Feather banner poles

Can somebody recommend a good sturdy and reliable feather banner pole? (shopkeepers recommend a distributor?)

Yesterday, being so beautiful, breezy and the first day of spring, I was feeling a certain proclivity towards festivity and thought it would be nice to put up a feather banner. I was pulling out the telescoping sections and gently cinching the joints when the carbon fiber of the 4th tube crumbled in my hands. It was a Sanger "StarTec" pole. It had been used maybe once before.

Last year at JIBE I had put up some brand new PL banners and they both failed at the 3rd pole within minutes of putting them up in winds of less than 10 mph. They were Albatross "Tele Enjoy"

I can't see pilot error being a factor here. Any recommendations? TIA

All four of my Peter Lynn banner poles have failed to the point of replacing. So far I've had good luck with the 19' Heavy - Duty Poll By Premier Kites. I love to fly the banners at any given chance even like today!

Out the door to buggy... FINALLY!!

I just get the cheapo pan fishing poles at my local outdoor store.. Like Cabela's or whatever you have around. They all seem to break at some point so I just keep the good pieces and eventually you have enough parts to make another "free" pole! If the flags are going to be up for a while, I run a piece of tape around the joint to keep them from slipping. I think I paid about $15 for a 16 footer at Cabelas..

Hey Angus,

My P.L. pole popped at the very top section. The smallest one. Any chance I can have the smallest one out of one of your broken poles? It sounds like yours broke farther down than mine ?

Carbon fiber gets most of it's strength from it's resistance to stretching (that's why it works so well on rotor blades but fails spectacularly in a crash.) If you can find fiber glass versions, they should hold up a lot better. I think I might know where to get them- gotta' think about that one.

Sure Ken! U2U your address.

I can't figure why they make them so fragile. I like the fiberglass idea. Are Fishing rods in sections or just one piece?

both

angus

search for Black Widow Banner Pole ... best carbon pole around, but pricey.

goodwinds.com (they use to a distributor, not sure now, since I dont fly Dual anymore)

Also not particularly cheap, but.....
Tourmaster, Windruler, Windstinger and larger poles

What about the fiberglass Jackite poles? Or are you looking for a complete system, not just a pole?

acampbell - 21-3-2010 at 02:20 PM

Got the banners, got the groudstake, just the poles that won't crack if you look at them.

Thanks for all the replies. I have some emails off to suppliers with questions. I do not want to be bothered by this problem again at JIBE.

Let me know if you ever find ones that are really durable. I'd like one. And I still need something to hang my Ozone windsock on too.

bigkid - 21-3-2010 at 03:57 PM

As Rip said Goodwinds has some. If you want I can pick them up for you, (they are only up the road from me) and deliver then to NABX. Save on shipping?

Maven454 - 21-3-2010 at 03:58 PM

Not going to be at NABX :(

bigkid - 21-3-2010 at 04:05 PM

anyone from the best end of the country, going to be there could bring them back, lol

Maven454 - 21-3-2010 at 04:08 PM

Only person I know of from out here who'll be there is Don.

acampbell - 22-3-2010 at 01:42 AM

Phreerider is going to be there. He is a day shipping from me anyway. But thanks BigKid. I have a message in to Goodwinds.

locally we get most from the big fishing store 10', 13', 17, 20'
(you can even get them at Bass Pro shops)

then for 24' there are RV poles

Premier Kites does a 35 footer - also expensive

but if you want really long and expensive check this out:

I just need the very smallest section from the end of mine. I am sending it down in the hope that somebody will have a damaged pole that I can scrounge the tip piece from ?

If you have this piece please send it to NABX!
