18m Phantom vs. 17m Silver Arrow

BeamerBob - 9-12-2010 at 07:38 PM

I have a friendly discussion going on with a kite buddy that shall remain nameless on which kite wins on a buggy run. What winds will the Phanny have an advantage and when does the SA win?

I was scared to death with my 15 in what felt like mid teens on Ivanpah. Survival mode the whole time. You talking 18m Phanny here?

Yep! You will grow a bigger set each visit to the playa!.............aj

What about in the Kitecat? What would be best Synergy, Phantom or 19M SA2? I am dying to get this thing on the water!

SA/S2/SA2 wins the low wind battle no contest.............Lynns wont even inflate without assistance in 4 mph wind while the SA 2 requires no pre inflate..............the 12m S2 kicks in @ 6 kts in the buggy.........Lynns are sweet but FSer wins any low wind contest on any terrain...............

agreed!!! not to mention AJ has a set - ozzy / arie are on Vapors 2.7 / me on the 2.3m and AJ on the Phanny 9m

it also helps to be in company with other crazy xxtreme pilots all pushing each other to their limits (excluding Dino). hehehehe

high wind gusty the Phanny, light wind smooth wind SA. you'd still be holding down a phanny and packing up the SA.

which kite would be faster i would have to say the Phanny

for the kitecat SYN 24, i think the SA has more float so you'd spend more time out of the seat.

I'm gonna be devils advocate here. I had a 18 phantom and as soon as the venom came out I could wait to sell it. There is a reason they don't sell the phantom anymore, all the later kite designs are better. If all you do is buggy on a dry lake bed it might be nice. It turns like a dog, has poor low end, and relaunched like crap if you did anything aggressive with it. Very stable though because its slow. Get one of the old f-arcs rip is peddling. It has more power and super high aspect and a very small wind window. You can point straight upwind with it. It may kill you though. If I had to choose between a phantom and any other Pl kite, I'd choose the other one. Outcast me, but ive owned nearly every PL design and the phantom is one of my least favorites.

LOL. Yes it is sad when a man does not even know his own kite. I have had one day so far to use it. It has either been 0 wind or storm weather. I had a couple good buggy sessions with the 9M Phantom riding on the storm.

 but ... it's the best looking PL kite to date :D

Let me start off by mentioning I own, have access to, and fly VERY fast kites. The appeal of the forum towards the Phantom is it's such a great buggy motor. Drives forward in the window, less lateral pull, predicatable/stable, and slower in the turns means you stay with your buggy. In its mid and upper wind ranges my 12m Phantom turns very nice but nothing like a 12m Synergy which again is a good thing in the buggy, not so much for water. Ive never seen an 18m in the air but the 15 is fairly nimble. ACampbell was throwing his around easy enough and working his 100 lb Ivanpah upwind in 9/10 mph last month. Had I not just bought a 12.5m Montana 3 (cherry kite Abstract) I would have sent Rip the $$$ already

back on thread the SA goes low the Phnatom goes hi.........I recommend one each................:smilegrin:
