Tug Hill Snowkite Festival, 2011

 Pages:  1

bobalooie57 - 22-10-2010 at 05:19 PM

I went to a meeting this morning with the Lewis County Chamber of Commerce regarding this year's snowkite festival. As in the past it will be held Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend, Jan. 15, 16,&17 2011. As in the past this will be a free, fun event, and though last year we intended to have a race, it never happened. This year we hope to have a who can jump the highest or farthest, wind/weather permitting. This will obviously be at your own risk, like all the festivals in the past. I will post a link to the registration website as soon as it is ready, all registered participants will get a hat again, and we hope to have T-shirts for sale to help cover the port-a-john costs!:o

Feyd - 22-10-2010 at 08:17 PM

Will there be a race as well or just a huckfest? Nothing wrong with a huckfest. I'm just curious.

bobalooie57 - 23-10-2010 at 04:00 AM

As it stands right now, it looks like the big air contest is all that we are scheduling. We are still talking with the newly forming ASA/NAST, re their requirements, but our festival is held on several different sites along the NYS Rte. 177 corridor, and it's difficult to get everyone together for a race, but a huckfest could happen at any or all of the sites. This fest has always been a "fun", get out and ride type festival, and so we are not sure how many folks are interested in racing, or even competing, we just want to showcase our wind and snow, which should be starting up soon! It was snowing here last night around 10:00pm when I walked the dogs, and there's ice in the puddles this morning!

bigben91682 - 24-10-2010 at 06:59 PM

My calendar is marked!

snowspider - 25-10-2010 at 07:11 AM

I put some long , wide twin tips on one of the snowspiders and hope to stay up in the deep stuff , we'll see. I'll be there with thing one and thing two , they love hanging with the wind mills playing in the deep snow. Missed seeing you at wbb, thing 2 is flying now and loving it! See you on the ice and snow this winter Bob yee haa.

bobalooie57 - 25-10-2010 at 07:19 AM

Can't wait ss, I'd love to try one of your spiders this winter, if possible. I'm willing to travel to Oneida/Onondaga for a good ride! I'm hoping to get one of the local 'chain' sporting goods stores to donate some sleds/tubes for the kids to use during our event in Jan. I figured thing2 would be in the water down there at ww,lol! With blue lips!

flash - 25-10-2010 at 10:10 AM

I so want to come... but.... I might be in South Padre island that weekend... :( You know I will be thinking of you!!

Maven454 - 25-10-2010 at 10:27 AM

Aww flash, you need to show up!

flash - 25-10-2010 at 10:41 AM

well... if you happen to know a sweet fellow kiter willing to let me crash on their couch, i might be able to get tickets from South Padre to Tug hill then back to Denver. Damn... that would be one hell of a weekend!

Maven454 - 25-10-2010 at 12:08 PM

Don't know about couch, but I always end up with a room with two beds (since those are the cheapest) and wouldn't care if you used the other one.

bigben91682 - 25-10-2010 at 12:35 PM

WHat is the lodging situation in those parts??

bobalooie57 - 25-10-2010 at 12:44 PM

The Registration website, which is being set up by the chamber of commerce, will have links to all available lodging facilities, B&B's etc. As soon as this site is ready, I'll post here.

WOOHOO! and I messed up my dates, I think South Padre is the weekend after, so I might be able to make it! And I would totally love to split lodging. I will let you know after Nov 2nd when all the snowkite dates are finalized. :)

oh and bobalooie.. thanks for mentioning that you are working with NAST/ASA. We are really trying to figure out the whole tour thing and love having all the positive feedback. For everyone else..... if you want to be a part of the 'tour' (rider, organizer, buddy, etc... ) and you don't think you are... well guess what: You are if you want to be!!!

Frathouse - 25-10-2010 at 05:41 PM

Can't wait for that snow to start piling up Bob. Hope to make it up a couple of times this year!!!

snowspider - 25-10-2010 at 08:18 PM

The boys did good staying out of trouble. They did got my attention though. thing one was doing body drags thru the sand and like Roc said "you got a crack in the back side you really dont need to slice open the front side." Thing two left a full body impression the soft sand after being suppermaned . I could'nt quite figure where he took off from but you could sure see where he landed!

bobalooie57 - 30-10-2010 at 05:06 PM

For anyone interested, I found a link to a web-cam on the Tug Hill, in Worth, NY. Not only can you see what the weather is doing, it also has a real time weather station, too. http://www.northernchateau.com/webcam.html

bobalooie57 - 1-11-2010 at 06:07 AM

Light dusting showing on the web-cam in Worth, on the Tug Hill. More please?

rocfighter - 1-11-2010 at 05:40 PM

Snowspider that was about the same thing The Kidd did last year. He left a large dent in the beach and was very proud of it!

bobalooie57 - 6-11-2010 at 08:07 AM

Finally got a pic on the worth web cam this am, looks like maybe an inch!

bobalooie57 - 6-11-2010 at 08:16 AM

Weather station at above cam reads wind E at 0 gusting to 5. I found that link at a local snowmobilers site. I'm glad they love the 'weather' too!

CarterM - 8-11-2010 at 04:05 AM

The Tug Hill Snowkite Festival will be held Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday weekend, Jan. 15, 16,&17, 2011. Registration and information will be available as soon as the Chamber of Commerce has it on their website.

ragden - 22-11-2010 at 07:09 AM

Seriously looking forward to this event this year. Just need to go get my boards wax'd and ready for the season.

Once there is snow on the ground, you can expect to start seeing some of us from the DC area making the commute up to you... Just need to figure out logistics and what not...

See ya soon. :)

bobalooie57 - 22-11-2010 at 07:28 AM

Man, I can't wait either! Not sure who CarterM is(spammer) but I'll be there(or here as it may be) I can hardly wait for snow, and it looks like our first big lake effect event may be happening thurs-sat! Big low coming across the lakes, bringing cold air from up north(thanks Canada) I hope we measure it in feet! Bringing wind with it too! :wee: Might have some new vids next week!

flyguy0101 - 22-11-2010 at 09:49 AM

Clothing question- I have never spent any time outside when temps where below zero- what type of clothing/layers to you wear to stay comfy. I am thinking of heading up with my son but not sure we have enough clothes. Any input would be appreciated
Scott

bobalooie57 - 22-11-2010 at 11:14 AM

Layers are best, some lightweight wicking material at the base is a must, duofold or some similar material, I sweat quite a bit just setting up, (sometimes the pow is waist deep! just walking in it is a workout!)and need to get that moisture away from the body. Then maybe a layer of fleece, then your waterproof but breathable layer, Good gloves or mittens with thin liners are very helpful while setting up, a scarf or balaclava, and your helmet should do you. When you stop, that's when you needa parka or something for a while, to keep the chill out while you cool down. We usually have some kind of shelter for rest breaks, a pop-up ice fishing shanty or tent usually does the trick to get out of the (hopefully)blastin' wind. I just got all excited thinking about it!

windzup - 22-11-2010 at 01:09 PM

The plan for this years Tug Hill event is similar to previous year goals. We intend to run races, similar to the ones hosted at the US Open Snowkite Masters. We have always felt that Tug Hill is a sister event to the Skyline SKM, and we are working towards that symbiotic vibe.

A huck-fest will be a welcome addition and allow a fun opportunity for showing off what Snowkites can allow an individual to do.

Doesn't look like any of the east coast events are going to line up with the ASA/Nast tour of races, but the Tug will continue to be a prime part of the Ozone Freeride Tour that is part of the Ozone Race Series. More to follow on that soon. Possibly an East Coast Race Championship, in addition to the National Champion Title given at Skyline in March.

2 factors that allow as well as limit kite racing. 1st is the weather, and if it lines up. Second is the people, and for the past few years there is an overwhelming attitude towards fun freeriding, and less of a motivation for serious competitive racing. We have seen the same thing at NABX over the past decade. Serious racing evolved, and then disappeared when the fun lovers out numbered the serious Darth Vader types. I am truly into all aspects of the sport, and as event organisors, we are constantly juggling ideas that will promote the sport with the feelings of the participants that support the events.

Please feel free to email me with any of your thoughts or suggestions, as that is what will help decide the future of these types of events. I plan to be in NY ahead of the Tug event to help organize and host this years races myself.

I look forward to riding with the many friends and new faces that I expect to see this January. It has been a couple winters since I've kited on east coast snow.

Brian Schenck

bobalooie57 - 25-11-2010 at 07:51 AM

 Great to hear that you will be at our fest this year, Brian, and you will be setting up a race course! Jan, who has been the driving force for snowkiting up here as you know, has the expertise in that area, but is so busy with all the coordinating, etc. has expressed the desire "to just get out and ride", feeling the logistics of a race would be a nightmare. I'm sure with your experience and expertise, we can pull it off. Feel free to contact me in advance of your visit, should you need any assistance. Bob - BTW forecast is for the first major Lake effect(SNOW!) event this weekend! Will let you all know how it adds up!

bobalooie57 - 26-11-2010 at 11:54 PM

Been trying to contact the Chamber of Commerce, to see if their registration web page is up yet, but haven't received any news yet. I did find a web page for the Adirondack-Tug Hill region that includes a listing of available accomodations. Follow the link and click on the lodging section. http://www.adirondackstughill.com/index.php

Thanks bobalooie!

So I have to ask - where does everyone at least from here (PKF) mostly stay?

ragden - 1-12-2010 at 01:26 PM

Last year, the group of us from DC all stayed at a place in Pulaski called Eddy's Place. The rates were very nice, and the rooms perfect for us. There are lots of places to stay, and Eddy's place isnt exactly the closest to where everyone will be (its about a 45-60 minutes drive to the first site), but it does give you the opportunity to consider other venues as well.

I just sent them an e-mail asking about their rates for snowkiting this season (last year they offered us a discount). I will let you know when I hear back from them.
:)

Maven454 - 1-12-2010 at 02:12 PM

Apparently I misremembered how far where we were was from where we were kiting. The upside is that there was a good breakfast just down the street.

ragden - 1-12-2010 at 02:22 PM

Depends on road conditions, I think we can make the trip to Honeyville in 30-45 minutes if we speed a hair. Heading to Sandy Pond was much closer too (30 minutes or so). And yes, the breakfast place down the street is quite good... And prices are very reasonable.
:)

chudalicious - 1-12-2010 at 02:41 PM

There is talk of Ozone and Flysurfer being there. I wonder which site they would be at?

Is there main one?

Maven454 - 1-12-2010 at 02:49 PM

Generally most people show up to whatever site is good for the wind that day.

Amusingly, this is actually pretty acurate. While the Deer Farm was the main site the first year, last year, a different farm field was the first day. The second day everyone was at Hannos (even though the top field was better, whoops). Your best bet is to hook up with someone who knows where all the spots are, and just follow them.

We normally have breakfast together, and debate about where the best spot will be, then make a few calls to the locals (Jan & Bob), and then head out. One year we werent even at one of the "main spots" and had a GREAT day while everyone else was struggling with gusty winds. There are LOTS of places to fly out there, you just need to know where they all are.

bobalooie57 - 8-12-2010 at 08:44 AM

I've attached a tentative design for our snow kite festival T-shirts. I've been asked for suggestions as to how to improve it, if we should add sponsors, etc. We hope to have these available for sale at the festival. Kind of wondering on how many of what sizes, but may have to guestimate by advance registration numbers. Might have the chamber add a "would you buy a t-shirt for x$" or something along those lines.

chudalicious - 8-12-2010 at 11:49 AM

Some feedback. . .

I like it but I think the kite and attached person (least that is the order of things when I fly :) ) should be a bit bigger as they are overshadowed by the windfarm-ness.

I'd be interested in one though!

