nice video, you really need a PLUS account ... i enjoyed racing with you around the statue that day. however you can see how small the park is and how bumpy it is.

the Beach Racers that ken is using do fit on STD rims, but they work better on AS Rims at 4 psi for the softer stuff.

you missed a semi good SUN - j/k, jumpin with the Speed 3 was a new experience. it was good for the last 10mins as we were leaving

I'm jealous - if you think THAT'S a small park, you'd hate it here :lol:

... is that the park where they put that stupid "work of art" in the middle? Looks like an even more pointless waste of money but at least it doesn't seem to be bothering you guys too much ...

Has anyone ever screamed up and over the hill only to realize some little kids toddled onto "your" tack? Just a friendly reminder... we don't have a view of what's up over the hill and vice versa. It's a blind spot!

Every time I fly, I remind myself that it's a public park and every person there, flying or not has a right to the space. (as much as it can be annoying at times)

I'd really like to hear feed back from other GP pilots (our others flying in a small public spaces) A few complaints about having to run out of the way of the buggyers, (or worse) and we're screwed. I for one want to fly at GP for many years to come!

not really, *heading to the statue*, if you take the right side you can view who is on the hill first, and coming back you want to be on the right side closest to the path. driving on the path is a bad idea too ... however it was funny watching Ken #3 hit the garbage can. ROFL.

at the beginning of every season, we have a short chat with the Parks board, both Paul and Serena. So far from last year there was only 1 complaint however it was "a kite" not that hit someone but wasn't defined towards us per say. They are also aware of the NAPKRA community we are building. so, it would be a good idea to sign up and I guess we all need to wear a helmet whether isn't blown 1knot or 15 knots. oddly i buggy with a helmet but board without one. must be a fashion statement, time to invest into a mtn board style helmet. As BR has stepped up the plate to rep Club #11, so I will support his efforts anyway I can.

common sense also comes into play, when ken #3 and I race we are there at the crack of dawn and as the crowd builds, the speed comes down a few too.

actually were on the table next month to access a new area for us as City Richmond has acquired this land.

It's true, I avoid creating waves, I dislike confrontation. And yes, Ken, I wrote it. I don't want to start an argument, or sound like a spoil sport. I just don't think it hurts to have a bit of safety dialogue going when it comes to bystanders, especially kids. Maybe Ricky's comment was a joke, but I don't think goading anyone into being reckless on the field is funny. Ricky, it wasn't funny.

I come to the forum once in a while, but rarely post, but this one I couldn't pass up. All I want to say is that, I think we're all on the same page when it comes to safety, or I should hope so.

If there were some little kids sitting, playing in the sand, over the hill in the blind spot, it would be hard to see them in time, (something that's happened to me before). So what's the solution? Slow down at the top of the hill? ... drag but ok... Have a spotter, when we really want to race?... maybe...

I don't know. I'm just saying it's one thing that scares me.

There are just way too many non flyers on the field that are oblivious, to put it kindly. For instance, last week we were flying on a fantastic south wind. A father and his children were standing on the south ridge and he was sending his RC car out, south, straight across my tack AND allowing his children to run after the car! Secretly I wanted to run over his car, because I believe he was doing it on purpose. In this instance it was easy enough to slow down and let the kids know I was going to be coming back through that way (over and over) and all was fine. The kids had more smarts than dad.

I'm just saying, don't make your fear of the pink skirt rob you of your common sense.

The day the kids were playing in the sand and I didn't know they were there, was the day I screamed straight up the hill. (because I could) Live and learn.

In regards to the people running out of the way and ducking, I think a lot of that is over reaction on the bystanders part as a lot of people are not accustomed to seeing kite buggys but point well taken...saftey first.
Also...remember that my gopro is a wide angle so I know that I had plenty of room as I was passing the people.
I will try and be a little more cautious next time out.

On the other note of hitting a garbage can...it was actually one of those big cement park benches right by loopin lane that I hit....sorta misjudged the width of the Apexx and hit it with my left rear tire...lol

I am going to chime in hare... It's my home field too.

I think we all know to slow down when the park gets busy. I know that I was zig zagging around all the single liners with my kite way high to keep the speed down later in the day K3 made the vid.

Going over the hill blind at speed. I hope nobody is doing that.

I think they jump out a foot or two right when you drive by.

I'm glad to see this discussion with regards to flying safely at Garry Point Park. As a beginner I've been hugely aware of the risk I pose to both other informed kite flyers as well as to the blissfully ignorant park users.

In the past few months I have made it a point to take my one day off a week to fly at GP rather than to go buggying on the weekends. Weekends are definitely more fun in terms of having the company of the power kite family but weekdays are sheer delight because of all the open space in the field and the relative lack of general public in the park.

That said, while my brother and I have been honing our buggy skills on our weekday play sessions, we have still encountered the occasional park user that we had to be extra cautious about, for example, the young couple that were enjoying their romantic intimacy in the middle of the park, a spot carefully selected, I'm sure, with the thought that they would be less conspicuous to the walkers who like to stroll the gravel path around the permimetre of the park. It took a lot of careful maneuvering and kite management, especially for a newbie such as myself, to avoid disturbing the amorous pair and I dare say, judging by the glare I received once while passing by perhaps a little too closely, I didn't always manage the safe distance that I was trying to achieve in my efforts to share the park.

Dustysocks, I'm glad you opened this dialogue because I, like you, want to do all I can to keep the park safe for everyone and especially to avoid incidents with kites so that we can keep flying in this prime spot for a long time to come.

nice video K3. I loved the sight of the people diving out of the way. Sure that is not politically correct, but i get tired of us having to bend over backwards for the rest of the brain dead general public all the time. I had it pictured in my mind you were yelling at them to get the heck out of the way

I have to ask .... why did you have that backpack behind you in the seat and those wood blocks on your feet? Oh oops never mind I forgot the Apexx down tube doesn't slide in far enough for you to reach the pegs :saint: :lol:

i should also mention that he cant really see over the CadKat Wheel and Front Fork. sometimes I'm scared too when he's coming at me so I have to raise both hands in the air to let him know someone is heading towards him.

honestly, ken #3 has come along way since his earlier days. he keeps up with me now and its some fierce competition going on. Yes, he finally has bumped me a few times. good job, bro.

Lets not be too hard on him or he will start telling everybody that comes close to " watch the lines " again ! We just nicely weened him from that habit ! :wink2::wink2:
Every year since I started at GP I have heard how we are going to pisss the wrong person off and get shut down. So far we have managed to grow the sport and stay out of trouble. :ninja:

It never hurts to talk safety . I just think it belongs in buggy camp ( with a helmet on! ) not online. :dunno:
