Man that would be right up my ally. Going to an old area like that.

I got Gold fever once. Was panning everywhere. Found some creeks with gold in them but never accumulated any.

It would be a blast to go pan somewhere like that.

Those were great. How long is the trail you were on and is it open to through hikers?

You have to be registered with the US parks service in Skagway to obtain the permit to cross the border. Beyond Bennett Lake I'm not sure there's any destination other than maybe Vancouver

From Wikipedia:
- 33 miles (53km)
- Prerequisite was one ton of gear (check wikipedia for the "packing list....150lbs of bacon alone)

We went - Canyon City, Sheep Camp, The Pass itself (not a stayover), Happy Camp, Deep Lake and then Bennett (I think)

Alaska cruises are less than $100 a day from Vancouver.

The Whitepass rail is a great lazy mans way to experience this amazing bit of history and is a side trip . I really enjoyed everything about the cruise! Even went snorkling in Ketchican !

Balls of steel to do that!! Bet you couldn't find them for a month after that!

We will just have to look into the permit to go there. It would be a good few day hike at just 33 miles. And heck we already have our passports for the trip we are taking next week!
And 150lbs of bacon. Not to be weird or anything but I have not eaten 1lb of bacon in my whole life. Just don't like it I wouldn't want to have to carry that much!! But they did have some weird rules to keep some folks away.
