morinville Alberta GeekFest...edit

revpaul - 1-6-2010 at 09:39 AM

oops.
it's July 9, 10, 11. 6th annual event.
Derek told me it was this weekend and i went with it. :spin:
just a heads up...
there is a "anything sky bound" event this weekend just a tad west of morinville(i believe it's this weekend..i'll have to check my emails it might be next weekend. i'll update post later tonight). it would seem more geared to RC flyers but only because there are more of them right now.
it's anything "sky" oriented but anything fun is welcome.
there are paragliders, ultralights, kites, rockets and lots and lots of RC planes/helis.
GeekFest.
i went last year and kited/buggied great. lot's of fun stuff to see do. i'm going again.
Scott is owner of the property. 1/4 section (no crops...just weeds) with decent sized grass runway.

can i stay at your house on FRI / SAT???

macboy - 1-6-2010 at 12:05 PM

Yup on this front if u want - my doors are open to any of you although you'd have to settle for the inflatable bed (an original Twinskin :) or the couch. It's a serous offer anytime it's needed. By the end of the month we'll have our proper guest room back.

Bring a hammer

i would love to help you build, but im actually the worst with tools. I would probably do more damage than good.

please let me know the details as we get closer to the event. I plan to catch the first flight out on FRI and leave the morning of SUN so I can be back at work.

i might be able to get one of my brothers to pull their travel trailer to it. should be able to fit 6-8 people.
personally i'd say a good full day would do the trick though. i went from about 9-ish to 9-ish on a saturday. lot's of great stuff to see. i think saturday was when all the official rocket people showed up there and let those things fly. winds were up when we got there so kiters were going then winds were down and RC fliers/rockets were going. then winds picked back up and we ripped it up some more until close to sundown. scott takes people up in his ultralight(s) and he said he was trying to line up a hot air balloon and a gyro-copter for this year. no idea if he did or not. seemed like a few light aircraft and other ultralights showed up for a visit throughout the day too. i think they all take people up for a ride. i never went. like to keep feet on the ground.
this event is actually pretty cool considering it's pretty much just Scott and is dad inviting people out for a BBQ really.
it's grown into t-shirts and posters now but it's still just Scott and his dad inviting all kinds of interesting people they have met throughout their travels to come out and have some fun.
I've known Scott only for about a year or so but he's the guy, at any event i've seen him at, that is always helping others try out this and that.
it's a quarter section but there is plenty of parking (grass/lawn) for campers/trailers/tents. there was probably close to thirty trailers/campers there last year and plenty more day trippers like me. he's bringing in a couple of outhouses this year and a couple of BBQs.

Hey Paul - dug through my old email and it looks like it's July afterall. Sad that it's not sooner - but happy that I'll definitely be reno'd out by then!

WAHOO!

Rip - we'll have some demolition to do this weekend so skills with a hammer are actually what you DON'T want. Since you don't need to worry about GeekFest why not come make a weekend of it?

Guess what's last on the list to be torn out? The closet holding all the kites ; ) I SWEAR! I'll grab a pic 'cuz it's ridiculous that that's how it's gone down. Too funny.......

jep Juy 9, 10, 11.
dereks booked on a fishing trip and James' second child is due July 14 so he won't likely be traveling far/long.
so...probably no go on travel trailer.

after the hockey game last night headed out in sweet 17 to 20 mph winds. Finally the dark stopped me and the fact I'm off to work at 5:30 am...lol. Will try my best to make it, already put my reservations in for Geek Fest. I haven't seen these members of the family in over 10 years but will try and drag them along.