Maven454 - 8-12-2010 at 11:53 AM

That's because the riders and the kites really are overshadowed by the windmills.

bigben91682 - 8-12-2010 at 11:54 AM

Bob,

I like the overall design as well. I agree the kiter dude should be more prominent. I also think it would look cool as a white design on a blue ( or whatever dark color) shirt, instead of a framed graphic.

ragden - 9-12-2010 at 05:55 AM

The graphic isnt BAD perse, but it could certainly be better... I'd get one, as is, but it depends on the design of the shirt. Would that graphic be on the back or the front? If the back, what would be in the front?

We have some graphically capable people on here, can anyone design a new graphic for the shirt? I'm terrible with that sort of stuff. I can picture it in my head, but I cannot translate that into anything useable in any medium...
:)

snowspider - 9-12-2010 at 07:53 AM

I like it ... very funkadelic ... you can almost feel the power and fun of it all!

chudalicious - 9-12-2010 at 02:58 PM

This is what happens when a web manager does not feel like working. Crude... yes, colors... ignore them. Just thought of it and wanted to see how it would turn out is all so I mocked it up fast, fast.

Couldn't help myself - I love this kind of stuff.

Very nice. Almost like that better than the first.

bigben91682 - 10-12-2010 at 02:26 PM

Had a slow day at work and took a stab at a design:

shehatesmyhobbies - 10-12-2010 at 06:22 PM

Really liking the shirt designs! Great job by all! So wish I could make this event!

chudalicious - 10-12-2010 at 07:14 PM

Good stuff bigben!

bobalooie57 - 10-12-2010 at 09:07 PM

I love them all, ben's and chuda's, and the design I posted, which was made by the Lewis County Trail Coordinator, one of our main allies in local gov't. I think I will forward a link to this thread to him, and he will see what a talented group we have, and maybe take some suggestions. After all, this is as much your festival as it is ours, because without you, we would be just a handful of kiters getting together on the weekend!

Frathouse - 11-12-2010 at 08:45 PM

I love Bigben's design. I want one on a XXL White tee shirt I can wear over my jacket while I ride.:singing:

ragden - 13-12-2010 at 06:25 AM

Nice work bigben, I like that one... :)

chudalicious - 19-12-2010 at 08:58 PM

Any word on accommodations?

snowspider - 19-12-2010 at 09:25 PM

Ridgeveiw lodge Lowville , nice place, about as close to the sites as you can get.

bobalooie57 - 20-12-2010 at 12:26 AM

Once again, this is the best link I have for lodging, I believe it lists all available in the area. Sorry, but there is no one local place that accomodates most attendees, or even offer discounts to attendees, as far as I know. Being a snowmobile destination, a lot of these places already have repeat customers, so advance booking is advised. Sorry I can't be more helpful here. http://www.adirondackstughill.com/index.php

bobalooie57 - 20-12-2010 at 12:43 AM

That last sit will show lodging if you click on it. This is The county recreation site. http://www.lewiscountyrecreation.com/kiteskiing.shtml

chudalicious - 4-1-2011 at 12:52 PM

Ended up booking ridgeview for thurs - sun.

Anyone else getting excited? I know I am stocking up on Tylenol! :)

ragden - 5-1-2011 at 05:36 AM

ridgeview? where is that? Need to call in my reservation this week... Here is to hoping they have better conditions for this event than they did last weekend...

chudalicious - 5-1-2011 at 08:33 AM

Its in Lowville and about 80 bucks a night. If you call, ask for the newly renovated section. Free breakfast too.

80 a night? Bah... I think I'll stick with my cheap-o digs... Long as they have rooms available...

bobalooie57 - 5-1-2011 at 08:52 AM

The Ridgeview, right down the hill from the Hanno lot, on rte. 12 is probably the biggest hotel in Lowville. There is also the Le-Hav motel, at the corner of Rte.12 & Rte. 177,(edit: even closer than the Ridgeview) and I believe the Lighthouse Restaurant in Lowville also has rooms, other than that it is mostly B&B or country style inns listed in the Lodging section. A little further south on Rte. 12 in Lyons Falls is the Edge Hotel, which is a newer facility, and further south is the Headwaters Lodge in Boonville. Not affiliated with any of these, just trying to help out. Can you tell I'm getting psyched? Don't want to jinx it though, as screwy as the weather has been around here. Thawed last weekend, frozen again now, it has snowed some each day this week. I'll head up on the hill tomorrow to see how the snow looks up there. Saying little prayers to Boreas and Zephyrus, hoping for cold and snow!

