Starting up in Cannon Beach

Konakauai - 31-3-2010 at 05:57 PM

So I'm looking into picking up landboarding in/around Cannon Beach, Oregon. The information is simply overwhelming, and I'm hoping I could get some tips on what type of gear would be legit, and where I might be able to find lessons or something.
Pretty much anything would be helpful.

See if you can find anyone local there flying already. Maybe a shop in the area where they can steer you to the 'flying spots'.

If you do find someone flying, go ask them questions. We like nothing better than to talk kites. There are several people on this forum from that area. I'm sure someone will chime in shortly if they aren't all at NABX.

Cannon beach is a very nice place. Seems like a nice beach but I have never kited there. I don't know if there are any restrictions against it but I have never seen anyone flying there like I see in Seaside. I don't live in the area but like to vacation there. There are many on here that do live in the area and will probably help you out. This is also a good place to find some good used gear so it doesn't hurt the bank too much. Good Luck and Welcome:bigok:

Hey thanks for the basics so far. Cannon Beach & Seaside have regulations against certain sized kites pulling karts, but I from what I've read on forums, no one's ever gotten in trouble with a landboard. Plus with Seaside, I've also read that once you cross the river and are on the north bank, it's pretty much out of city limits.

you're so close to sunset beach!!!! Drive a bit north and you'll find kiting heaven :)

A couple of summers ago my wife and I stayed in the Cannon Beach RV park near on the north side of the river. I'd walk the buggy up the street to the beach, it was great. There were fewer people on the north end so no problems.

Sometime in the last year in one of the two kiteboarding mags there was a great photo taken of a guy on a mountainboard with haystack in the background, he was on the south side.

Sorry it took me so long to reply. I had the NABX bug :)

Cannon beach has beach patrol that is not keen on powerkite vehicles because there are so many damn people there, which doesn't make great kiting either. there are some streteches were you can get away with it if you're careful. The closest beaches to really buggy would north seaside aronud 18/21st or sunset beach. There are many places were you can get formal lessons, however you could try to contact eli on the forum or at discoverkiting dot com to see if he's free. Other than that you can hit up folks you see for pointers; find out who'll be at what each when. I'm usually at manzanita, 18m south of cannon beach.

When are you headed down and do you have any equipment yet?

Here is a photo of my wife buggying at Cannon Beach July a couple of years ago. She really didn't like buggying till she gave it a go on a beach. It's the north end. Very few people compared to the Haystack zone.

Hook up with Arkay + head up to Sunset beach when you can't hook up with him. You will almost always find other kiters at Sunset on windy weekends. It is nice to have a close spot but it is worth driving to share flying with friends!

This forum is a great place for buying used gear + hooking up with good online dealers.

You will NEED a 3m low lift kite for learning and then for high winds down the road. There is an amazing deal just came up on an MBS board . GRAB IT !!!!!!!!! http://www.powerkiteforum.com/viewthread.php?tid=13276

Sunset beach man here (Jim's the mayor, what am I?)
anyways, the city of seaside isn't too keen on kiting on the beach near downtown, however, if you go a ways away you wont run into problems. Now to sunset beach.... LOVE IT! Like all the other beaches, its not very good when the tide is in but newbies can always learn to fly better w/o a board. No conflicts with the law, but try to stay clear of other people (I've been there with no one and with half the state so it varies). Umm other than that, if you're coming up to sunset, send me a U2U or email and I'll grab a kite and board and head down. If you don't have equip, I'll let you borrow mine, and I think Jim will do the same. See you soon,
Isaac
