Buggy Boogie Fall Thang

coreykite - 11-9-2010 at 10:51 AM

Hey Sailors,
Labor Day just passed and that means it's time for the Buggy Boogie Fall Thang!
El Mirage Dry Lake (Elmer's) is the site.
Located in California's Mojave Desert between Victorville (on I-15) and Palmdale. Just an hour and a half from Los Angeles.
Friday through Sunday - September 17th-18th & 19th, 2010.

We camp at Walt's Cove, about 3.5 miles along the lakebed on the right.
Noted by the banner poles and windsocks around our camp and the buggies and kites strewn about on the ground.

For the first-timers, remember to bring water, sunscreen and something to sit on. We'll have shade. There are nice toilets across the lake - About .6 miles away. Bring food too, if you want to eat while there.

Conditions vary so you would want probably every kite size you own. Bring 'em.
Same for your wheels - We buggy, we board, we sail Blokarts and Mantas, sometimes a KiteWing, sometimes in-line, off-road skates too.
All skill levels are encouraged to join us.
Groupies are welcome too.

This is an official Horny Naked Buggy Chicks event.

Woohoo! Thanks everyone for a great time as usual. I couldn't even be depressed about my trailer hitch failure. Thanks again, Marc, for the tow!

thrash - 20-9-2010 at 08:03 PM

BOB HEY THANKS FOR A GREAT TIME.IVE ALREADY BOUGHT A KITE, AND TRIED TO BUY A BUGGY BUT SOMEONE BEAT ME TO IT. PLEASE GIVE ME A CALL SOME TIME I HAVE SOME QUESTIONS FOR YOU! ROXY

jellis - 25-7-2011 at 06:27 PM

Hey Corey
Do you always have the Fall event so close to when we have SOBB? Just that some buggier s that come to SOBB can't afford to go to both so both events could suffer. Like the Challenge 2000 event and nabx HUH?

coreykite - 26-7-2011 at 01:42 PM

Hi Jon,
Since 1994.
Every year, right after Memorial Day and right after Labor Day.

Back when Elmer's was open to all - no fee - it was busy and noisy on most weekends.
Started gathering right after a major 3-Day Holiday with the hopes of finding a slightly quieter Elmer's. It has worked.

I have no idea when your SBBB is scheduled.

I don't see how anybody suffers.
It's a matter of choices.

Quite different from scheduling another event same time- same place without working together. But I digress.

Our scheduling is dictated by the SCTA racing schedule (not good to buggy with 200mph cars whizzing down the lakebed).

This year, The Fall Buggy Boogie Thang will happen the weekend of September 16th-17th-18th. Hope to see everyone there.

SBBB was Fran's event and SOBB is an open event that takes place at Sunset Beach
Oregon since 1999. It startsLabor Day and runs through that whole week with those big long beaches and steady winds.

greasehopper - 30-8-2011 at 04:46 PM

Though this would be a good time to rattle the cage on this thread...

I gotta be back in Yuma Saturday afternoon so I'm thinking of heading up way-too-early Thursday morning and try to roll the wheels off Scout Buggly.

Minshall - 31-8-2011 at 02:11 PM

I should be good to go. All I need is 3 more flights and then the Army should grant me leave.

Since there is a possibility of me attending, everyone should be looking forward to this.

BeamerBob - 31-8-2011 at 02:48 PM

Since I'm so close now, I should be able to attend some or most of this event. I'm going to watch the calendar and try to keep it clear.

BeamerBob - 31-8-2011 at 04:07 PM

Can anyone post up a google map of where camp usually is? If I come in after dark, I want to end up in the right camp. Hoping this works out for me!

greasehopper - 31-8-2011 at 05:38 PM

The western end of "Walt's Cove" on the north shore line is the general area. Spring Thang saw several people there by Thurs. Perhaps, Mark will be there already so look for the "stripper joint" multi-color flashing diode lite pole. Can't miss that, it's a most excellent beacon in the nite.

Dan's bit http://www.windwizard.com/elmirag.html
A great map about 3/4 of the way down the page

Corey's bit http://buggythang.org/whatsathang.html

BLM Barstow's bit http://www.blm.gov/ca/st/en/fo/barstow/mirage.html

Bring chem lites and a good rider's beacon as the moon should be right for some good night riding.

I won't be able to make it to this one - I've got some things going here that weekend.

Mark, Ken - live it up for me guys...

BeamerBob - 31-8-2011 at 10:22 PM

This sounds like fun, I might just find my way out there.

kite killer - 4-9-2011 at 07:09 AM

O.K. So I got the joint! Someone else must provide the strippers. I will bring my pole.

Minshall - 4-9-2011 at 08:53 AM

If you get me drunk, I might end up stripping.

Okay guys, I get the joke but this IS a Family Friendly atmosphere so we'll have to refrain from bustin' out the g-strings and pasteys this time around, m'kay ?

