Broke my Door

Kamikuza - 5-8-2010 at 05:30 AM

Alas, my poor Door is no more!

Out in the ocean today, maybe 14 knots average ... having fun, popping over the waves for little jumps.
Wife came back from her walk and I was feeling my oats, so though I'd show off with a big jump ... hit the wave fast, edged hard and popped off it ... SNAP on landing! Probably only a meter or two up but I must have landed on my front foot hard cos the board folded at the right foot strap nut hole, edge to edge

So I need a new Door!

Can get ABoards Glide here in Japan (shipping will be cheap :) ) but how about shipping from the US? Will it be that bad?

I'd rather not shell out big money on a new one if I'm just going to break it every time I screw the landing from a small jump ...

getting your grind ON,

What kind of door were you using? I've landed pretty hard on mine, and never broke it. Of course, I don't weigh nearly as much as you, but I have landed on it pretty hard. I've also run it aground multiple times with no damage...

sorry to hear that Kami..........................have you considered a directional/strapless............................

acampbell - 5-8-2010 at 04:43 PM

the size may be the killer on shipping from USA.

to Japan....

Max. length 60", max. length plus girth combined 108"

Kamikuza - 5-8-2010 at 05:42 PM

What's that in metric  152cm and 274 ... hmm. How killer is killer? Like, $100?

Have considered a directional (EVERYONE here has one!) but that's a little down the road yet - well a real one is, I think I'm going to buy one of those recycled surfboards next time I'm in Hamamatsu

It's a 2007 Spleene Door 154 ... excellent board, since I put down my Square One pacifier and hardened up, I've had numerous magic sessions!
There's a guy on kiteforum who's well heavier than me and he punishes his 2009 Door ... he said the 2007 are only foam inside, so they're weak but the 2009-10 ones have wood core! He's a big Russian fellow and I think he's going to be my gear guru

In Soviet Russia, the bigger you are, the higher you go ...

... I was thinking the other day, that 4 boards is too many. I doubt I could give away the Square One or the Sumo, but they're no good for me. Wish I'd broken either of those instead of my Door!!! :D

USPS has the 60 inch length rule so that rules them out..............................Fed X and UPS run approx $200 USD...........................................

Kamikuza - 6-8-2010 at 04:41 AM

Yeah it's looking more economical to buy a new one here :( or making one out of plywood :D

tridude - 6-8-2010 at 05:35 AM

take the plunge (no pun intended) and buy a directional...........since your a bigger guy a 6'4 fish should work really well.....................quad fin set up is a tad loose but once you set an edge your off upwind........................timing while turning will be your big issue with a directional since your 17 is slower to turn..............within an hour youll be good to go...................

tridude - 6-8-2010 at 05:39 AM

just had a thought........................Decay kiteboards

based in NZ..................maybe he can give you the homeboy hookup on a larger Door design...............their boards look sweet..............................

ripsessionkites - 6-8-2010 at 07:43 AM

Kami, call me ... i did a replace deal for Dylan too based on his lost board

we can work something out

if it doesnt havent to spleene or fs ... maybe underground?

Kamikuza - 6-8-2010 at 08:31 AM

Shipping is going to be the killer on any deal from overseas, I think :(
... & in 2003 NZ Post quoted $750 to send my landboard to Japan  I doubt they'll do better on a long-arse kiteboard :(

According to the Flysurfer page, there's like 5 dealers here  One store def doesn't list on their homepage and I'm checking the others now ... ok none of them do

Flyboards are apparently wood core, ABoards are a composite of wood and foam which makes me go Eek! although people swear they've never heard a broken one ... UG are just too small ... I was figuring I may as well get Monster Door and milk it for all it got :D

dylanj423 - 6-8-2010 at 12:57 PM

bump for ricardo at ripsession... the door is sweeeeeeeeet.... wood core... light and stiff... i love it

Kamikuza - 25-8-2010 at 02:43 AM

Ricardo is the man - got me the Door on the best deal and went round beating down the shipping companies ... thanks to his excellent effort and the weak US$/strong Yen, it's costing me only a little more than buying an Aboards here  Thanks Rip! KFF

... and here's the damage - so sad, I so loved that board :(
