of in my head was this silly icon :wee:

Great story man!!! That jump must have been surreal. I've yet to make it out with the scorp in some good jumping winds, can't believe that guy would ask such a question though. I'd be like didn't you just watch me all day to see me getting the ride of my life lol. Good Times:wee:

That story FTW!

What's the point of ice fishing FFS when you can go to the supermarket and take 5 minutes to buy a lump of dead fish.

Good story... when I saw the title I thought I might post 'you're fired' :D

Thanks, it will be a memorable one. I left out all the wipeouts and time I spent on my butt...have not gotten the transitions down very well either. Which is probably what those guys were watching more of. Had some hard wipeouts, thank goodness for snow.

Really, it's kind of one of the "if you have to ask, you'll never understand" sort of things, though I hate to actually say that.

 AWESOME

i think why we get such a "high" off flying a kite, because it really symbolizes how humans are not meant to fly, but choose to any ways. ?

yeah we have planes, helicopters, gliders ect...

but are WE actually flying,?

build a machine that allows US to fly, thats the mission:thumbup:

dtoast - 15-3-2010 at 12:53 PM

In the defense of the ice fishermen, the guys were fairly old. Maybe jumped out of a few planes, but had probably never seen a kite that size before and did not understand what the actual purpose of the kite was for, i.e. flying up in the air or body skimming across the snow:smilegrin:

In the end I told them to check out You Tube.

Hijack my own thread here…Is it sad that I pop onto this page at work to look at my photos and just think how nice of a day that was…while it is raining out my office window and emails keep popping up that I don’t want to respond to. Anyone else find themselves using PKF to day dream?