Samm - 4-9-2011 at 09:45 PM

Ill be there sometime Thursday afternoon and finishing the weekend out. Looking forward to meeting everyone!

dadinpain - 5-9-2011 at 01:25 AM

Hello, The name is T.J. I am new to the board but a long time reader. I was curious if I drove the motorhome out and had a cooler full of cold beer....maybe someone would let me try a few kites and diff gear? I am not sure if this old body is really able to do this. I was an extreme skater back in the day, and just think I will pick up on this pretty quick. Bueller....Bueller......Bueller. Thanks

Minshall - 5-9-2011 at 05:21 AM

Beer or no beer, I would let you try out some of my stuff.

kite killer - 5-9-2011 at 08:00 AM

Yeah, no beer needed. Will have a too many kites, and a land sailor to try...little less learning curve..ouch

greasehopper - 5-9-2011 at 09:36 AM

That's one of many reasons I like this event so much. It's an opportunity to share some shade and a cold adult beverage with some really great friends, meet some new ones, develop skills and try new stuff on a nice big flat playground. Besides, sometimes I forget how to "play nice and share my toys" these days. This deal always gets me back in the swing of being "human" again when helping introduce the sport to new folks.

You're too humble. You've offered me your gear more times than i can count!

Can't wait!!!

Ramij2 - 6-9-2011 at 09:49 PM

I ready for some night flying again. It was so much fun, except when the wind did a 180 and blow the oppossite of camp. I left the buggy out on the lake bed with no strobe on it, walked back to with the kite in the air. Took me about an hour to find it. All in all it was a blast. My HQ Montana 7m should be back from Fix My Kite this week. So i'll have my low wind kite back. :singing: :wee: :singing:

kite killer - 7-9-2011 at 07:17 AM

Start buildin a great light set up. I will start you off with a cat eye bike headlight. Look for some running led's , and my favorite the wheel spinners. If you are real nice I'll let you try a Manta!

Minshall - 7-9-2011 at 07:45 AM

What day/time are people planning on showing up? That way I can figure out what day/time I should get there.

BeamerBob - 7-9-2011 at 08:15 AM

We plan on leaving out early Saturday and making a day of it.

Ramij2 - 7-9-2011 at 04:45 PM

I plan to be out there thursday around 6 or 7 pm on the playa. :spin:

Minshall - 7-9-2011 at 06:53 PM

Sounds like a few people will be there on Thurs. I should get there Thursday Afternoon then. Can someone who knows the area U2U me a phone number, so when I get lost I can get directions.

greasehopper - 13-9-2011 at 04:17 PM

Just got off the phone with the El Mirage visitor's center and in spite of the present closure, they feel confident the rains will subside and the playa will be nice and racey (and re-opened) for Friday / Saturday.

Minshall - 13-9-2011 at 05:01 PM

Damn I hope it is open on Thursday when I get there.

kite killer - 14-9-2011 at 09:30 AM

Morning report at Elmers ..Closed:ticking:... Going to try the front gate?/ heading to Harpers if I can't get in. Be a few of us out there anyway. Check pre-event Harpers for location.

BeamerBob - 14-9-2011 at 10:46 AM

This is the location for Harpers. It's half the drive for me. Why is this event at El Mirage instead of Ivanpah? It's going to feel funny driving past Ivanpah to go to an event.

http://g.co/maps/wb4eg

van - 14-9-2011 at 10:49 AM

Would be an option to have an event at Ivanpah in the fall. El Mirage is nice to ride in when you have nothing but Ivanpah is close by.

gilligan - 14-9-2011 at 12:33 PM

El Mirage is a different animal. Terrain, obstacles... the early morning airshow. It's nice to be able to get off the lake occasionally and mix it up. Graze wide, not deep!

Going to Harper's if Elmers still closed tomorrow morning. Not a bad second choice and driving time about the same for me. Sure will miss that awesome BLM port-o-potty. Hope to see y'all either or!

Bob

ihatework - 14-9-2011 at 01:31 PM

So you're back in California and going to El Mirage too huh Bob?

Dangit, You guys better have oodles of fun for me - I'll be up in the city this coming weekend wishing I had room to ride.

Anyone having an after event, event?

BeamerBob - 14-9-2011 at 01:33 PM

I'm an official NV resident now. Just making the easy trip to meet up with some fellow buggiers back in Cali. Hoping for lots of fun and good times!

greasehopper - 14-9-2011 at 03:47 PM

As of 1530hrs they are still closed. The report was 1/10 inch of rain yesterday and it's been clear all day today so I'm fairly certain it will clear up however, I really like the idea of Harpers A LOT. I guess I'll have to bring "Ye ol' honey bucket".

I "think" the concept of Elmer's over Ivanpah was the restriction on motor vehicles on Ivanpah. Tow lines are a must when the wind gets scared off by too many kite lines...

....and the relentless stream of headlights and "jake brakes" rattling down the grade all night...

....and the monumentally fashionable crappers at Elmer's...

....but that's just a guess.

Minshall - 14-9-2011 at 06:23 PM

I talked to thrash today and he said Harpers was the back up plan. If Elmo is closed I will be at Harpers. Can someone give me a call/text if they end up going to Harpers instead? It might save me a headache. Thanks.

kite killer - 14-9-2011 at 11:41 PM

If Elmers closed here is plan "B"
here is the harper directions
on highway 58 w of the 15 and E of the 14 freeways
turn north on harper lake rd.
turn right on power line rd (this is a dirt rd, thats between the 2 large transmission lines also known as Roy St.)
left on CORD20776 the rd is marked with 3 tires laid across the rd (hopefully they are still there)

when you get on the lake bed turn left and follow the shore line we should be in the second cove about a half a mile
this is an easier access then what we went through last year, while there we realized the place is actually surrounded with unique things marshes ponds and wildlife, those who make it there, should go out and back site seeing,