Feyd - 5-1-2011 at 07:35 PM

Is there a map of the event locations available anywhere? The website say's "Deer River Ranch Base Camp Rt. 177" But there are no specific locations mentioned. I understand there were some issues with attendees and land owners in the past and I'd like to avoid any similar situations. I'm sure a bunch of kites in the air would be a good indication but it would be nice to see a map of the rideable areas. ;)

chudalicious - 8-1-2011 at 09:20 PM

How are the conditions looking?

bobalooie57 - 8-1-2011 at 09:51 PM

I have not been up on the hill since it started snowing again, but it has been snowing a little each day, all week long here in the valley, and it has been cold. I'm hoping to get out tomorrow in the Honeyville area, so I'll know more then.

edit: it looks like about a foot and a half on the web-cam in Worth, NY. I'm hoping, but can promise nothing, to get the map public again early next week, with at least the event sites on it. Sorry for the delay/inconvenience.

bobalooie57 - 10-1-2011 at 08:48 AM

Conditions as of yesterday at the 'new' Porterdale site were about a foot of powder, little to no base, grass was poking up here and there, but even I could get an edge. There is a little snow predicted for just about every day this week, and temps should remain below freezing, so we'll keep what we have, and what accumulates until then. Wind looks to start out light early, and increase to 12 or so throughout the day on Saturday(NOAA Ft. Drum), too soon to predict Sunday. Pray for more! By all means, bring some with you! Can't wait to see all the kites in the air! Bob

ragden - 10-1-2011 at 08:52 AM

Sounds like this year is going to be light on the snow for the event. Bummer as years past we have had so much more... Maybe we will get a freak storm to drop some snow that isnt predicted... Would love to see 2-3 feet of fresh snow again... We'll see... I'll be in the area Friday evening. See ya soon. :)

bigben91682 - 10-1-2011 at 06:53 PM

Hey Gang,

Just got off the phone with Jan, I updated the map to include the confirmed sites for 2010, note that the sites are only confirmed for the 2010 season, and in the case of deer farm, only for the event. So if you are at a random site that isn't identified on the map please get permission from the property owner before you use it (even if you've flown there in the past). Thanks.

Here's the MAP

There's more locations than just Tug Hill sites, but the event locations are labeled with 'Tug Hill - yada yada'

Jan and Bob are constantly working with property owners in the area and there will probably be more sites that have confirmation for access by the time this weekend rolls around, that info will be available at the event.

Looking forward to seeing everyone this weekend.

chudalicious - 10-1-2011 at 10:31 PM

Seeing as though i cannot see past page two of this thread because page 3 just goes back to page 1, can someone please let me know if the conditions are shaping up for this weekend?!

Have to cancel the hotel before wed if not!!

Good thing you csn still post even though I can't see it.

bobalooie57 - 10-1-2011 at 11:04 PM

@ chudalicious, if you go to your user control panel, then edit profile, change your posts per page to some large number (mine is 200) it should clear that problem for you as long as you are logged in. I use the NOAA page for Fort Drum, NY for weather/wind predictions. Right now there is enough snow to edge, but not as much as has been in the past.(maybe a foot now, compared to 2-3 feet in the past)
@bigben Good to see the map is public again!
Looking forward to seeing everyone on the hill!

bigben91682 - 11-1-2011 at 05:18 AM

Porterdale #1 added

Honeyville #2 updated

ragden - 11-1-2011 at 05:33 AM

Looks like the rector road lot was pulled? Thats a bummer. Fun place to ride, though I havent been up to that site in a couple years. Oh well.

