Kite size for me ?

kouye - 19-9-2005 at 06:39 AM

Hi all,
I'm new to the game and looking for a kite to get going on doomwheels. What size of wing would fit my 82 kg (180 lb) in a 20 km/h to 30 km/h wind (12 to 18 mph) on a flat grass field ?
To give you some details, I have been paragliding and paramotoring for a few years now and would like to try power kiting on those days when the wind is just too strong to pull the paramotor out of the car and go flying (hence 20 km/h plus).
BTW, my apologies for asking the usual newbie question that has most likely been answered many times. If there is some FAQ on the topic that I have missed out, do feel free to show me the way...
Looking forward to joining you fun crowd.
Thanks all,
Edward

Hi there Kouye , i'd go for something about 4 to 5 meter . Different kites of the same size can produce different amounts of power depending on their design , so if possible try before you buy . There are now depowerable foils for sale which handle a much wider wind range and would let you buy a bigger but more expensive kite . Doomwheels however dont take as much power to get moving on as board or buggy so you may be better starting with a smaller kite . The only draw back with smaller kites is they can be a bit snatchy , bigger kites fly smoother . Hope this some help to you . Happy blading :smilegrin:Gribble.

Hiya Grib, I actually got a 3 m earlier this week. The wind was off so I didn't get a chance to try it out yet. Went flying instead.
I didn't really make up my mind about doomwheels vs. board yet. I'll get comfortable using the kite first and worry about the wheels later. I'm keeping an eye out for some 2nd hand skates and scooter wheels in the mean time just in case...
I'll let you know how it all goes.

Cool what make of kite you get ? I find blades easier coz i used to skate when i was younger , i guess it depends on what you're used to .
