Lame-o advertising

Kamikuza - 23-6-2010 at 06:31 PM

Cruising YouTube for vids on kites I'd like to know more about ...

Bloody sick of seeing pencil-necks surfer-doods with erect nipples (WTF?!?) spin and dangle underneath the kite, or at the end of the strings - the kite seldom appears in the shot.
I want to see the KITE, not midget man and his bag of tricks; see the kite dive, turn, relaunch, gets washed over by waves etc etc.

Bah. Guess you can't be demo days, eh :(

Exactly, especially the how to videos. There is not a single how to jump video out there that I can find that shows what they are making the kite do while they jump. It can give a new guy, like me, the feeling that you either know it or you don't with kites, luckily I found this forum :bouncing:

Errr..ummm.... how much did you pay for the videos you are complaining about? It might be a matter of getting what you paid for? :P ;)

Although in some quarters the erect nipples might be the draw :o

These are pretty good at showing what is happening with the board/rider then the kite and then taking several passes in almost painful detail.

Hey I knew what I was thinking about - not my fault you can't read my mind

I'm talking about the promo videos for product from the manufacturers ... the North Rebel one really irked me - there was almost no shots more than a second of the kite flying. The Naish Cult one is better, but you still don't really get an idea of how the kite flies, turns etc. Usually you just get bombarded with phrases the likes of "ultimate depower!" or "improved turning!" etc and don't actually get to see it.

I mean, how hard would it be to make a 5 minute video of the kite only doing kite things? It's not like you have to pay for uploading to YouTube and any monkey with a camera seems capable of doing a better review than the manufacturer ...!

Well that made it perfectly clear what I've been doing wrong...

OK.... that makes more sense. Not sure how reasonable what you are asking for is, but dare to dream. As for the snifty phrases and buzz words, what is advertising, if not hyperbole.

I have only been around for the last couple of product release cycles, but it seems like there is generally a lot of questions about new kites that go totally unanswered until someone (usually a fellow flyer) posts a review. It's equally bad on the print/web side, where details are few and far between on the product pages.

It's even worse in the land of SLKs and dual-line kites where some manufacturers post new kites on their website, but sometimes it is don't throughout the year and with little or no fanfare.

I think you should just buy 1 of everything and start posting reviews (with detailed video footage).

Oh wait.... you must be planning to do that anyway as you are well on the way to doing the first part

:wee: :wee:

Seriously, though... you're point is well taken. Heavan know's a lot of the manufacturer's websites are pretty, but rubbish for functionality and ease of use.

I find myself trying to locate a kite in some of the adds also. I guess everybody can't have a Ruben Lenten advertising their product.

Wait, he's mostly advertising Ruben Lenten.:lol:
Guess you can when your that good.

The best vids I've seen come from real people doing their thing. Carl had a couple good ones that showed the rider and the kite. I know thats different but its what I like to see. You can learn so much when the whole view is there.

I'll have to check out the link wolf provided.

It's like trying to advertise a pair of shoes by getting J-Lo to wear them then film her arse jiggling around. Sure it makes for an entertaining 5 minutes but doesn't learn you anything about the shoes ...

Or better yet, sell some Nike's by filming Angelina Jolie jogging ... :frog:

Hardrock - 23-6-2010 at 11:50 PM

:lol::lol: I already want a pair just thinking about it.

indigo_wolf - 24-6-2010 at 12:29 AM

I will refrain from saying "A pair of what?" Doh!

Kamikuza - 24-6-2010 at 06:15 AM

Not if I keep them in the cupboard next to my kites!

If Nike stopped paying Tiger and Micheal a half Billion (combined) dollars a year to advertize there products they could pay there workers to make them.
Oh but there a great company.:puzzled:
