Info on Snowkite Soldier

flexiblade - 13-12-2010 at 10:35 PM

Looking for some detailed information from those that have been in years past.

What type of winds come through the area there - gusty, lumpy or smooth and ocean like?

Terrain - hilly, flat, rocky? February a good month for winds there?

I've been to the website - looks nice and all but I really need the lowdown from someone that can describe it warts and all if you know what I mean.

Thanks

I ll be there, driving through actually in a few days I will hit up my buddy who has kited there and see what he has to say as far as the beta on all of it. I second a PKF get together.... flash loves to have playmates.

If it's the same place (and I'm sure it is) Canuck and I met there on the way down to NABX last year and it was amazing! I'd never kited a hill before and had quite the learning curve but man it was a beautiful spot. It did seem pretty near endless. Go. You will not regret it - especially when there's a bunch of party kinda goings on happening. There will likely be a few from the Edmonton area down there - look for the Flysurfer crew.

Flexi: In case you haven't seen it, here is a link to a recent video - Camas Pairie, Idaho. This is near Kite Soldier.

From this web site:

Also has good video showing the kite soldier site.

Local guy and his son drove down there and got a session in. He shot a video of his son flying. It at least shows the conditions that were there on Saturday.

Same guy made another 6 hour trip to ride again. He shot some more video and this is an unedited piece. Amazing area I would say. I really want to go.

I'm a little late on the uptake, but I'm fortunate enough for the Camas to be my kite spot. A week ago the snow was pretty hard and there had been a couple warm days that took a fair amount of snow to the point that there was some exposed dirt on the ridges of the hills as well as some sabebrush and rock. Within the last couple days however we've had a cold front move in and the recent report was of 2 to 3 inches of new snow. The forecast is for cold all week with chances of snow toward the end of the week.

Last year my brother and I pitched tents and stayed over friday night into saturday. I'm planning on doing the same thing this year. There was quite the turnout last year and they have added the event as part of the North American Snowkite Tour. That means a race, freestyle and poker run. The terrain out there is definitely expansive. They also have a decent amount of after dark events in the town of Fairfield, so if that's your scene it's there for you. There are always people that stay at the kiting spots if going low rent is your thing. Be warned though it's supposed to get down to near 8 below. I know, for you Canadians that's a heat wave.

As for f0rgiv3n, he's moved on from kiting and sold his gear a month or two ago. Sucks too, because it's been a great year here. If any of you want any information on the area and are planning to attend shoot me a u2u and I can give you my phone number or whatever. If I don't hear from you though... look for the tent with the Peter Lynn windsock on the end of a pole.

I am down for a PKF get together. I'm 50/50 on attending this years event.

I just noticed I never posted the dates of the event on here. Hopefully ya'll looked at the website to get the solid info. For those of you that haven't the event is this weekend, the 25th-27th. I'm still planning on camping and the wind forecast looks to be improving for saturday. Friday is pretty much a definite for wind. There's cell service up there, so shoot me a u2u and we'll set something up. See you all on the flip side, hopefully exhausted from a killer weekend.

Ooops...thought it was next month.

stetson05 - 25-2-2011 at 12:23 PM

I knew when it was but couldn't afford the trip this year. Every year I say next year so.... Next year I will go.
