Jumping With The Kite,

ozonecrazy - 13-6-2010 at 07:30 PM

Just to introduce my self first Im ozonecrazy aka Danny, And new to (The Power Kite Forum)

I was wanting to know is it possible to achieve jumping into the air with a ozone imp quattro 1.5m, ive heard it's possible but ive been out in a 20mph wind and achieved nothing unless im doing the technique wrong. Yes in this wind the kite is very strong for a 1.5m and ive had numerous times been skudding with the kite across the beach (VERY FUN) so i may be getting the technique wrong any help with this will be great

Thanks (ozonecrazy)

nope... do not try to jump with that kite. You'll need at least four meters before things happen slowly enough to jump safely.

here's a good (and often cited) video of what can happen.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZNDYw-lAdRc (high winds kite, 3m blade 3 on bar)

This is a kite with about 4 to 5 times the power of the quattro. Also, if you were to jump with the quattro, the kite would be moving a LOT faster and as you can see the guy in the video is having a hard time keeping up with his kite.

sorry mate, you need min 4 m to have any hope of jumping safely.

cheezycheese - 13-6-2010 at 08:13 PM

it may take you up in the right/wrong winds... but the ride down... oooohhh boy!!!

furbowski - 14-6-2010 at 07:19 AM

on second thought ... don't want to say one can jump safely on a 4m.

It's just that 4m is about the smallest size I feel I can get decent air (6-10 feet, static, soft sand) and keep the risks down to a tolerable level. I'm 155 pounds.

Any time somebody jumps on a kite, there's risk. It can be reduced and sometimes even minimized, but it's always there.

Sorry to say you haven't got a kite for jumping there. It's name is Imp not Frenzy.
You however are in trouble. You , like us , are ADDICTED now ! ;)

It is a general rule of thumb that an average weight person requires a 5 sq. m. kite to have enough canopy to float out a jump.

You can get lifted by a 1.5m but it would take more than 20mph winds, the right ( or completely wrong ) technique and a death wish.

Save money and buy a bgger kite! :cool2:

P.S use the search engine on here for lots of good info on jumping.

Thanks for all the help,

thanks for the help guys looks like the next kite i will be needing is the imp quattro 3.5 i think that should do ive had a go of the two and ive been wiped up no problem and landed well.

the bad thing is im hooked on the sport and always have been but with stunt kits, now im wanting to play with the big kites i think 3.5m is a safe havan for me,

Kamikuza - 14-6-2010 at 05:09 PM

Welcome!
I've done little tiny jumps on my Cult 3.5, like extended hovers :spin: but for my fat arse, nothing exciting happens till 5m or more. I think if you really want to get into jumping, get a huge depower!

Bladerunner - 15-6-2010 at 06:34 AM

The Imp quatro is a good kite but might leave you wanting something bigger very soon. I don't think the Imp has lift designed in to it? If you want to jump there are far better options !
If you are light weight the PL Twister 4.1 is a reasonable priced kite designed with lift in mind.

I'm not wanting to discourage you, on the contrary I, like you have found a new passion n this sport. But Be Fecking Carefull jumping and listen to these guys. I was recentlly Lofted 30 + feet by a 3.5 M hydra and let me tell you it didnt let me down soft and Since has put some fear about jumping into me ( I should note that I love to jump and Do big stunts on my Dh bike and Cliff dive also ) and the fear is certainlly Counter productive to learning.

my advice.

5M or bigger Depower kiite.
Ankle braces, and Soft landing surface like sand.
And Myslef, I will be learning proper jumping over Water where the Risks are minimized, Had I been lofted by my hydra over water I'd have splashed down and Had a big grinn, Over land the same jump now leaves me recovering ( and static flying in light wind with cast and broken ankle ) with 12 Titanium screws, 2 plates and some 37 stitches.

Looking at Ozone frenzys for january/febuary, When Ill be good to Snowkite... And Newly found respect for wind..

Be ambitious, have fun, and Know that mother nature Can #@%$#!slap you If you dont respect her..

:)

worst ankle sprain ever on my Ozone Imp 3M - better to do small jumps in soft sand and winds less then 20mph

big jumps on such a small kite will not end well - now I don't even like to jump on my 7m as it drops out of the sky so much faster then >11m

practice all the motions and learn to fly backward, upside down, reverse, handlepass, spins etc - but not much air

pokitetrash - 1-11-2010 at 10:09 AM

Hmmmm. No posts from Ozonecrazy since June? Hope he's ok.... wonder if the Imp went on the flea bay block after recalibrating the guy.

DHKITE - 1-11-2010 at 04:17 PM

Hopefully not... I would've never thought It possiblle to be so Injured by a kite.... Till now .. Lol.

Nor would I have though it possiblle to do a 3-4 story jump. :eekdrull:

pokitetrash - 1-11-2010 at 05:19 PM

I bet every one of us, especially those of us in our 40's has a weak knee joint, ankle, shoulder etc., from being recalibrated by a kite.

Bladerunner - 1-11-2010 at 05:31 PM

I am thankful every day that I found this sport in my 40's. I have had to accept a few injuries along the way. Now I'm into my 50's pain is just part of the game. Some things , like tennis elbow that I only HOPE to have I get it every time I have a good session now? I'll take 2 or 3 days with a band on my arm for a good session any day ! :wink2:

DHKITE - 1-11-2010 at 10:07 PM

Well I'm only 31 and Already sport a titanium Shoulder, Femur, And ankle Mostly from snowboarding and biking but the latter from the kite.. I think its something that Takes certain individuals to Accept that There are dangers in the sports we choose but that that is part of the fun and So we will continue to Wreak Bodys and Suffer injury's ( hopefully lesser ones ) for the sake of learning and seeking Out the passion in our lives.

I could live to be 105 and regret Everyday the things I didn;t try, hell I may still live to 105 with Tecknowlogy the way its going .

Bladerunner, Check out Traumeel For your wrist, you can get it at health food stores and it kicks ass for Sire mucles and Tendon stresses, also look into getting a powerball, Its a gyroscope inside a ball that you spin with your wrist. Since Downhill biking is my #1 sport and I also Do climbing and Work Construction I know well about tennis elbow and Carpel Tunnel, which Suffers me Every spring Except this one as I got a powerball for $35 Cdn and stretched lots... BAM no more Arm tingle and pain, I also Use a tennis elbow strap on rare occasion.
