Help me choose a depower!?

lives2fly - 21-12-2010 at 05:11 AM

Its a long time since I bought a new kite. More than a year!

ok i have been buying snowboards and surf kayaks and other fun stuff but i guess you all understand the power kites have to make you want more and more of them!;-)

Anyhow I would like a depower foil. I have flown a 13m Frenzy which was a bit much for me and a 7m Sabre which was not quite enough! so i'm expecting somewhere between 8 and 11m will suit?

Since HQ control gear looks crappy and Flexifoil stopped making the Sabre I guess it will be an Ozone.

So I am 155lb's and I want a "goto" kite for landboarding on sand and occaisionally grass when its blowing between 10 and 20mph.

I like carving turns over slides so it needs to hold power accross the window. i do some small jumps (just learning the aerial stuff on land really) so lift is not big on the tick list - as long as i can stay airborne long enough for a grab or a transition.

Looking at Access 8m or 10m & frenzy 9m or 11m. Can you guys share any wisdom to help me narrow that down?

Go for the Frenzy. In those wind speeds... I'd say probably the 9m.

HQ bar: http://www.atbshop.co.uk/images/hq/hq_montana_v_bar_t.jpg
Ozone bar: http://www.flyozone.com/gallery/a/snowkites/products/kites/a...

They look the same to me. Why is the HQ one crappy?

Just to throw a monkey wrench out there...
You could also consider the Flysurfer Psycho4 12m, Speed3 12m, or Outlaw 10m or 12m.
There are also the PL Arcs to consider, though I dont know what sizes would be best in that wind range.

Don't get me wrong, Ozone is a great product, but it's not the only one out there that will work. Having said that, if you are deadset on Ozone, then the 9m is probably a good choice...

Though I agree the Ozone bar set up is more refined and in general the overall construction is also more polished there's nothing wrong with HQ's quality. I've seen those kites handle all kinds of nastiness and come out just fine and I've never seen anyone have an issue with the bar set up.

Too bad about not being able to score a Sabre. Damn those things are great kites. I really miss mine.

If lives2fly has the extra coin I guess Ozone is a good option. There seems to be a lot of overlap in the Frenzy/Access line up.
