Land kite recommendations!

lint - 11-10-2010 at 01:56 AM

Hello all!
I currently fly an ozone flow 3m. To be honest it's not giving me the power i want from it, so i'm looking for an upgrade, i want to do more land boarding (including lots of jumping) i am on a bit of a budget but understand you pay for what you get so i realise its not going to be cheap!
Cheers!

if you want jumping for landboarding,, i strongly suggest a peter lynn arc, you can pick one up used for under $400 RTF if you are patient... i got the most use out of a 15m size

Maven454 - 11-10-2010 at 04:49 AM

In less then a month, the Ozone Method should be available. Being a (non-race) fixed bridle, it should be reasonably cheap and as seen in this video, you can certainly land board with it. It's more suitable to jumping then the Flow.

Depower would be an even better way to go, but if you're after low price, you'll be lucky to find an Ozone depower as the resale value on them tends to be pretty high.

To recommend an appropriately sized kite it would be helpful to know your weight and the winds you're looking to go out in and whether you are thinking fixed bridle only or depower and whether you fly at the ocean in clean winds or inland in gusty crap.

If you aren't ready to go the DePower route, a Peter Lynn Twister would fill the bill. Much less expensive and plenty lifty. But DePower is where you will eventually end up.

have u flown it yet? a few guys have stated that the min. bridle makes it wobble a bit, and the profile is ballooned out and doesnt have a solid feel.

i will have a demo in the next few weeks to see for myself.

sounds like your past the steps from your FLOW, jump right into a bar / depower in the correct wind range for you and you'll be aim high in no time.

For an intermediate range kite, I'm sure Ozone would have taken care of any wobbles before the took it to manufacturing :dunno:, but I'll grant that I haven't flown it yet. Have you :tumble:?

I agree that looking into a used arc is something that may work for you. What are your typical winds and your weight?

For fixed bridal I second that PL Twister recomendation.... very solid feel with great lift... Easy on the wallet.

Interesting, since they only went to manufacturing at the beginning of the month.

NZ? Why are you getting them from New Zealand?

bluefunelement - 12-10-2010 at 10:11 AM

what else do you plan to do under your kite?
I went from an Ozone 3m IMP to a PL840arc, FS Warrior 16.5, then started on LEI with my 13m Instinct.

If you stay on land the PL's and Ozone's are great - probably a used Frenzy 10m would be a great depower kite to learn on

If you want to hit the water (god forbid) then consider the PL or an LEI. Neither of which will take the abuse of bushes and beach wear like a foil will

As indelicate as it might be, it would help to know how tight a budget. It would certainly help as far as determining whether you are going to be limited to FB or depower.

Maven has some Ozones that are probably minty fresh which would fall into the Depower camp, there is still at least one Montana floating around. On the FB side, there are some PKD kites that haven't found a home yet.... they don't receive as much limelight, but they're very nice kites.

ATB,
Sam

yes they are production

and NZ because thats where OZ is located.

Maven454 - 12-10-2010 at 11:34 AM

Have they actually moved from France to NZ? I knew they were talking about it, but didn't know it had been done.

Maven454 - 12-10-2010 at 11:38 AM

Anyway lint, sorry about taking over your thread.

Yeah, if you have the money, either of the Mantas that I'm selling should be fantastic for a land boarder. Nice lift and good float. Nice easy bar throw, so all of the pull is going to your harness.

awindofchange - 13-10-2010 at 05:25 PM

Just to clear up some confusion, Ozone's main headquarters are in NZ, they have moved their headquarters which use to be located in France. Ozone kite orders are NEVER shipped from their headquarters in NZ, they are only shipped from their privately owned production factory in Vietnam and usually shipped directly to their authorized distributors. If you are getting kites from NZ, then I would only assume that they are the prototypes or pre-production models or demos. Prototypes are never the same as the final production models and could have strange characteristics such as wobbles or other annoyances because the designers use these kites for continuous adjustments and tuning to get the final settings and shapes for the actual production models.

Ozone (the actual production factory) has only been in production on the Methods since the first of this month (October), so there would be no possible way that anyone would have full production Methods for sale since they have not even been built out of the factory yet. In fact, even the authorized Ozone distributors do not have full production Method's in stock. I do know of a couple people that have the pre-production prototypes though.

When the final full production Method is actually built and available, all authorized Ozone Retailers (including us) will have them available for purchase. We are scheduled to have our first shipment of Method's arrive at our shop within the next 2-3 weeks and like all of our kites, will have demo's for our customers to fly and try. :)

Sorry for hijacking the thread with this post, but felt that the misinformation that was posted needed to be addressed.
Now back to our regularly scheduled topic. :) :) :)
