4D Matress Air Pumps-Arc kite?

sofa king - 29-5-2010 at 03:12 PM

I've seen a video on youtube of someone using a coleman quickpump, but it looked different. I've found this for $10shipped and was woundering if this would work fast enough? or recommendations for what anyone else uses?

I used one of those for pumping up a mattress and it ATE the batterys.
A slightly better idea is Here

120mm 6/7 Volt DC Fan, Radio Shack part # 280-1108, $9.99
7.2 Volt RC (Car) NiCad Battery/ Charger Combo pack, #23-322, $19.99
7.2 V Connector repair kit for RC cars, #23-444, $4.99

Cut the PC-style connector off the end of the muffin fan wires. The connector kit has the same connectors as the battery and charger and comes with wire crimp connectors attached. Strip the fan wires and crimp on the appropriate connector to mate with the battery pack. Charge the Ni-Cads with the AC charger and you are good to go.

You can save some money and simply buy a 6 volt lantern battery but I thought the rechargeable battery was elegant and simple and would save in the long run. Easy to carry, too. Entire travel weight with fan and battery pack = 1 lb./ 0.45 kg

I thought I would have to make some kind of sleeve or duct for the fan, but I just closed the zipper around the square fan case as snug as I could. The small gap remaining proved no trouble. Watch your fingers in the fan- it won't cut but still smarts.

Within about 4 minutes the Phanny was plump and eager to fly off my lawn. It was inflated as much as if I had just flown it.

HAVE YOU SEEN THE MUFFIN PHAN???

Also a vidio of herc's fan.Here

Didn't push enough volume to beat mother nature on a day with too low of wind to fly. I bought one but give it a failing grade.

beat me to it willard lol

Seen the muffin phan in person (though it wasn't needed at JIBE) and that thing looks like it means business!

how long you think it would take to fill a 15meter?

WIllardTheGrey - 29-5-2010 at 03:43 PM

I don't have any ARCs (Sob), but it took about 10 minutes to fill a queen size airbed.

sofa king - 29-5-2010 at 04:49 PM

i just made one of those fan's using a 80mm fan, with 6(or was it 8, i forget) 1.5v D batteries(or was it C batteries, i forget). it worked but not as well i'd like. Since i just tried it in 0mph winds, i think it might work better in say ~10mph wind.....but it took about 10minutes to get it almost half way filled so meh....I think ill get this

http://www.amazon.com/Coleman-High-Performance-Rechargeable-...

and use it mainly to "top it off" or fill it the rest of the way. or better yet stick it in the far inflate end while the wind fills the near inflate end.....Thanks yall

EDIT: after watching that video again, i think ill try adding a carboard funnel type thing like he has

Also how did you hook up the batteries? Series or parallel. + too - or + too +.

Most 80mm fans are 12 volt 6 1.5 volts in series is only 9 volts but if you hook em in parallel you sill have just 1.5. That extra 3 volts will make a big difference.

OK, I'll show the contraption I put together. I have put soft foam 1"x1" around the fan when its in the can. Made it seal up. This thing has been used at least 8 times and still going on one set (2) of 9 volts.

It fills the 19m quick enough by my standards. Never timed it. When I go to the field it also goes. Never have wind on the ground there.

The handle came off the GI board box.

I'm using 18v two 9's in series. 12v fan doesn't seem to mind and turns a little faster.

Like the use of the Antec computer fan. Nicely put together with minimal fuss. Bonus points for reuse of the GI board box handle.

That blows--but in the bad way.

I made a muffin fan inflator with a 5" case fan and a 14V battery pack. IIRC, it filled a 10M Scorpion in 35 seconds. My new battery pack is 16V, so maybe it's faster now. ;-)

I started w/ a cheap 4D pump from Walmart - it stopped working soon after I got it.

arkay - 1-6-2010 at 09:42 PM

Hardrock, nice iteration on the design.. i like the casing!

... but I'm still missing something here. My v19 needs about 9mph to fly, and in 9mph it takes about 2 minutes to fill the kite super puffy and if I use both ends to inflate it at once, then it takes about 1m. Why the need for the prefiller? If it's not windy enuf to fly why bother filling it?

WIllardTheGrey - 1-6-2010 at 09:47 PM

Hardrock is inland so hes got ok wind up top but next to none at ground level. It sure is nice being on the coast :karate:.

Yep,,,My spot simply wont fill a kite. Seems I can fly in less than 9mph tho. I'm not talking about riding, just static. Keeping it moving.

I'm happy just swinging it from side to side if thats all I can get.

It has the TET mod, maybe that helps, I duno.

I have filled it and not get to fly also. Bummer that is. The prefiller was put together well before I even seen an Arc but knew I was getting it. So I like it now and really need it.

But like you say arkay, they fill quick and nice on the coast.

The wife got me a Ryobi 18v lithium multi tool package for X-mas and the fan is the bomb for pre filling an arc. Filled the 15m Charger in 15-20 seconds.
We had it at the track Sunday to keep cool and ran it for hours on high on one battery.
