Hey everyone,
I have some helmet cam footage from a Go Pro HD but can't edit it in either Sony Vegas or Adobe Premier Pro 8.
MPEG 4
Any thoughts besides converting it?
Thanks!
Kamikuza - 12-3-2010 at 06:09 PM
Windows Live Movie Maker. Pretty limited though ...
Surprised neither of those work! I'm going to try Cyberlink Director ...

pinacle is a good low(er) cost package. Why can't you edit in premier? the video is Mpeg4/h.264, pretty standard...
Feyd - 12-3-2010 at 07:12 PM
Aparently the since the Premier is a "Professional" level editing suite they didn't enable it to edit MPEG 4.
Apparently MPEG 4 quality wasn't intended for high level editting. As long as you leave the file intact the quality is awesome but if you start
taking it apart it loses quality.

Feyd,
Good to hear ya got a gopro. Now we got some vids to go with your blog adventures, way cool.
I like kamikuza use windows live movie maker on windows 7, downloadable free, and as far as i am concerned (read non pro editor) i don't see any
quality loss at all. So far all ive shot is 720p at 60fps.

here is a non edited straight convert and upload make sure ya set it to 720p not any action just a sample of how it turns out.

I've been using Imovie, and it's a dream come true . However, for my PC I use MAGIX Movie Edit Pro 15 Plus, cause it handles MPEG 4 just fine.

The one thing I want Live MM to do is 1/2 speed and maybe zoom. Ok two things.
I've searched and people are talking about plug-ins, but haven't found any yet
Cyberlink Director takes the GoPro HD files no problem ... but too many bells and whistles for my tastes though.
LOL at highazakite's camergirl
highazakite - 13-3-2010 at 09:58 AM
Not to hijack but yea if you find a way to do slow motion in windows movie maker tell me. (or another free non pirated program) And yea cam girl got
tossed the gopro and told to try it out. She is pure comedy.

MP4cam2avi is the software of the day ... wraps the H.264 HD .mp4 up in an .avi wrapper that anything can read. It's freeware too IIRC and fast!
Then you can edit in any software that supports .avi. Tested with Windows Movie Maker 2.6 (got the slow mo!) and VDub ...!

I use CyberLink PowerDirector 8. It can do anything I ask (including output MP4 portable format for my PSP.) Love it, and it's like WMM on crack.
Easy enough for a dummy like me to learn.

I've been using pinnacle. Lots of feature for a small price.
ripsessionkites - 6-7-2010 at 12:45 AM
Buy a Mac - final cut pro or iMovie.
You have to convert the files first for pc if I remember corectly.
Kamikuza - 6-7-2010 at 05:28 PM
Why would a Mac be any better :puzzled: only one button on the mouse must make the computer run faster with more geebee's on the wide-fly
highazakite - 6-7-2010 at 05:35 PM
lol buy a mac. hahah
i found sony vegas pro 9 does an excellent job editing gopro hd files and does not need a mac or any converting before hand.
ripsessionkites - 7-7-2010 at 01:07 AM

Had a play with Vegas last night ... blah.
Here's the problem ... wanted to edit with Deshaker for the line mount video ...
Have to use VDub but that won't open the original .mp4 file.
Convert file to .avi with mp4cam2avi
Vdub decides there's no audio so disables it - output has no audio track. But the video is pretty good.
Open the small .mp4 in Vegas and spend a couple hours just figuring out how to use it.
Reboot PC several times cos Vegas is trying to edit a 4Gb file and is creating about 100Gb of temp files :o
Get a trimmed file into Vegas and run Deshaker.
Output is pretty bad, worse than the original test. And it's only done the first segment!
What a joke.
WLMM is sweet for the basic cropping and titles I want to do. But likes to fool with the aspect ratio
Deshaker would work fine if VDub would take the output from WLMM.
Vegas rotates and translates the video real nice although it's a lot of work manually inserting key frames and rotating. And it insists on temp files
that slow everything down to a crawl.
No one piece of software does it right or easily ... this is why I stopped trying to make my own SVCDs etc ...!!! :flaming:
Ideal workflow would be ...
Edit the segments in WLMM. Deshake them. Correct rotation. Add titles and publish.
Bah.

Im with you ripsession....Macs rule!
All hail the MAC user!! Yeah and IMovie rocks too...:o
highazakite - 8-7-2010 at 12:39 PM
@kami
vegas took a bit of learning for me to get everything right ill agree, its meant to do a lot of different stuff so its got about a bazillion output
options, i did however do the research and you tube has more than a few real good tutorials. once you get it figured out you wont even need vdub
anymore. your a sharp guy i have faith you can make it work.
@all mac users im glad you lovem (some one has to right)
ripsessionkites - 8-7-2010 at 03:04 PM
for you non-mac lovers
i found this: Adobe's Premiere Elements, and its very similar to Imovie
@ Daskirtz, your copy is coming to you shortly
ENJOY!!!

Using Vegas is fine, I've been playing with keyframes and straightening out line-mounted GoPro footage but it's like driving a Ferrari on the daily
commute through traffic - totally unnecessary.
Win of the day goes to avidemux - free, works better out of the box than VDub (works very similar actually except it opens GoPro files ) and has a few nifty features like the play speed slider ...
