New Landboard recommendations

Txshooter38 - 15-9-2010 at 03:36 PM

My wife and I have our first landboards in-route. I was wondering if you all could give some tire pressure and other general recommendations for our first rides.

The jury is still out on which kite I should use....weather forecasts 10mph winds for the weekend...just not sure if I should start with a smaller FB or go straight to the De-power which is preferred by most. Quiver listed below. Protective gear is on hand as well. Any advise is appreciated.

what board are ya gettin?

DAKITEZ - 15-9-2010 at 03:54 PM

Looking at your quiver I would say the 7.7 twister is going to be your go to kite for 10mph. your synergy might work but it will be on the low end.

Pump the tires up until they are firm like a bicycle. If you are riding on soft sand you can let some pressure out.

Ride whatever kite is right for the wind.

WeldnGod...An ak103 for me and a lil bomber for the wife....Bionic trucks on the ak103. Also I tip the scales at 203 and the better half at 130.

Dakitez....I was thinking the twister might be a good call to start. I had considered the Ozone 5m for my wife. The twister is a bit of a handful for her....although the other side to that is since it is lifty it could easy some of her falls.

If I go twister should I strap into the harness or leave it where I can dump it?
(handles only--no strap)

Clear B-Roc...I figured most of the speed of the ride needed to be adjusted with the kite. I had just heard that pressure could be lowered in the tires to slow things down for the first few times. Surface will be hard packed dirt.

DAKITEZ - 15-9-2010 at 05:10 PM

hard pack dirt .... maybe you should start with the 5m and see what happens. I was under the assumption you were on grass.

erratic winds - 15-9-2010 at 05:20 PM

tire pressure-hard as you can get...I do 60 psi

WELDNGOD - 15-9-2010 at 05:37 PM

I got 90 psi rock hard wheels and yes lower pressure = slower speed via increased rolling resistance, but at a price, you won't be able to hold an edge against the pull of the kite. You could also easily roll the bead right off the rim if pressure is too low.

Txshooter38 - 15-9-2010 at 05:39 PM

I should clarify...it will be grass/dirt...a practice football field.

So hard tires and maybe we both start on the 5m and I can go to the twister if I don't have enough pull.

WELDNGOD - 15-9-2010 at 05:52 PM

depends on the wind, start w/ what will get ya rollin but it needs to be big enough to trust as you lean back against the pull of the kite. Be sure to get your feet out in front of ya when powered up. You can slide to scrub off speed if ya get goin too fast. Start slow and work up to tricks and stuffand always wear protective gear. Wiping out at 20+ mph is like being thrown out of the back of a pickup truck at speed.

be safe , have fun

Txshooter38 - 15-9-2010 at 06:14 PM

20mph sounds pretty damn fast right now but I am really stoked to get rolling and catch some air.

My wife just took her first few roles down the slope in the front yard....she is pumped!!

I was talking to the wife about the whole if you are going to fall...do it leaning back and fall on your butt. It seems like that is the way you would want to go down b/c the kite would help absorb the fall. Am I wrong??? Better to fall back and "slide out" then get pulled over the front right??

WELDNGOD - 15-9-2010 at 06:21 PM

That is a good theory but it depends if you are carving toeside or heelside. I will work for heelside ,but when you carve toeside ,your feet will be behind you breifly.

If you ain't crashin ,you ain't tryin! speed wobble sucks!

here is a place you need to know about

Txshooter38 - 15-9-2010 at 06:34 PM

LOL....yeah...I am already dusting off the motocross gear. Crashing sucks.

At least I can't come up short on a 40 foot step up on the landboard. Couldn't walk right for a week.

My wife would have other women telling her she should leave the @#@hole that was beating her after a weekend of riding! lol....she has a tendency to "go for it". I think I will give her the small kite to start but it probably won't last.

the R.E.D. snowboard company makes some nice crash shorts, even in 'under' models... the 2010-11 line includes the D3o padding (that crazy shock-reactive gel stuff).

I'm rather partial to the underwear style under the shorts style under my pants...Two layers of protection and not looking like a ridiculous diaper...

PHREERIDER - 16-9-2010 at 05:47 AM

pads gloves everything !

low pressure in the tires will slow it down. the grass/dirt will need decent pressure just to roll out easy.

bend at the hips and knees, stay low, keep your head back...falling back ain't so bad ...going over the front can be punishing. practice hoping out of the bindings static, needs to be snag free. have fun

Txshooter38 - 16-9-2010 at 05:10 PM

There's a good idea. I will practice that before I put a kite in the air. Good call. Wind forecast is up to 13...starting to think about using the synergy 12m and just being gentle to start.

lives2fly - 17-9-2010 at 08:08 AM

If you read the writing on your tyres they generally have the recommended pressure on them!

But low pressure = less speed, more grip.

High pressure = more speed, less grip.

Start with something like 30-40 psi and adjust.

Ride you board a lot without the kite also - it helps a lot for your first few sessions.

a little extra tidbit i learned from kent from a wind of change is that when you mount the tires to your trucks mount them so that the little stems where you fill them with air are facing twoard the board rather then facing out. even though it might be a tad bit easier to fill with air if you fall you can get draged across the ground and those little stems have a posibillity of getting ruined.
