buggy freestyle

mougl - 20-5-2010 at 08:32 AM

After considering the buggy I have, and the limited space here in Naples, I've decided to get started on my ground work. Backwards, 360, 2 wheel, etc. Anyone have any tips they can offer to a freestyle newbie? (Besides video all my sessions for the hilarious dirt buffet  )

Thanks!

To go backwards you kinda need to lock your knees then when you are going off in the wrong direction (you will!) stop, think about it, start again, stop, readjust, etc. If you try to adjust on the fly you'll wriggle about all over the place. Once you think you can go backwards, go the other direction! Once thats nailed, put a load of bags out in the field & slalom round them - you'll get bored but spend a good hour to get amaaazing control! Flick the wheel away from the kite & voila a 180 :) Use whatever kite your happy with, some people prefer bigger, I prefered a 1.5m Flexi bullet!

Put a bag out & learn to do emergency stops - Keep the kite high, turn 45 degrees away from the kite & push on the downwind side rail. Make sure the bag has nothing in it you dont mind rolling over! Once you're happy with stopping in both directions, try making it a slide; then make it a forwards to reverse transition slide (these feel really nice). If you can powerslide, two wheels are really easy as it's just a continuation from that & a bit of balance :)

Ride safe & enjoy :)

Experiment and be prepared to get ripped out of your buggy :) Elbow, knee pads, and a helmet!

IMHO, flying backwards is just like flying forwards. The main difference is the searing, since the direction is provided by the "back" of the buggy (your front fork going in reverse), when you move the foot pegs just a little it will caus the back end of the buggy to swing out pretty far. So if you are trying to go straight you can't move your feet much. Small movements translate into big adjustments. Which for me also made doing a backwards 180+ much easier to do than a forwards ones.

Look up videos online of buggy freestyle, checkout the riders, PL - Brian Holgate, Flexifoil - Craig Sparks, Will McKean ... you can get a bunch more sponsor rider names from the manuf web sites:

referring to your avatar i would also say, shorten your downtube a bit so you have more control over your front wheel especially when you're on two wheels.

easiest way to get up on two wheels when your underpowered

Curious about the kite / wind combination that makes for a day like that. You recall?

doublespeed360 - 20-5-2010 at 08:54 PM

360s, cut hard half way through. turn the other way and watch your neck with the lines.try bob childs method and crash and learn that what i do ,no pink skirt here. best done on hard sand all tires . practice ,plenty of seat time, it looks wicked cool.throw one at the end of run ride off in the other direction.

hehe thanks :) Can't believe that's almost a year ago, seems like aaaages! Did you ever find the smaller Phantoms Todd? x

For the two wheels edge hard away as if you are going to slide, then flick the front wheel towards the kite then straighten up immediately & balance :)

Todd - 21-5-2010 at 04:31 AM

Yes, I was able to pick up a 6m in mint condition from somewhere over there... I forget :D Now if I can only get you to find me a 9m I'd be set! When will we see some new video?

mougl - 21-5-2010 at 07:52 AM

Thanks for all the input!

Can't wait to get out in the bug Sunday and eat some dirt....er I mean practice!

bartiebat - 21-5-2010 at 07:55 AM

Hmm, a year on would be a good time :) Andy has a broken collar bone at the moment so I'll sort something in June :) You see, I'm glad we kept out 6m now - perfect for post injury sanity!!! I'll keep an eye out for a 9 :)

Good luck Mougl x