I hope the hill gets another foot or so before the weekend, but we'll see how things go. I'm still coming up. See ya soon.
:)

bigben91682 - 11-1-2011 at 06:02 AM

Yeah rector rd was pulled, there was corn there this year and Jan said the stalks were left very long, no good for riding this year...

Ah... that makes sense. Not pulled because we dont have permission, but because of condition of the field. Cool. Maybe next year then.. Thanks!
:)

chudalicious - 11-1-2011 at 07:31 AM

Getting excited. Time to watch the "How to Snowkite" video one more time before we leave on Thursday.

Thanks for the heads up and update Boba - I didn't change anything in the settings but was able to view the page today !? Ah well, not going to question :)

Helpful to have the maps as well bigben - thanks for that too as we have never been and need all the help we can get.

We're getting in late on Thursday and can't wait to meet up with everyone!

bobalooie57 - 12-1-2011 at 08:28 AM

I don't know if I mentioned it before, but registration will be so much easier if you download the registration/liability form, print it out and fill it in ahead, and bring it with you. That way, all you need to do is drop it off at the registration tent at the Deer River Ranch,(there will be traffic/event signs to let you know you are getting close)and find out where everyone is flying. Here's a link to the site that has the download. http://www.lewiscountyrecreation.com/kiteskiing.shtml

bigben91682 - 12-1-2011 at 08:37 AM

Getting pumped for this weekend! Skipping put of work tomorrow to get a warmup in our newly fresh powder....

Bob, how's the snow looking up there, you guts getting much from this storm? More importantly where are the strong winter winds we like!?

bobalooie57 - 12-1-2011 at 08:48 AM

I dunno about those winds, I guess maybe I'll have to start the blood sacrifices after all. Snow is getting better as we speak, though I'm kind of with b-roc on that one, there can be too much, but I think we'll be just fine on that.

Give me 3+ feet of fresh powder and 15mph winds and i'll be in heaven...
:wee:

Where are the winds for this weekend? Current reports are depressing...
:(

bobalooie57 - 12-1-2011 at 09:21 AM

How about 2 feet and 10 mph? I dunno if I can afford more blood than that! lol

That would be marginal riding conditions. If I had a 19m, or 21m, I'd be set...

chudalicious - 12-1-2011 at 11:40 AM

Glad to hear the snow is getting there. We are getting hit hard in RI right now with 18+ inches. Office was closed today and for some reason, I still get all giddy like a kid again when that happens. :)

Just booked a lesson with Zeb for Anderson and I on Friday - getting excited just thinking about trying to get the board moving with the kite. I hope we can figure it all out!

ragden - 13-1-2011 at 05:25 AM

Saturday winds are looking good.. Sunday not so much...
Just have to figure out the best location for south winds (not Hanno's Lot).
:)

ragden - 14-1-2011 at 07:07 AM

Forecast is looking better... only question is.. where are the winds going to be the cleanest on Saturday...
:)
Would love to ride on Oneida... but will Honeyville site be decent, or the back lot for Porterdale... Trouble is, the two sites are in opposite directions.. hard to say which will be better...

bigben91682 - 14-1-2011 at 07:21 AM

Glad to see the forecast is getting better. Luckily the sites are fairly close together that it wont be difficult to find something good for a southerly. Worst case scenario fly north shore of Oneida on Saturday and tug hill Sunday....

snowspider - 14-1-2011 at 09:54 AM

As it looks now Chaumont bay will have strong steady wind 20+ mph saturday I'm putting in at the state boat launch.
Sunday Porterdale is on the agenda.
Its going to be a busy week end.

