New Foot Stirrups!

art_lessing - 7-5-2010 at 07:09 PM

To those who saw my last ankle breaker foot things.....I finally switched to these...I made them today

They are stainless steel and zinc plate...I welded a 5/8 nut to the buggy dropouts and that set the stage for the rest.....and my welds look like a bad case of roids but they are strong

Cheers

If I ever get to do some buggy riding I'll have to have something like that.

will the two sides coming back towards your ankle slip down from the weight of your leg?
Looks like you may need to tack weld them to the nuts. Then again, guess you have those pieces sandwiched pretty tight.

Lots of sharp stuff to slice skin with there ?

Maven454 - 8-5-2010 at 07:03 AM

That was my thought BR. Looks kinda sharp to me.

actually they are very dull because I spent a good amount of time filing them ...and they are tightened really tight so they won't fall

Outch I'd rather be cut with a sharp butcher knife, than torn with a dull butter knife. But loose the sneakers and some quality high top work boots you'll be cool I think.
Also are the straps metal as well? I would switch them out with nylon straps. Much friendlier on the back of the shoe.

find an old seat belt ideal for this task

Various grades of webbing are available from most stores well stocked for kite making supplies, well-stock camping/climbing supply stores, or marine supply stores (West Marine or Defender).

I can see the thinking behind using rigid strap but in this case I would defiantly be wearing boots with those heal straps Art...

Thick rubber conveyor belt works well, I have used webbing of all descriptions, and finally ended up with some really thick webbing that holds its shape and is always where I want it, its about 5-6mm thick...the thin stuff would often twist over etc in the wind prior to putting your feet in

You can see the different stages of heel straps I have used

HERE

I know one thing after using heel straps for about 2 years, I would never go back to not using them

Crap, you guys are doing your best to make me go out and work on the bug.

I had a plan for today now this is making me forget what I needed to do.

Those look great Art - will save a lot of fatigue from legs and knees.

Bladerunner - 10-5-2010 at 04:37 PM

It wasn't the edges of the frame that I was thinking of it is those bolt tips. Somehow they looked sharp and unforgiving ?

art_lessing - 11-5-2010 at 08:33 PM

ok you were all right..they didn't work for one reason or another...and they rattled off :(

oh well...the bottom straps that is...so anyway I will be replacing them with nylon.....but on a good note I did get permission from a land owner to use the alfalfa field we occasionally use...He saw me out there and was curious as to what I was doing...then we got to talking and he was really nice and was very glad that I was respectful about new growth and such ...so he said we could use it whenever we wanted....:wee:

Is that the field across from the soccer complex? the field full of jumps? I don't know why but that was a super fun ride. I was very sore the next day, but it was good times.