Checked in to the hotel. Breakfast tomorrow at Timber's. Then we figure out where to ride...

bobalooie57 - 16-1-2011 at 06:43 AM

Well, those that listened to early predictions are missing out! Windy/snowy yesterday, wind was S at 15g28, and it snowed most of the night so nice fresh powder covering yesterdays tracks. Gotta sort through yesterdays pics, but no time now, gotta go!

cheezycheese - 16-1-2011 at 06:57 AM

wish i could be out there with you guys... wasn't in my stars this year... have enough fun for all of us Bob !!!

bigben91682 - 17-1-2011 at 01:19 PM

I was only up there for Saturday, and only shot a little video when I wasn't riding but here it is:

bobalooie57 - 17-1-2011 at 01:31 PM

Hey bb, thanks for coming, and thanks for that video! Wind was kinda treacherous Sat.(to my mind) but there were some good riders there. Thanks again.

bigben91682 - 17-1-2011 at 03:25 PM

Also have some pictures from Saturday in this Gallery

I heard it through the grapevine!

bobalooie57 - 17-1-2011 at 04:21 PM

Here is my video take on the festival. I used CCR's "I heard it through the grapevine" to highlight the fact that the light wind predictions sent rumors around which likely kept some from attending, too bad for them. We had a great weekend and fun was had despite the gusty conditions.

Nice pics, bigben, Thanks!

Thank you all for putting on another Tug Hill Kite Fest , land owners, Lewis co.recreation, Jan , Bob , Ben for the maps. The Porterdale site close to Rt 81 , Adams Center, and Barns Corners should go a long way in keeping Tug Hill a real snow kite destination.
I had quite an experience on Chaumont bay saturday 30mph in 6-8" snow , near blizzard conditions , two episodes of vertigo , logged15 miles. Sunday at Porterdale was a blast I hope every one enjoyed the flight of the snowspider. Really tested my kite and sled skills. Sled , kites, and body got out of there with nothing broke, thats a very good outcome test piloting in those conditions. I would like to try Porterdale when the snow is hard packed and I can stay on top, keep updating conditions.
Thanks again

Saturday was a bit rough, but fun. Sunday was the better day, in my opinion. A couple of us went out to Sandy Pond and had a freaking blast. It was awesome. Wife took a few pictures posted below:

Beautiful set of pics Michael, you're lucky to have a tag along photographer(and a good one, too!) that is willing to brave the elements. I talked to a Wat'n Times reporter at the Deer Ranch Sunday morning who, 1. Wasn't dressed for the conditions, and 2. Whined and complained about the depth of the snow, the wind, etc.(everything that makes us happy!). hehe, yeah, lucky you. Looked like fun! I'll have to join you guys next time you are at the Sandy!

Silly reporters.. Doesnt he know snow is for snowkiters? Seems pretty silly to come out to an event like this and NOT be dressed for the conditions...

Yeah... I know I'm pretty lucky to have Sunnie coming along. She got some really fantastic pictures. I was thoroughly impressed. Though, she didnt stick around for much in the afternoon session (too windy and cold for her).

I tried to call you and let you know where we were going.. but couldnt reach ya...
:)

bobalooie57 - 18-1-2011 at 08:30 AM

The reporter was a she, heavy coat, but jeans, sneakers and no hat. Sun. am started out cold and light wind. I was the only one at the Deer Ranch(everyone else had met at the Porterdale site for early ride, but no wind). Wind at Deer Ranch when I got there was W @ about 10, and I was the only one there, so I threw up my 8M, and got a little ride, until I hit the lee side of the hill, and the powder was thigh deep, and I stopped instantly!(not enough speed/float to get through it!) I was floundering around, trying to get back up without face planting when the reporter showed up. She was halfway up the hill, and hollering about getting an interview, and I made her stand there a good 10 min. while I got my stuff together.hehehe. I did bring her in to Jan's Clam shelter and turned on the heater for her, and while I was doing that, my kite, which I had attached to a shovel in the snow, pulled free in the building wind, and I had to hoof it halfway to the radio tower to retreive it! At least the photographer that showed up at Porterdale was dressed for it. She also said her brother had given her a 4M Flow, and she might be coming out with us sometime.

ragden - 18-1-2011 at 08:37 AM

Ah... now that makes more sense. The reporter I saw on Sunday was a guy.. and seemed dressed for the weather... Didnt see anyone Sunday...
:)
